Legionator
There are two possible meanings of "Jaghatai": 1) Jaghat (brave in Old Turkish) + ay (man in O.T.) = Jaghatai (brave man) 2) Jagha(n) (white, noble, pure in Mongolian) + tay (man in Mongolian) : Jaghatai (noble man) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/208143-the-primarchs-real-names/page/3/#findComment-2558851 Share on other sites
spu00sed
I always called him Rob-oot G-weel-ay-man Wait. Isn't that the universal greeting from the original Transformers movie? khalifah
Question, Names were given by the people of the planets the primarchs grew up on right? Hence why some have one name (Vulken), and others 2, (Leman Russ). Ranwulf
Question, Names were given by the people of the planets the primarchs grew up on right? Hence why some have one name (Vulken), and others 2, (Leman Russ). The same reason in real life some people from certain countries have 4 and 5 names, while others have only two. Culture and tradition. If I would bet, Vulkan's surname(if he actually had one), probably would be based on his village, or some great feat he have done. Imperialis_Dominatus
Konrad Curze is a special case. I don't think we've been told exactly who gave him the name Konrad Curze: if some Nostromans knew him and gave him that name, if the Emperor gave it to him, or if he came up with it himself somehow. It's curious to consider which might have come first: was he originally Konrad Curze, and the Night Haunter a persona he put on to punish those who needed punishing? Or was he Night Haunter first, and was Konrad Curze a mask he put over the beast so he might gain some level of acceptance from his brothers? Other Primarchs were named by whoever received and raised them dirtside, though we're not sure about Alpharius (as always). Curze does not seem to have had the luxury, or if he did, perhaps something happened to those who raised him, forcing him to don the mask and fight as a caped crusader against crime with his trusty sidekick Robi- er, nevermind, he probably would have gutted any prospective Robin (breaking curfew) along with the other criminals. The Emperor didn't see the Heresy coming because all four Chaos gods put their full concentration into keeping him from seeing it. It's why he refuses to even listen to Magnus when he tries to warn him. That, or He wanted it to happen, for whatever reason (perhaps a unified, non-heresy humankind would eventually have "gone Eldar" and spawned a fifth Chaos god). Or perhaps he did so to become that *latest* Chaos God. Does that mean the Dark Angels are actually founded from the genes of a 19th century poet? GW has referenced a lot of history and pop culture in the past, and references to their own company material is not exempt. Legatus, I'd say that's a ridiculous comparison. First off, Lion El'Jonson is clearly a historical reference, but is altered enough to the point where you can tell its supposed to allude to the themes of Lionel Johnson's famous poem about his dark secret (the themes of a dark secret being very prominent in the Dark Angels). Lionel Johnson wrote his poem over a century ago and it was about his homosexuality (or so it is generally agreed upon by those who analyze such things, Emperor bless their little hearts); he could not possibly have originally written it for Games Workshop. Malal was originally written as a part of Games Workshop's universe. Due to trouble with the author, however, they literally can't use the name without legal trouble. How loudly do you need them to shout "okay, this Malice thing we're talking about is actually this old thing we can't use anymore due to litigation avoidance protocol" before you're willing to accept that it might be so? I'm not even asking for a convert, I just want an 'okay, it isn't categorically not Malal like I've been saying.' The fact that Malal started as a concept in Games Workshop's universe, and the whole concept of Chaos in general, makes it far more reasonable to suggest that Malice is Malal than to suggest that Lion El'Jonson is actually a poet from Old Terra, or (to bring up your further comparisons) that Sly Marbo is actually a fictional character played by a famous Old Terran actor. Using the two (or three) in parallel is absurd. Using the Horned Rat as a comparison is similarly absurd, as unless we get some new Hrud background confirming fan theories there are no Skaven in 40k. There are, however, factions in 40k who worship an entity who bears near-perfect resemblance to Malal in all respects but that of the forbidden name. shatter
I thought ll was y en francais. To pronounce his name as if it were french, I'd be all "Ro'boot Gi-ye-ma". As there's no vowel at the end of his surname I'd not enunciate the n complete, unlike the given name's t(e). Mind you, I totally failed French over quarter of a century ago. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/208143-the-primarchs-real-names/page/3/#findComment-2564279 Share on other sites
cosmo438
Konrad Curze is a special case. I don't think we've been told exactly who gave him the name Konrad Curze My memory is a little hazzy, but didn't he become known to the people as a ruler or leader before the Emperor arrived? He raised himself and became a vigilanty. But he was eventually recognised by the planets leaders as a hero and given a place of power... As I recall anyway. So maybe his name was given once he became a proper member of the planets society, instead of the Night Haunter legend he used to be. My info may out on this one, I don't know too much about Night Haunter. Also, Ro-Boot-Teh?! I always thought it was Row-'Bout Gullie(y)-Man. Never even considered Leman Russ as Lemmon Russ :) Furrus Manus = Iron Man(us)? *cough cough* Plagiarism *cough* ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/208143-the-primarchs-real-names/page/3/#findComment-2573613 Share on other sites
Lazarine
I always assumed that Ferrus Manus was given his current name after he killed the Wyrm and received iron hands, and that the legion was further named after this. Maybe his culture gave its members a new name upon reaching manhood, or his hands were deemed so important that everyone called him iron hands and ceased to call him by his old name. I often wonder if something similar happened to Sanguinius. This assumes that the Iron Hands had a different name before being reunited with their primarch (in a similar manner to the Death Guard, Word Bearers and World Eaters), which may or may not be revealed in the Horus Heresy novels at some point. As to Konrad Kurze/Night Haunter, maybe Konrad Kurze had been his name at some point and he had stopped using it when he met the Emperor (being so caught up in the character of Night Haunter and his personal vendettas). mcbeaty
the emperor probably had a name for each of them but when you grow up with a diffrent name why change it probably wasent deemed important enough to go in to but the night haunter bit gives a hint of his avenger in the dark character.
