WIP Pre-Heresy FW Mk3 Imperial Fists Kill team

Recommended Posts

Having ordered the 5 man Mk3 squad from forgeworld yesterday afternoon, I was amazed when the postman knocked on the door this morning and handed me a small box from GW. Not expecting my Mk3 untill at least the 24th of August, I expected to find a subscription modle or suchlike. To my amazment, I opened it to find my squad of mk3 marines, ordered less than 24 hours ago, all nicely bagged up and ready to go!

Here they are, still greasy in release agent. They are excelent casts, with just a few imperfections around the soft armour at the hip joint.

My only worry is that from the back, you can see the lower half of the body armour is slightly too thin for my liking, Im just hoping it wont snap or wear through as I work on them.

I assembled the legs, needing only minor GS patches due to air bubbles. The torsos are slightly more problematic seeing as the resin tabs attaching them to the sprue must be fully removed to allow them to fit the legs. However, unless you use a dremel to grind them out, its virtualy impossible to remove them and not cut into the waist armour.

In the end I had to remove the triangular sections of resin either side of the groin plate to be able to get a scalpel into the waist.

Interestingly, it would appear that those triangles of resin have to be removed anyway to get the two halves to fit snugly....

@Shadow Nugz - I don't know yet. Ive never painted yellow before and im waiting to see how vivid the method im using is before I start adding battle damage ect.

yeah the little triangles are basically just resin flash from the moulds. You will find lot of FW bits have such flaps that need trimming.

I'm looking forward to getting my hands on some... if only I could get paid already.

Update

All bodies are now assembled and primed, Ive begun to apply the first layers of basecoat as a test for colour. Iv'e never painted yellow on such a large area and thus im being very cautious as I paint.

@Brother Khairon - Strangely enough I ordered them at the same time as the squad, but they havent arrived yet......

I didn't realise that they were posable... Aww, now I want them even more. The converter in me is screaming for awesome looking armor on my veterans. As well as new cool models to build and edit. :P

Too bad I already have tons of projects allready going on...

That's good, which ones?

The Umbra Ferox (?), the ones with the box mags and scopes. I thought they matched the IF persona best.

I ordered those ones yesterday for a BA Sternguard Killteam. If yours arrived that quickly, I'll be waiting by my letterbox tomorow morning for them to arrive (in fact I might just get my sleeping bag and camp there all night)!

But seriously, those are some of the best looking models I have seen Forgeworld produce in many a year. Just wish I had the funds to buy a squad of each armour type.

Consider this topic very closely watched - can't wait to see what these turn out like!

After being seperated from the camera for the last 3 days, I now present to you the first layers of paint on the IF kill team.....

yeah, im not the worlds best painter. Thats a few layers of light browns and dark yellows washed over with gryphone sepia. Hopfully when it dries and i get get some more paint on they will start to pick up.

On a related note, does anyone else find the sepia wash takes ages to dry compared to the others?

First of the bodies finished and head added. For future reference, what coulor eyes to IF have? Some places say green, others light blue.

Update

Four of the five are done now, just waiting on the guns from FW before I stick the left arms on. I went for blue eyes in the end, but they are so recessed into the helmets that you can't see them anyway.....

I decided on snowy bases because I have never used them before, my marines have lava/ash and my WHFB Lizards have jungle bases. I think they turned out all right, but the coverage of the snow flock isn't the best.

Typically, the GW bare head is bigger than the Mk3 helmeted head....

Incidently, has anyone got theirs yet? Or am I still the only one ;)
