Blood Angels Sanguinary Guard [commission]

Recommended Posts

I thought I throw up a photo of the Sanguinary Guard that I'm working on. Not only does it allow me to show you what I'm doing but it allows my client to see my progress too :). Once these guys are done there's a squad of Vanguard Vets to come as well...

As you can see early days yet, as I'm still blocking in the basic colours and shading, but now that I've got a couple of colours on there and not just gold I'm starting to feel much happier about how they're looking.

Thanks

James

Looking good so far! :P I see you're going for blueish shading on the wings. I'm doing the same on my Sanguinor and since it's my first attempt at painting white this way I'm totally unsure of how it'll look like after highlighting. I hope both yours and my minis turn out looking good.

Good luck with your Sanguinor Brother Captain. Normally I start white from Space Wolves Grey, but as there the wings are such a big part of the mini's I decided to go down to blue first for a little more depth abd texture.

Thanks

A few photos showing my progress with this commission:

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/Commission%20Work/SangGuard4.jpghttp://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/Commission%20Work/SangGuard3.jpghttp://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/Commission%20Work/SangGuard2.jpg

All the basic colours are blocked in now with the exception of the metallics on the hafts and blades of the axes, so once those are done then it's on with the highlighting :P.

I decided to try something a little different with the blades of the Glaives. I recently saw Lazarus666's tutorial on painting fiery weapons and thought it might work with different colours. I'm happy to say that I think it does...

thanks

Glad you like them :P. Hopefully you'll like them even more when they're finshed. (shouldn't be too long now, hopefully.) I think I've worked out a quick but nice paint scheme for the Vanguard Vets. as well so they shouldn't take too long either (again hopefully).

Once thing I'm thinking of doing with these guys though (cause I didn't notice till I'd undercoated them) is drilling out the gun barrels. Shouldn't take but a minute and will look mcuh nicer...<_<

thanks

Latest update photos:

Slowly working the wings on the jump packs up to the same look as the ones on the shoulder pads. They're a bit of a pain to work on though so it's taking a while to get them done. Still need to do the other two's wings then they'll all get highlighted and glazed at the same time for consistency.

Next up is highlighting up the gold before finishing up all the details...

thanks

This is how the 'mission is looking just now. The SG with the loincloth still needs his armour tidyied up (which will be done tonight) before the armour and wings both get highlighted, then it's detailing and tidying anything I've missed :D.

From looking at other people's stuff, I think that the effect on the armour that I'm working toward is Metallic Metal highlighted using Non Metallic Metal technique. If it is then that's cool, if not then that's also cool. I'm just aiming for a nice 'warm' gold that shines in the right places .

cheers

I assume from this that you mean you are using metallic paints, but highlighting in a way similar to the NMM technique. I keep meaning to try this to see how it looks, from yours it looks great

Thanks mate. Yeah, you summed up what I'm trying to do there. It's actually kinda easy as long as you keep your paints nicely watered down. I've found that using glazes of Scorched Brown helps with tieing the layers together smoothly as well.

Finally, nearly there with these guys. All that's left to do now is to paint some of the 'dangly' bits of ornamentation on their legs/shoulder guards and do the bolter shell casings on two of the Angelus' magazines.

I did a rough calculation when I'd finished painting the wings ast night and worked out that with all the layers that went onto them I've painted something like 3200 feathers! It was a bit of a struggle at times I can tell you and I feel sorry for anyone who's painting more than 5 of these at a time....

Here's how they're looking at around 95% finished:

Thes next photos are to show some stuff that's not visible from the angles in the ones above:

Thanks mate :). The blades were done as follows (please note that this method was adapted from Lazarus666's 'Firey Weapon' tutorial ).

1- Basecoat Chaos Black

2- Paint streaks of a 1:1 mix of Regal Blue and Chaos Black from the edge of the blade towards the back (you're only wanting to go about 2/3rds of the way back though so some of the black stays visible).

3- Paint streaks of Enchanted Blue in the same way as you did above.

4- Paint streaks of Ice Blue in the same way.

5- Repeat with Space Wolves Grey.

6- Finally use Skull White to give a harsh highlight to the very edges of the blade.

For steps 3-5 your streaks should be getting shorter each time, although you can add some longer ones in places to give a less 'uniform' appearance to the 'flames'

Then you can sit back and admire your blade burning with a cold fire....

Wow, if only you could paint Pig. These might have turned out ok.

errr I mean they look great. Very neat painting scheme.

But it might benefit from some more contrast, perhaps some mithril on the edges, and inking down the under parts and recesses. Metal, metallic especially is so hard to make interesting.

No one has anything to say at all? I know they aren't flawless but with the work that's been put in they can't be that bad can they....

Don't you love that? :D

I read that top part twice before I read the rest of your reply and I was like 'what the...!?' then I read the rest of it and I can see what you mean. What I might try and do is apply another glaze of Scorched Brown to just the shadowed parts. That should help to add a little more contrast....

I'd also fade it in with a little Ogryn FLesh, but certainly an additional highlight would always be welcome - a sharp highlight e..g mithril with a spot of water to let it flow, applied as a really fine line...

I don't have Ogryn Flesh unfortunately, but that's one of the great things about the way that I've shaded these guys. (not that I'm not grateful for your suggestion). I can add glazes of Scroched Brown which fade themselves into the deepest shadows nicely as the original shading is a mix of Scorched Brown and Chaos Black.

Since you're the second person to mention Mithril Silver though I think I will go back and hit the brightest areas with a harsh highlight of said silver :)

cheers

Ok, so I went back and hit these mini's with some Mithril Silver and I'm really glad I did because I think that it's made them so much better:http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/Commission%20Work/DSCF9055.jpg
