WIP Pre-Heresy FW Mk3 Imperial Fists Kill team

Recommended Posts

Wow, those sculpts are great (although the hands look huge?!), and you have done an excellent job painting them. Really liking the dirty gritty look you have going on. May have to order myself a set of these bad boys to mix in with some of my tac squads....

Looking forward to these guys being finished.

I think they turned out all right, but the coverage of the snow flock isn't the best.

that's why they suggest putting white paint in the glue I guess...

how are you doing this yellow? it look really great!

These are coming along very nicely Exodial, can't wait 'til my Mk.III armour shows up if this is what can be done with them :cuss

I think a touch up with some extra flock would help as well. I always think the problem with snow flock is that it lacks body or bulk and building it up a little with another layer gives it some of the 'fluffiness' of snow that's lacking with just one application.

That said given how grimy your IF are I might actually look to dirty up that snow to match the look of the IF. As it stands it's too pristine, it jars the senses to see a muddy, grimy IF running through pristine snow. We don't get a lot of snow here in Melbourne but I've seen plenty in Wales and what I'm thinking might match the model better is that slush that builds up in the gutters and next to the curbs, it's half-melted and stained with blacks and browns and would match that weathering quite nicely methinks.

This is an extreme example, you don't want it this dirty but you don't want it bright white either. So I'd maybe dirty up the layer you have now and then add a little more 'fresh' snow on top of the older, tainted snow, I think it'd be a better match.

As an aside I'd darken the blood from the gash on the bareheaded guy a bit too, it's a great idea executed well but Astartes blood should be super-oxygenated, it should be a really rich, rich red. It might be worth adding some purple to the mix, maybe lay purple as the base coat and use the bright red to accent it, or maybe just wash some purple over the bright red to make it look a little more like rich Astartes blood.

@SCC - Thats an excellent point with the snow. Ill grime it up on the final one to see how it comes out before applying it to the others.

@Tiny sam - The yellow is very simple to paint. It took me a few goes on the first to get it how I wanted it but then the process sped right up.

A few layers of a 1:2 vomit brown to golden yellow mix. Aiming for even coverage without too much pooling around the rivets.

Wash with brown wash

Layer golden yellow across the armour apart from the deep recesses

Wash with black wash.

When dry, apply a few thin coats of Golden yellow to the large areas (chest, arms etc). I also applied it to the backs of the legs because you can get some nice colour transition there.

Wash these areas with watered down brown wash.

Looking good! DO you have plans to expand beyond kill team?

Not really, while yellow makes a nice change I dont have the time to spare to paint them on a large scale. I ordered a second 5 man squad to make up the 200 pts, but I will probably leave it at that.

Anyone in the UK can just stroll into WHW and buy these btw :)

Than may be so, but I received mine over a week before they where due to release :)

Thanks for all the positive comments guys, they are keeping me motivated to keep painting.

Just a few photos to show the progress. The 4th man has been based and is now waiting for a backpack. I darkened the blood, which really made the difference.

As I was painting the final man, I realised that I have no way of disguingishing (lol at spelling) my sargent from the rest of them. Not wanting to used the overused bare-head leader method, I cobbled together a chain sword arm instead. Because they are PH and pure mk3, some cutting and sticking was required to keep the look.

I also tried to grime up the snow, but it didnt really work that well. Instead, I added some blood splatters to make the bases more diverse.

I dont know what happened to the lighting here, but the camera has just died as I tried to re-take them, just like cameras are wont to do.

Great looking fists there. Was the chainsword conversion difficult to achieve? This is the problem with the kit that I was envisioning. No way of adding a sergeant until the Character Conversion pack is released. I was thinking of doing what you've done but wasn't sure if it was doable...

cheers

Only slightly. I cut the arm above the elbow joint and twisted it so the sword faced away from the body then GS it back into place. To stick the hand, I cut out the mk3 hand as far as the wrist and trimmed the armour ad thin as I dared. I cut a chainsword arm off at the wrist and smoothed off the cut. After that it was simply a matter of GS it neatly in place.

Ive been away recently and little work has been done to the men :verymad:. However, I opened more FW goodies from the post this morning. One set of ferox Umbra bolters and one special weapons set.

Unlike the marines, the weapons casts are not that good. A little messy and warped, but nothing a few blobs of gs wont fix.

I wont be using the rockets because they come supplied with a set of mk6/7 arms

It's nice that they sent you a piece of carpet for the weapons to sit on as well ;). (It's quite a nice one though, we did the hallway and stairs with one very similar :))

It's a shame when FW quality drops like that. I know some work is expected when working with resin but some of the stuff that I've seen my brother get has had me wondering if Quality Control take days off too often. Looks like you've got the know how to fix it though. Looking forward to your next update :)

cheers

Long time no update, so Im here to fix that . The pressure is on to finish these guys before Friday as I start 6th form this year and will have much less time for moddelling. I've now finished 3 of the men, and Im just waiting for the ink to dry on the arms of the last two before I can assemble them.

Not long to go now, they are starting to get tedious to do....
