These insites to the novel proccess are very interesting . Thank you ADB.

Id think that a line of books about how every Chapter and primarch reacted to the HH wouldnt be viewed as filler. Yah some will be acclaimed more then others but all the primarchs should have there stories and insites. The most amazing thing about the HH series has been how the rebellion developed through the primarchs. I loved Fulgrim. not because of the writing style or the linear storyline but because of how Fulgrim just fell into depravity and excess. The insite into Fulgrim was what did it. It was an amazing book but hard to read. I know that sounds contradictory .Or reading how the Emperor's favorite son Horus turned and how subtle it was . The stories beg to be told. So far the only thing I disliked was the Diffrence in the DA story line from older books to the HH series but again im jaded because I have a friend who loves the DAs and so im interested in the storyline a little more .

Anyways... Cant wait to see what the next year hold for HH fluff.

I'd like to echo the sentiment above. I really brings the game/story to life to get in the minds/lives of the primarchs and their legions before and during the Heresy.

I thoroughly enjoyed A Thousand Sons and though McNell did a terrific job with it. In contrast to some of my Wolf brethren, I actually liked his treatment of Russ and found it accurate, as we see the Wolves from the eyes of another Legion (and their soon to be enemy). Some said he was made to appear as a brute who relished destruction and nothing else, but I think McNeill alluded to many fo his positive traits which will undoubtedly be flushed out in Prospero Burns. Plus, I think people forget that the 1K Sons wouldn't have had insight into the inner workings of the Wolves (well Ulthizzar may have, but I liked how he kept silent on it the whole novel. He was definitely one of the characters I truly enjoyed) and thus wouldn't have known about Russ the beer-drinking, competition-loving, brotherly King. They only knew him and his reputation as the savage wolf of the Emperor.

With that said, I mentioned this on another thread, but I think McNeill could have done Magnus a little better. I think his arrogance and conceited attitude were over the top, and thus his fall wasn't nearly as tragic. Had his attitudes and beliefs been more nuanced and subtle, and had his sincerity and genuine concern for helping the Emperor been flesh out more, I think his fall would have been much, much more tragic. As it is, for majority of the novel I couldn't wait for him to fall as his attitude just pissed me off. I will say though that he did redeem the character in the end when Magnus stoically accepted his fate and decided to allow himself to be punished. Thoug much kudos to him for hiding all the number nine references throughout. I didn't catch on until about three quarters of the way through (when at Ullanor he notices Mortarion and all the variables of seven with his actions). I also did enjoy how he sort of made Magnus an Odinic type figure (sacrificng his eye for knowledge, the discovery of the shattered statue and colored rocks and how the different combos gave him knowledge...good stuff)

Ar, apologies for going off on a tangent.

As to what events/themes/ideas I'd like to see fleshed out:

Garro and what became of him andhis merry band (I undertsand there's already a book in the works for this)

As mentioned, the history of the first dreadnought(s)

More on the Alpha Legion (especially like to see if they can flesh out the whole loyal/traitor issue)

Raven Guard (anything really)

Russ and the SWs (both the history of Fenris and the whole 'no wolves on Fenris' bit developed, as well as more on his final departure. Plus, one word: BJORN)

White Scars - anything really. I think Khan has a lot of potential but there's very little on him.

That's all I can think of now.

I am not sure how much they will delve into the aftermath of the Heresy. That would be kind of anticlimactic.

I'm not so sure. The Horus Heresy doesn't end for the Imperium at the Siege. The Imperium knows constant war for the next few decades as it hounds the traitors and drives them back. For a comparison, the Siege of Terra is Stalingrad. We still have a lot left to go.

And there are still good stories to be told, too. The Weregeld thing with the Wolves and Raven Guard, the Iron Cage incident, Dorn's refusal to accept the Codex and the "oopsie" warship shot. . . I for one hope that there's a novel (perhaps the very last one in the series?) that shows Abaddon destroying Horus' body and re-inventing the Sons of Horus as the Black Legion. I'm not a fan of big old Abby, but that seems to be a very defining moment in the history of the Traitor Legions as a whole.

ADB has expressed interest in writing this, which would be awesome beyond all reason. Personally I am looking forward to this more than any other BL novelization including the siege of the palace, more Alpha Legion stuff, and the rest of the Soul Hunter series, but it's still years off if it will happen at all =/

And bear in mind that you, him, her, and everyone else may end up thinking this applies to The First Heretic in a few months, so I'm fairly nervous about this, myself.

As you mentioned it, a big chunk of The First Heretic did indeed go to a high-up at www.thegreatcrusade.co.uk. (Laurie, of Shroud Film fame), as well as Dan Abnett, Dan's wife Nik (who has always edited him, and gave me the best advice I received during the whole writing process), as well as my editor Nick Kyme (himself a 40K author and long-time fan), and 2 other novelists. This process is not unique to me, really. Every novel, ever, goes through it to some degree.

For the sake of argument, let's say you think The First Heretic sucks when it's released, and you decide I've wasted 10 months of my life writing it.

Firstly, that's mean of you, but I forgive you. This time.

Secondly, how did it happen?

Novels (including BL novels), as with any media, will still be released if they're "good enough". That doesn't mean that behind the scenes, everyone is hugging the author and giving him high-fives. It's also a sure-fire way to earn me being mean to said author when we cross paths, because I am categorically not a pleasant human being to be around.

Are you trying to tell us that 1st Heretic is like limp lettuce and the pdf was the good bit?

At least you're letting us down now. Quite kind of you, I suppose :P

I think that is clever to use Shroudfilm, another's perspective can catch things that the writer/writing team assumes is known/is trying to get across, but without them being clear enough to the audience. Women are good too, they do think differently, so might as well use the strength of that. :)

Let's get rid of "good enough" thinking ^_^ . Let's be like Germans with Panthers ~ A+ though few in number.

I think that is my ideal for 30K. This stuff is foundational to everything else.

Save the "good enough" for 40K ~ we can ignore it as a glitch.

We "can't" poohpooh HH stuff, if you know what I mean?

Anyway, you are not Lord of BL.... yet.... so I wont hold you accountable, for everything.

Legatus: That's the spirit! So are you starting to take BL as canon bro? *gasp, clutches at chest* :P

Rain: plant today, harvest tommorow ;)

Never!!

I am just curious about the different portrayals of the Primarchs or the Legions, in particular about Guilliman and the Ultramarines. But since the Horus Heresy material is constantly referenced on this board in background discussions, it helps to know it a little bit too.

Be careful of what you are doing Legatus :( , Magnus thought himself immune to the Great Ocean when he went delving into it.... :)

muahhahahahaha! :P

Events of the Heresy that would be interesting to read about.

World Eaters and Angron right after the short story in Tales of Heresy.

IW in their normal operations and to the purging of their home planet.

the third book in the Dark Angels section.

Blood Angels vs Daemons (Can't wait for that)

Death Guard going from clean to Nurgle awesome.

(my duh moment) Nostramo destroyed, the assault on Dorn, Night Lords in general during the Heresy.

Word Bearers and the section sent to Istvaan and what it did afterwards.

Word Bearers and Calth.

Alpha Legion Operations.

Ultramarines in the Eastern Fringe

Raven Guard, Iron Hands, and Salamanders rebuild.

ANYTHING WHITE SCARS. Especially if it involves Dark Eldar.

The assault through the webway by Chaos.

and I know there is alot of others I can think of but its late.
