Doghouse
Cheers guys! :) Â I've started work on an admech magi test model to go with these guys as an option for me and Ed so will try and get some shots up later if possible. Â Shepard: No problem mate if you need any tips let me know and I'll see what I can do to help. Doghouse
Thanks mate. :D  I was going to go with the original plain bands but the new FW approach makes a lot of sense in terms of movement.  Here's the first of the armatures that I'm reworking to give a sense of movement. I am going with the fixed helms so it's going to be a bit challenging to get realistic poses but a lot more fun.  http://i38.tinypic.com/2nsozd4.jpg  As you can see they are a little bigger than my regular marine conversions but they should look all the better for it.  http://i36.tinypic.com/2wqygzb.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/208488-pre-heresy-madness/page/2/#findComment-2489072 Share on other sites

Doghouse
Thanks mate! :) Â Funnily enough it's a complete lack of finances that's driving this army as I can't afford any new models so have to make my own now. Most of the armatures for example are made from old minis that I've melted down. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/208488-pre-heresy-madness/page/2/#findComment-2489138 Share on other sites
verpine
Hey Doghouse, Â Your work is coming along great but if you don't mind, could you post a picture of the model of armor you are modelling? At first, i didn't even think it was a space marine, but then remembered it was pre-heresy. Anyways, i dont really know what sort of armor it is you're making, so if there is a sketch or something of that mark of armor that you can post it would be really helpful. thanks! ephrael
Doghouse, your work is amazing as always. I love that you made your own armature to sculpt the armor over. It seems like the only obvious way to get the correct proportions on your marines. I was wondering if you sculpted one "band" around one leg and then let it dry before sculpting the next one so that you don't accidentally squash the finished band? Doghouse
Cheers guys. ^_^  Verpine: Here you go mate. ;)  http://i38.tinypic.com/23lm5ow.jpg  http://i37.tinypic.com/20kyxvn.jpg  http://i36.tinypic.com/10s90ro.jpg  The first model with the sword was released back in 1990 for rogue trader and although the description said the helmet was fixed as you can see it's not. It was only with the release of the third model that was designed to be used with the second edition plastic armed marines that the helm was at last properly fixed in place. The idea behind it is the the images are directly fed to the marine's brain so that to the wearer it would appear that he wasn't wearing a helm at all. In practice this would be all well and good until you needed to look up. Mine are based on the original model but will have the fixed helm and the new FW style armoured bands on the legs because they look really nice.  Mikhail: Yeah making my own armature to sculpt over is probably the most practical way for me to do these as it save me having to cut up expensive terminator models and I have a much greater range of movement. These guys are the pinnacle of my truescale obsession that has haunted me for nearly a decade now. :D I tend to work too quickly and don't let the gs dry before moving on. I'm covering the leg as a whole with GS then adding a thin band of GS around the leg to make the lip of the armour and blending it in.  Terminatorinhell: I use vaselene and the GW sculpting tool, I just work it in small circles. You can use water but I prefer the vaseline because it's easier to work with.  twistinthunder: Hit the nail on the head mate, it is indeed Crusade armour. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/208488-pre-heresy-madness/page/2/#findComment-2489809 Share on other sites

Doghouse
Thanks mate. :P  Bit of a side project on the go now after a conversation with a few of the guys over on the Great Crusade.  I'm currently experimenting with a Mk I marine whilst cutting and building armatures and have decided to build the infamous second regiment before they became the second legion and were lost to time. It's still kind of rough and ready at the moment but it's getting there, bit of a rush job though so I need to go back and clean up the model here and there but he's getting there, need to bulk out the greaves on the legs and add the chain mail as well.  I'll go into greater detail about these later but for now here is the WIP.  http://i37.tinypic.com/2rmxu8h.jpg  http://i36.tinypic.com/wlewc4.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/208488-pre-heresy-madness/page/2/#findComment-2490532 Share on other sites
Pulse
He is looking great, the proportions so far look very good. Â The only negative i can see is the pouches around the waist. Why not sculpt the armour and such first and then worry about the details after? :ermm: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/208488-pre-heresy-madness/page/2/#findComment-2490569 Share on other sites

Tsuro
My only concern is that why the hell can't I work this quickly...hehehe  seconded.  These are fantastic, and I'm seriously impressed with your armatures. Especially the heads. (although casting them without armour feels like you're making more work for yourself, but I guess if it was the other way you couldn't work up those crazy pre-heresy styles.) Doghouse
Cheers guys! :P Â Pulse: The pouches cover the belt so rather than sculpt all of the belt I can just add the pouches as I go. The rest of the bulk of the armour will be in place before I start adding the main detailing though. ;) Â Dragunov: Yeah maybe a little too quickly, I gotta slow down with these things. :P Â Tsuro: Thanks mate. The heads are made by a company called hasslefree so I can't claim to have sculpted those. I can sculpt faces but it just so much easier to use theirs for the time being and they can be used commercially as well which is a bonus for budding sculptors. Â To be honest though I really am enjoying sculpting each one in turn and I still have so much more to learn about sculpting that these are great practice. I think the easiest way to do something like this for an army would be to make multi-part minis then cast them so I can mix and match. Ideally what I'm hoping to learn from these guys is posing miniatures and seeing what I can do.
