Space Wolves + Grey Knights

I'm mildly interested in including a 5-10 man Grey Knight squad in my Space Wolves army, but I'd prefer to keep things as fluffy as possible, and I know we are at best distrustful of the Inquisition. I was thinking about making up some fluff about... eh, I dunno, Rune Priests wearing Power Armour and working together in a small pack, and using Grey Knight rules for them. It would allow me to have a bit of fun running a small squad of GK alongside my wolves, and it has a ton of interesting modelling potential.

So, first question: I've been hearing murmurs about the new Grey Knight codex not having allies rules, and I'd hate to do this and then never be able to use it. Anyone know about this?

Second question: would I be excommunicated from the Fang for fraternizing with the Inquisition? :P

There is nothing unfluffy about allying GK to SW.

Some of the Armageddon fluff states that Logan Grimnar actually requested the aid of the Grey Knights to fight the daemons.

Edit: answer to Q1 - printed codex is still legal, allies are still usable.

In the second Ragnar novel(Ragnar's Pack I believe, not positive, it's been awhile) Logan Grimnar allows an inquisitor access to an item that is considered to be a sacred trophyof one of the wolves greatest battles, and then allows him to take it halfway across the galaxy! He also sends Ragnar, Ragnar's pack, and the senior drill instructor of the fang(thin k wolf guard battle leader) to assist him.

I think we get along ok with the inquisition, and considering our proximity to the Eye, we most likely get along best with Ordo Malleus. Tho I bet the Ordo Hereticus disapproves of us a bit(fangs... The wulfen).

Just my two cents.

Space Wolves get along great with the Grey Knights, but not Inquisitors...

After all the Grey Knights are everything that EVERY space marine should be in the defence of mankind and they don't do the whole "world saw a single daemon, virus bomb it" thing inquisitors do, they are a bit better at leaving the world at large alone... namely because they port in, kill the daemons, mind scrub the people who saw it and port out.

Aye, Grey Knights are at a even higher standard then the Ultra Marines in terms of reputation and respect, even the Black Templars think their awesome. That requires quite some repututation!

But yeah, Space Wolves reguard them with a warriors respect. There is no doubting that the Grey Knight is everything a Space Marine should be. Strong, skilled, selfless warriors of humanity imbedded with complete mastery over the power of the warp and themselves.

Oh, okay, that makes it a bit easier. Suppose, though, that I still want to kit-bash Grey Knights with Space Wolves and call them Rune Priests who suit up in PA and run around in über-elite packs while using Grey Knight rules for them: will I run into problems at tournaments? Or will people be okay with it as long as I explain, "yeah, these guys are using Grey Knights rules and everything else is WYSIWYG"?

Don't see any problem at all with Grey/Knights. XD

Now, mah friend, I think it's the Administratum that posess the hate from the Wolves from what happened in Armaggeddon.

And I've seen the SW with the Inquistion, from one visting the Fang to write "the saga of giants', from recruiting Ragnar and pals to help in a Chaos quest.

Besides, there is NOTHING as awesome as Paladins and Vikings fighting alongside against a tide of enemies.

Actually there is.

The Viking Paladin fighting solo against a tide of enemies.

First off, it's a relatively recent thing that the SW have problems with the Grey Knights. It was due to the First Armegeddon War, where the SW defended Armegeddon against a Chaos invasion with the help of the PDF, and then the Grey Knights exterminated the entire planetary population because the were deemed corrupted.

Secondly, if you're going to make a squad of counts-as Grey Knights, why make them rune priests? Just model them as ordinary SW (or Wolf Guard?) with storm bolters and really big CCWs, and say that's where the extra S comes from. Ordinary PAGK don't get any powers, if I recall correctly.

No, all Grey Knights get a boatload of crazy psychic abilities (Aegis, The Shrouding, True Grit, Rites of Exorcism, &c.). I figured that Rune Priests best represented that.

And besides, who wouldn't want a squad of five RP in Power Armour? ^_^

Tsavong,

Most of us with Grey Knights armies, and are following all of the recent rumors for a release of a Grey Knights codex soon (Jan-Mar 2011), are willing to bet the farm that the allies rules will be gone. Based on that, I might not put the effort into building your force, unless you are cool with just being able to do it legally/officially for a few more months. If it is for friendly games only, and your mates don't care, then go for it, but otherwise I would hate for you to waste your time/effort/money on something with only a very short play-cycle.

You could still use them in Apocalypse, however, as everything goes in that rules-set.

I was just thinking about what you're trying to do here. I agree with your second post and what Wildfire says.

Rather then a super unit of WG or GH I could see this unit being formed from junior skalds. The Shrouding, increased strength weapons and even their Storm Bolters could be considered their "power"
