Brother Captain Posted August 10, 2010 Share Posted August 10, 2010 I guess it was time I tried NMM. Luckily I found a technique for painting NMM using mostly washes so it seems less intimidating. The Normish Posted August 10, 2010 Share Posted August 10, 2010 I like the dull gold, actually. It changes from the super shiny gold we see all the time from the 'Eavy Metal team and such. But if you're going to make it shiny, that's good too. I'm not exactly modest with my application of gold on my own models either. I just did a test model with both "metalic metal" and non-metalic - which comes out for me as a much duller gold, and I much prefered it. My personal style is a more blend/dull/darker/brooding, however you want to say anyway, so this really is up my alley. Brother Captain Posted August 11, 2010 Author Share Posted August 11, 2010 It's nice to see there's some interest in my NMM attempt. :D @ Master Chaplain Astador: My plan is to highlight the mini up to pure wite and then maybe paint some devlan mud in the recesses if I feel it needs more contrast. :D @ Dezartfox: I think I should just print a pic of your Sanguinor and use it as a reference for highlight placement (if it's ok with you). I was reading your WIP thread again and found the WIP pics very helpfull. Oh and next time you want to sell an army let me know. Brother Captain Posted August 12, 2010 Author Share Posted August 12, 2010 Actually the glow of the jump pack is pretty easy: - Basecoat with Astronomican Grey - Wash with Asurmen Blue - Highlight with Astronomican Grey (I think that Fortress Grey would work as well if not better due to less pigmentation) - Highlight with Skull White - Glaze with a mix of 1:2 Asurmen Blue:H2O - Highlight with Skull White It may sound like a lot of stages but since you can be quite relaxed as far as highlight placement and "crispness" is concerned it can be done pretty quickly. It's good to have a hair dryer nearby to help the washes dry or, if you have lots of jump packs to paint, you can batch-paint the glow to save time. Brother Captain Posted August 14, 2010 Author Share Posted August 14, 2010 Another update. I didn't manage to do a lot of work on the mini today. I did however finish the red shoulderpads and I must say I'm quite please with how they turned out and how they tie with the rest of the mini. I also shaded the feathery bits. I think they turned out ok and it will give a nice white with blueish shadows when highlighted with greys and white. I went for blue shading so it contrasts with the warm colours of the mini. In generaly I'm happy with the progress so far. At this stage the wings and feathery stuff are almost finished though I'd have to add the final pure white highlight and do a bit of touch up. However, I think you should make the swords blade red or some other color already on the mini, or you will have too many different colors on the mini, and it will look better if the palette is slightly more limited. I'll paint it afte the rest of the mini is finished so I can have an idea of how it will tie with the rest of the colours.
