Ranwulf
Hey fellas, after winning my first and second SW games ever(and winning them in mah Birthday), I feel quite interested in continuing the Wolf path. Now, I want to ask some basic questions about our furry friends(huh, I hope people don't misunderstand this). 1-How many Grey Hunters people usually use? I use 3 in my 1500 List, and they quite worked. 2-How many Rune Priests usually they use at 1500 points and 2000? 3-I really don't understand how I field Wolf Guard with Wolf Scouts, I have to use Wolf Guard Battle Leader(with Mark of Hunter), or can I simply use a regular Wolf Guard. 4-I use 5 Wolf guard Terminators, with 4 SS and 2 TH 2 PW and a Chain Fist. do you guys think this is, I don't know, wrong? 5-Land Raiders, do people use them at 1500 points? I must say, I really, REALLY, liked Long Fangs. Nothing better then ol' duds killing enemies with... HEAVY WEAPONS! Fred Johnson the 3rd jr
Huntas? Did your cover slip off right at the start? Are you really an ork spy pretending to be a Space Wolf? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/208460-how-many-grey-huntas/#findComment-2487498 Share on other sites
Grey Mage
I tend to take one unit per 500pts. At 1k I tend to take 2, maybe 3- I had a 3k game a couple weeks ago and had 60. I take 1 RP up to 1500, and might take a second at like 2250- frankly theyre an excellent unit but I dont want to spam them. You can use a regular wolf gaurd chosen from a squad and attached to the scouts, no problem. *Shrugs* I have a hard time taking WG in TDA with the new codex, but theres nothing wrong with how your doing it. 1250 is the earliest Ill take a landraider, one is perfectly reasonable at 1500pts provided your troops dont suffer for it. I usually end up throwing the good ol 15 bloodclaws with a wolf priest in it too, just because its alot of fun. And yes- LFs kick alot of tail. Evilbob
I take 3 packs of grey hunters in almost every build, but some blood claws. Wanna always make sure I can take objectives! Against most opponents, I have 2 Wolf Priests. Often each one will get attached to 1 of the aforementioned grey hunters with a PG and drive out shooting lighting out the hatch. You can put a regular old wolf guard in with scouts AOk. Melta bombs, power fist, combi melta, its all good stuff. TDA load out seems good, but I dont know what you fight against. Myself, I never seem to take em as Guard has way too much plasma for my taste lol Depends on the Raider, what its goal is, and what it's carrying. At 1500 I often take the blood claws/wolf priest/LRC that a lot of people swear by. Valerian
Hey fellas, after winning my first and second SW games ever(and winning them in mah Birthday), I feel quite interested in continuing the Wolf path. Now, I want to ask some basic questions about our furry friends(huh, I hope people don't misunderstand this). First thing you got to do is change your Avatar : ) 1-How many Grey Hunters people usually use? I use 3 in my 1500 List, and they quite worked. I like 3 full packs at 1,500. If I'm playing over 2,000 points then I would add a 4th pack. 2-How many Rune Priests usually they use at 1500 points and 2000? I just use 1 Rune Priest regardless of game size. My second HQ choice is Rangar, then I can add a Wolf Priest, too, in games over 2K. 3-I really don't understand how I field Wolf Guard with Wolf Scouts, I have to use Wolf Guard Battle Leader(with Mark of Hunter), or can I simply use a regular Wolf Guard. You can do both, if you want. A regular Wolf Guard can be assigned to lead the Wolf Scouts, in accordance with the inset box in the Wolf Guard entry in the army list. He becomes a part of the unit, just like any other Wolf Guard Leader. Either instead of him, or in addition to him, you can also attach a Wolf Guard Battle Leader or a Wolf Priest with the Saga of the Hunter. I encourage you to experiment around with this in a few games and see if you like it. 4-I use 5 Wolf guard Terminators, with 4 SS and 2 TH 2 PW and a Chain Fist. do you guys think this is, I don't know, wrong? It isn't "wrong", but it is pretty expensive. What are you intending to do with your Wolf Guard Terminators? Do you really need a Chain Fist and two Thunder Hammers in the same unit to do it? Do you need 4 Storm Shields to keep them alive? My 4x Marine Wolf Guard Terminator pack looks like this: Combi-Plasma and Power Sword - cheap guy that gets off some good Plasma rounds, before becoming the "ablative wound" for the unit. Combi-Plasma and Wolf Claw - still relatively cheap, but effective for the Plasma shooting, and later in close combat. Storm Shield and Wolf Claw - still cheap, has the 3+ Save to get assigned wounding hits that ignore regular armour saves. If he makes the save, he preserves more expensive members of the pack; if he dies, so be it. Heavy Flamer and Chain Fist - great for softening up a unit before the charge - can open up vehicles with no trouble, and still isn't all that expensive. Ragnar can attach to this unit and deploy with them in a standard Land Raider for a unit that is pretty good in shooting (at least initially with the 4x Plasma shots), and is great in close combat. 5-Land Raiders, do people use them at 1500 points? Of course! I've only bothered with building 1 Land Raider, but I use it for my Ragnar + Pack at every points level game, from 1,500 points up to 2,500 points and beyond. I must say, I really, REALLY, liked Long Fangs. Nothing better then ol' duds killing enemies with... HEAVY WEAPONS! Yep, Long Fangs really kick ass; they are one of the favorite units of all Space Wolves players in this edition. I never used them once with the old 3rd Edition codex, but now I regularly use 2 full Packs, and have everything I need to build a 3rd if I want to. Grey Mage
Pssh. I take it neither of you pups are old enough to remember Mekkboy Bigdakka, who used to Moderate in the Fang, and was the finest breakfast cook the bar and grill had ever seen? Put down your bolters, and post something useful. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/208460-how-many-grey-huntas/#findComment-2488020 Share on other sites
Karack Blackstone
Grey Mage can be relied upon to post the most potent of things for aiding a new player. And as far as the rest of one's army goes, that's mostly choice, as whatever else sucks up points has to work together with the rest. But, it's not always hard. 1 per 500 - Very good advice LF's - Never go wrong, just miss sometimes The LRC with 14/15 BC's, a WG w/ Fist if you can squeeze him in, and a WP, are a good linebreaker squad setup. WG are your personal bodyguard, set them up to do their job and they should rock house. Rune Priests are a matter of choice. If they're in your standard army, have fun and learn how to use them. Search on, "Rune Priest Tips" or something similar should help you. Zynk Kaladin
As a seasoned veteran of the receiving end of the Long Fang's wrath I must say they are most certainly awesome. As for the amount of grey hunters, 1 squad for every 500 points ala Grey Mage is a great rule of thumb, but you seem to already have that anyway. I'm a big fan of the Wolves even though I don't have a wolf army. However my friend does and getting victory over them has always proven... difficult to insure. We always seem to tie ;) Enjoy! Hfran Morkai
Pssh. I take it neither of you pups are old enough to remember Mekkboy Bigdakka, who used to Moderate in the Fang, and was the finest breakfast cook the bar and grill had ever seen? He still sometimes walks the halls of the Fang...sometimes you can smell the roasting elk. With regards to your Terminators, that's a very expensive pack for what it does. I would personally take two Storm Shield and Thunder Hammer guys, two dudes with power Weapon and Combi of choice and the Chainfist. Rune_Priest_Rhapsody
In my opinion Grey Hunters are an excellent troop choice. I run two ten man packs at 1500, and three at 2000. I also have a five man squad of Wolf Guard in TDA similarly equipped as yours are, and I love them!! I also use Grimnar when running them, which seems to be the obvious thing to do, but damn is the guy good!! No wonder he's the king!! I have yet to experiment with a LR, but I would run one in a higher point game myself, say 2500+. While a great vehicle, it is expensive and for toting around troops I really like the Rhino/Drop pod more. -R_P_R Edit: Please, for the love of Russ, don't call them "Huntas"!!
