Luna wolves painting help

Once I saw the new Forgeworld pre-heresy models, I knew I had to make a squad. I decided on the Luna Wolves because of the first two books in the heresy series.

So I ended up ordering a 5man squad of the mk4s, some jump packs from chapterhouse, and some chainswords and bolt pistols.

I've come accross a problem, how to paint them. I wanted to go for the color that is on the cover of the first two heresy books, but I dont know where to go with it. (it doesnt help that I am partly color blind)

I started off with one of the new foundation paints, dhebeb stone, and then a black wash. Where should I go from here?? I dont know what paints to use to acheive the color I want. Also, does anyone know what colors they used when they changed from Luna Wolves to Sons of Horus?

Help with either color scheme would be greatly appreciated.

(and yes i used the search function, but couldnt find any good related articles)

Heya, as far I can tell in Horus Rising the armour is described mainly as being white for the standard Luna Wolves. In False Gods, after the change of name to the Sons of Horus the armour is described as being "a pale, greenish hued metallic" colour. That's about all I can tell so far.

As far as I can see they are just a standard white colour. There's a pic from the Lexicanum here Luna Wolves Image

and another one for the Sons of Horus: Sons of Horus Pic

However on the Horus Rising book cover the marines there are wearing a sort of pale-ish grey armour instead of white so am really not sure what's going on there to be honest.

Pay close attention to the studded shoulder pad and accompanying arm - they are pearlescent (shiny) which is how they are described in Horus Rising. I've no idea how one would actually paint that however.. short of using shiny white car paint with a black ink wash for shading (proper ink not GW washes since they are matt).

I always imagined the lunar Wolves with a slightly off white colour scheme. Astronomican Grey would be a perfect colour in my opinion and it isn't too hard to use as it is a foundation paint. A simple highlight with skull white would look really nice.

For the Sons of Horus im not 100% sure. Rotting flesh might be an idea?

Alternatively you could try several green washes over a silver under coat. This might sound a bit strange but i've seen it done really well before.

Of course it would be wise to try several methods on test minis, but i'm confident the Astronomican Grey and Green washes would work well for the respective schemes.

Hope i helped and would love to see your results. I absolutely love the new FW kits, especially the Heresy Mk.

Thanks a bunch for all your tips guys.

I was actually thinking going with the more light grey-ish scheme thats on the cover of the first book. I know their armor is more white, but hey, my minis, my paint scheme lol.

I did look into painting with a metal base/green washes, but im gonna use a test mini and see how i like it before i make any definate plans.

and i hope to post pics of them as soon as i get them done:)

Just so you know, I think the cover of the first book represents sons of horus as opposed to luna wolves - they have the eye of horus as their legion marking. False Gods is the one to use for Luna Wolves.
