hey guys, i've got a conundrum and a possible solution. normally it takes me 2-5 hours to paint 1 MARINE! and that is unacceptable to me. now here is my solution idea. army painter dragon red. i've seen a video tutorial on how to use it and that combined with badab black/baal red wash could yield a good looking marine in less than 10 or 15 minutes each. now what i'm wondering is what have other people's expiriences been with this paint?

I saw jawas vid of it and it's a nice color. I primed my marines with skull white primer and basecoated blood red with a large brush 40ish marines in an hour. washing took another hour. I could see the first part only taking 15 minutes. if you;re just gonna wash all your guys you don;t have to be very particular on the basecoat so I don't see how the old fashion way would take so long. I could definately see a lot less time working on tanks though. Each tank took about an hour to basecoat for me.

All I can say is that Army painter is a pretty thick paint, even if I use it only on days that match weather they suggest (Heat and humitity) even if I shake the damn thing for a long time.

You can lose detail if you aren't careful with the stuff and move the can around a lot. While I don't use it for my rank and file troops I do use it for all my vechiles because I hate brush strokes.

Pure Red is an almost exact match for GW Blood Red and I use this to basecoat my Blood Angels. Anything that gets missed with the spray can be touched up with the blood red. Then Baal Red wash, highlight and pick out details and your're done.

If anyone is interested, Pure Red actually looks "redder". When placed next to each other, a mini brushed with GW Blood Red seem to look a little more orange. It's very subtle, but it's something to keep in mind, especially if you are trying to achieve a specific look or want the pure red sprayed minis to perfectly blend with blood red painted ones.

I recently stripped an old rhino of it's paintjob and I've sprayed Pure Red directly onto the bare plastic. Two thin coats and I have a lovely smooth, even finish. Just be careful not to coat it on too thick, as some other people have already warned. Do a couple of thin coats and you'll be fine.

I have used the Pure Red for quite some time and have painted plenty of models with it. I like it alot and the color is pretty close to blood red, just not as orange like was mentioned above. It is close enough that I have no desire to check out the Dragon Red version, it just looks too dark to me.

I actually primer them white first, I think it helps the red cover easier without as much paint and makes the red a little more vibrant (and old habits die hard).

Then I actually go over the hole model with a really thinned down coat of blood red to give it that 'Blood Red' look. That takes just a minute for a marine and you can get any spots you missed with the spray. It is hard to get every little crevice covered and keep the spray thin.

Then I wash the whole model with a sepia wash. I tried the black wash and I think it requires too much cleanup, and so takes longer.

Next I highlight with blazing orange and a little bit of fiery orange here and there.

Finally I'll wash it with Baal red. This really tones down the oranges and makes all the highlights less extreme as well as making the overall look a nice deep red.
