bushman101
I'm painting up a unit of VV, currently without JPs. But the more I think about it, it seems like using JPs is the optimal choice (especially to make use of Heroic Intervention). What do people on the boards here think? Are JPs a must with VV or not? Thanks in advance
Deus_Sanguinius
From my point of view HI is THE reason why I would play VV. So I definitely recommend JPs for them. Regards Sang
Drudge Dreadnought
If you aren't using heroic intervention, you are going to be better off with honor guard, assault marines, or death company.
Chimaera2000
I agree that Death Company are generally the better choice if you're not giving the Vanguard Veterans jump packs. There's are niche situations where Vanguard would be useful without jump packs, such as a Land-raider heavy list at very high points-level where the Force Organization chart is becoming a limitation. In 2000 points or less, though, Veterans with jump packs is usually the sensible option. So to answer your question, it's not strictly necessary to give them jump packs, just sensible. TrentL
Do like I did with my death company. Install magnets so you can switch backpacks get the best of both worlds!
bloodancient
I decided to go either way with them there are 10 with JP's and 10 on foot that come out of a crusader with a priest and smetimes a chappy they just might be my favorite squad. They always make it where i want them and totally defeat the enemy twenty zerks and only got the charge on the first 10.
BLACK BLΠFLY
Definitely Vanguard should be kitted with jump packs so you can use HI. It's what makes them an asset. As others have mentioned there are other squads you can take without jump packs for the points. 0b :P
Firedrake28
There's nothing Vanguard can do that Honor Guard can't do better until the Vanguard are given jump packs imo. Honor Guard come with a Priest and have access to proper special weapons (meaning they don't need to rely on the pistol-sized versions of various guns). If you're running Vanguard, be sure to use Heroic Intervention to its maximum by taking jump packs and using Descent of Angels.

The only reason I disagree with this is the Vanguard's ability to have larger squads. I used to run a pretty effective 8 man Vanguard with a reclusiarch and a priest just as if they were an old VAS. Real nasty unit (but oh so many points).

Some games I want to HI, some I don't and the squad becomes a large Vet squad. All depends on the game.
bushman101
okay, gonna pry off the back-packs and add JPs. Thanks everyone. My intent was to have a unit that was interchangeable with HonorGuard. Both had gold helmets and skulls on the left shoulder pad, so it seemed easy. But HI seems to good to pass up

They can be Jump pack Honor guard or VV, or they can be foot slogging HG or VV.... the sky is the limit!
