The Sardaukar

Origin

The Sardaukar were created By the order of the High Lords of Terra, as part of the 19th founding in M36, to strengthen the Arraken Sector's defense against the newly developing Ork Waaagh that had been forming ‘Dac-killa’ and act as bulwark against future incursions into imperial space from Xenos Pirates and Chaos Brigands whose raids were on the increase across Segmentum Tempestus.

History

The chapters History has been permanently marked by the influence of the Arraken sector’s Ruling Family the Imperial house of Corrino, and the Twin Tragedies that have pushed the chapter further away for self governance and further into a future that is not of there making.

Thus Far they have nearly faced near annihilation on two separate occasions the first being the “Landsraad Uprisings” of M38 in which a Faction of the Sector Governance (whose name has been stricken from history) attempted a coup d'état to over throw the sectors ruling house: The Imperial House of Corrino. Slow to mobilize to what they saw a petty squabble among the sectors nobility (and therefore expecting a swift resolution) and occupied by their pending deployment of the chapter’s line companies to the Salonika Crusade, they abstained from taking a side in the conflict. The war escalated and began to disrupt the flow of supplies and goods to the Chapters home world of Salusa and the chapter began to evaluate the necessity of their entry into the uprising; Fearful that the Sardaukar would enter the on the side of the Corrinos, the rebellious factions launched a lightning blitz on the chapters Homeworld.

Under the guise of Imperial merchant marine fleet they were able to launch an atomic bombardment on the surface of Salusa, affecting over eighty-six percent of the planet. Almost Immediately after the commencement of bombardment the Chapter fleet assets on station begun to respond the rebel fleet , that knowing there was now no hope of an escape, there off loaded there remaining ordinance into the chapter’s fleet yards and then detonated there warp drives alongside the both chapters Battle Barge and strike cruisers. In this one action over 75% of the chapter was destroyed*.

*Historians Note: In this action also accounted for over 58% of the rebels Navy, and the bitter irony of this event was that the Chapter leadership had begun to view the rebellious factions as the better collection Houses to assume governance of the Arraken sector, and and according to still existing records it would have been likely for the chapter enter the conflict on their behalf.

In the Dark Days surrounding this incident Rafael Corrino and his house embraced the wounded chapter and spent a great amount of coin and influence to help the chapter restock and repair, for their part the Chapter swore fealty to Rafael and his Family in perpetuity so long as the Corrinos would “always stand with the chapter”.

Within Months of the Chapters recall from Crusade the “Landsraad Uprising” was crushed utterly, though much of the history of this time has been sealed, it is recorded Corrinos hunted the rebellions commanders for years to follow, and that upon their finding the rebellion’s central leadership; they and their families were given to the chapter and suffered torture for nearly 745 days (one day for every fallen battle brother) culminating in there public Execution by Immolation on midnight of the final day.

True to their word the Corrinos continued to support the chapter long after the uprising had ended, the Governors family continued to make large expenditures on the behalf of the chapter, and conduct extensive negotiations with the Cult of Mars on the behalf of the chapter, they have succeed in procuring sizeable amounts of Artificer, and Archeotech armour in addition newer marks of equipment normally reserved for more established Mechanicus client chapters. The end result of this is that by 2 centuries hence the chapter was back to its full fighting stance of 1200 warrior, but now completely beholden by Oath to their “generous” benefactors.

Though the Imperium has spent great resources to terraform the world of Salusa from the blasted rock it has become, to this day it can still be classified more than a Deathworld. Until the day that their Homeworld has been reasonably restored, the chapter has relocated its fortress Monastery on the sector's Capital; the hive world of Kaitain (though this is not to mean that the Sardaukar have abandon their home world, they still train heavily on the world and have their chapter Reclusiam, Librarium, and chapters crypts located on the site of their former fortress monastery).

Beliefs

The Chapter’s Marines are men stern and humorless outlook on their place within the Imperium of Man. Trained from boyhood to be to optimize the concepts of Fearless in the face of duty, Pitiless in the face of the Enemy, and to have a fanatical devotion to both the Emperor, and to the Chapter.
They are vary acceptant of Liberians amongst there ranks believing the Psyker to part the linage of the Gracious God Emperor gifted onto mankind, on the flip side of the coin though They are utterly intolerant of the mutant and the heretic feeling that these undesirables are an affront to mans holy form. On the Space Marines deviation from humanity; they feel themselves to be "a superior form of life to the common man, as An Astartes has a form crafted by the Emperor"
The chapter Places a high value on loyal to brothers in arms, Oaths to though that support them and to fail one brother or ones allies is to commit a sacrilege.

Combat Doctrine

Sardaukar Doctrine emphasizes ruthlessness, near-suicidal disregard for personal safety, and the use of cruelty and terror as a weapon in order to weaken opponent’s Moral resolve. The chapters Marines are known to favour the use of jump packs, even using them in tactical squads to facilitate rapid shifts in their battle line. Due to the manner in which they have been known to prosecute their wars the Sardaukar have gained an infamous reputation across the Arraken sector, which has caused many an opponent to surrender out right to them and face Imperial Justice than face the Atrocities that would be rent upon them by the Sardaukar.

Organisation

The Chapter in its organization follows the dictates of the codex Astartes in the formation and command structure of its line and reserve companies the only remarkable deviation in the makeup of the chapter is the existence of 3 scout companies and each battle company consisting of two extra Tactical squads. This extra set of scout companies is due to a High rate of attrition amongst neophyte aspirants, 54% of inductees die before entry into the scout portion of their training and a further 62% mortality thereafter.

Geneseed

The Sardaukar were founded of the Ultramarines' Geneseed, due to the purity of the original sample to which the chapter was gifted the Chapter apothecaries are very selective of their candidates ensure that there is no genetic of physical deviation on the part of the candidate, and have been known to refuse the reuse of a battle brothers Geneseed should it have suffered from mutation. As such there is little genetic drift to be found in current tithes of the Sardaukar’s gene seed when compared to the original sample taken to found the chapter.

First off, welcome to Liber Astartes. I hope you have thick skin, because many of us can be fairly blunt with our critiques.

Secondly, please read the Liber Astartes D.I.Y. Guide if you haven't already. It will save you a lot of grief, really.

Thirdly, understand that while the universe of Warhammer 40k is built on references, parodies, and pastiches taken all very seriously, there is a limit to just how blatant the reference is. Your Chapter has very, VERY obvious nods to Dune, and it breaks the immersion. If you have to point towards your influences, do it in a more subtle manner.

This is indeed vary true but as I continue to back fill and add more fiction to the chapter (both between its founding and its lost of autonomy and thereafter) I am hoping to better mesh the overwhelming amount of dune references with the 40k background and get more in line with the GW’s universe I did indeed skim the beginners guide but going through this more and more I think it might be better to go back and reread it, and I’m being very careful to keep any over jargon or use of the other great houses out of there fiction other than a mention In passing if at all.

Also, some of the points in the History section don't mesh well with how the universe of 40k works too -- like a rebel force directly attacking an Astartes Homeworld. This almost NEVER succeeds, and the only forces that have the capability to do so are either Xenos (Orks using overwhelming numbers, Tyranids eating EVERYTHING, or Eldar being generally sneaky), or Renegade Marines (re: the Red Corsairs and the Night Lords attacking the Fortress Monastery of the Marines Errant).

Then there's the 'devotion' to house Corrino. Long standing alliances (like the Space Wolves and that navigator family in Wolf Blade) are possible, but devotion to a specific house? Nuh-uh, won't work.

The fidelity shaped to appear by the sectors rulers to seen to the outside world as not utter devotion to the rulers of the sector (thou it is), but devotion to the sector and its people for their aid in a time of need, to appear as by extension a way of supporting the imperial rule of the sector, at least that they way I will frame it in further edits.

That's the thing: utter devotion to a family or rulers doesn't work, when one remembers the Autonomy that a Chapter has. Quite frankly, many Chapters answer to no one but themselves and the Emperor. Even Chapters that have a hand in ruling the territories under their purview (the Ultramarines and the Crimson Fists) don't do this, and if anything, the rulers answer to the whims of the Chapter Master.

So, a Chapter may work in hand with a specific planet by dearth of an ancient and binding alliance, but that's the extent of it. A Chapter will not tolerate, in ANY way, interference into its daily workings or attempts at influencing its actions by its 'allies'.

Also, a minor quibble: spellcheckers are your friend. ;)

I just edited a portion of the artical to better fit...

"True to their word the Corrinos continued to support the chapter long after the uprising had ended, the Governors family continued to make large expenditures on the behalf of the chapter, and conduct extensive negotiations with the Cult of Mars on the behalf of the chapter, they have succeed in procuring sizeable amounts of Artificer, and Archeotech armour in addition newer marks of equipment normally reserved for more established Mechanicus client chapters. The end result of this is that by 2 centuries hence the chapter was back to its new full fighting stance of 1200 warriors, but now completely beholden to their “generous” benefactors."

So the Great House built the chapter up from 250 or so fighting men to around 1200 basically expending the effort to almost create a brand new chapters worth of material, but on the note you mentioned your right and one of the plot hooks I had bouncing around was the choice between the Corrinos and the Imperium because I’m sure a choice such as that would have to come up eventually any way.

As for the success of the rebels also attack on the chapter, was it? They chose in an act of desperation to cease the moment knowing that if a space marine chapter were in enter the war they were done. Since the process of deployment from the sector for crusade, and their core world defenses were weaker there was no better time to strike “Now or Never”. They were hoping that there Raiding force would cripple the chapter and buy time to de-throne the governor lord Corrino and take control of the sector. After they legitimize their rule the Sardaukar would be powerless to take their revenge less they be declared rouge (or better yet blame it on their enemy since they have no proof that they were there. Of course thou, this last reasoning this seems like a bit of a sledge hammer to be use to fix a minor fault), but the space marines responded to the Rebel fleet faster then anticipated, and what was supposed to be a “lightning raid” quickly became a last stand with no hope of an escape, and the raids abject failure ensured that the chapter would enter against them and once redeployed to the sector they swiftly ended the uprising, again stuff I will better frame in future edits.

Thus far my biggest issue with this whole thing is that the Rebels attacked an Adeptus Astartes homeworld and apparently succeeded? Where are your Void Shields? Your Space Defense Lasers? Why in the hell would the rebels possess firepower capable of leveling a Fortress Monastery? This whole thing is just a slap in the face to the established fluff of how truly powerful a Fortress Monastery is. If you are rationalizing all this with the Crimson Fists example, remember that they had a Warhead detonate INSIDE their monastery, not from an outside source.

Other than that minor/major quibble, I really like the whole noble houses and scheming and stuff. However, like Azul, I have to point out that Space Marines would be above all of this. They might covertly/overtly aide one side, but they would always be seen as the top of the proverbial food chain, and not subservient to ANYONE. In the words of Tu'Shan, Chapter Master of the Salamanders: "My sword is at the Emperor's Command. I answer to no other man, living or dead." Still, I would like to see how the Space Marines Lords interact with the Noble houses who are all trying to curry their favor/seek their protection/seek their manpower to use against each other.

The word of the Marines would be enough. No more is needed. At the least, that would be enough to force an inquisition enquiry into waht happened, and when it comes to Traitors willing to attack an Adeptus Astartes base, they Inquisiton absolutely would not stop till they had found out the truth. Even if the inquisitors didnt particularly like marines, the chance that anyone might think they could get away with attacking a vital pillar of the imperium unpunished is far too risky to be allowed.
