Dawn of War II: Retribution

Been doing the Guard campaign, pretty interesting/fun so far. Have to like the random nods to various bits of Guard/Inquisition background in the wargear, though it is a bit strange when your in-game inquisitor starts running around with Gregor Eisenhorn's sword...

By the by, B&C actually gets a mention in the Special Thanks section of game's credits.

I'm hoping to see Eliphas, Avitus, Thaddeus and Tarkus as CSM heroes. :P

Oh, and I'm waiting for a twist revealing that the Ancient is in fact Indrick Boreale. B)

Spoilers in regards to the Ancient's identity:

Nope, its Tarkus. Apparently he is repenting for serving under a corrupted Force Commander, who may or may not have been killed by him.

For what may I ask?

Images were used from the Painter, as I recall.

They were indeed. THQ forgot to ask for permission and when this was pointed out kindly agreed to add a thank you note.

You can read about it here:

Ok, now I know that the DoW games are not entirely true to teh "Fluff" of teh 40K universerse, but seriously to have the Blood Ravens Chapter Master as a Worshiper of

Khorne

is taking it a bit too far, he is a Librarian after all!!! Even with this problem im still really enjoying the game so far :P

That's happened more than once in the DoW series I think... Sorcerors worshipping him too and probably a few other Librarians.

I have to say I'm kinda disappointed here... i have a game i ran through on full purity not one point of corruption, so now thats completely wrong? man that kinda sucks

Psyker isn't sorcerer.

Khorne likes anyone dedicatedd to blood shed and violence.

And also hates psykers/sorcerers.

I've always found it messed up in the Dawn of War series why they seem to have a thing for Khornate sorcerers.

Khorne dislikes psyker powers to slay enemies, he find that weak and unworthy. However, we have to remember that himself is somewhat "magic" being one of the most powerful entities of the warp and all, and the fact he "bless" his followers and have no problem with Khârn wielding a enchanted weapon.

Just don't use the Avenger or other killing psyker powers and you are okay.

I have been playing it for 1½ day now and here is my first impressions,

Cons

-The sound issues that have plagued all other DoW titles are still there, albeit in a different form - in my case distortion/feedback noise.

-Non-optimised code (guessing, could just be the engine that sucks) means that the game draws LOADS of memory, and has many memory leaks + often locks up. The games also takes AAAGES to close, free up used memory, and loading times in general are hideous. This is on a decent gaming rig (i7 processor, 12G DDR3-1600 ram, SSD drives etc.) with a fresh OS install mind you.

-The new matchmaking system sucks, 5-10 mins waiting time, at best, is downright despicable. They did hot-fix the you-and-two-mates-having-to-wait-while-searching-for-game error for the Last Stand mode, although it still crops up on occasion.

-I have never seen so many spelling errors before in a computer game.

-the interface in single player vs large armies, resulting in almost blob-like fights.

-All the campaigns are basically the same maps with different objectives and opponents (look, there is that Baneblade again...)

-Chaos campaign feature comic book villain type Chaos Marines and plot.

-The game's inability to import data from DoW 2: Chaos Rising (particularly Last Stand statistics and Hero levels), I like so many others got errors when trying.

-The initial blunder that was made when the game was released a few days ahead of time (Europe) and then the major mistake when the game was subsequently REVOKED. Talk about complete lack of respect for your customers.

-Inquisitor Adrastia's animations, stick figure animation, and poorly executed at that.

-Tyranid campaign = ZzzZzZz.

-Lore issues,

teleporters and warp rifts/gates all over Aurelia, really?

Pros

-The new Hero versus Honor Guard feature

-Overwatch production takes a load off my mind when I just want to experience carnage.

-The new Lord General Hero in Last Stand, fun to play.

-Lord General wielding 2h-weapons in one hand (cybernetic arm).

-The sound track is excellent, very atmospheric and fitting.

-Voice acting is top notch, unlike the first DoW.

This game is in desperate need of a patch.

4.7/10

Really, Nihm? The game seems fine to me, and my computer sucks. The only thing different is that I use an external HD to play the game, so it runs better than my own computer.

Same campaing for everyone IS annoying. They should have done like Winter Assault, but...

And really? General Castor? Doesn't Relic have any Spanish or Portuguese employees? With that moustache it makes even more weird!

Castor means "Beaver" by the way.

But dude, gotta love the Blood Ravens ending.

While I agree with your other points, this I disagree with. I'm finding the guard voices to be a real disappointment. Especially the baneblade. In Winter Asssault we got stuff like:

"ALL GUARDSMEN, FIRE ME TO GLORY!"

"Ready to unleash eleven barrels of hell."

"KEEP FIRING TILL THEY SEE THE GLOW OF OUR BARRELS!"

And the Commissars had some great lines as well:

"FEAR ME, but follow!"

"If you will not serve in battle then you will serve on the firing line *bang*"

"I WILL HAVE SOMEONE'S HEAD FOR THIS!"

Then the guard: (the voice actor does merrick in retribution but its just not the same)

"Whoooar, would ya look at the size of 'em!"

"Orks! Thought I smelt somethin."

"Let's see them fight ALL of us!"

In this, I don't recall any memorable unit quotes from the guard at all. Well, apart from the Ogryns, they were good. But only repeated 2 lines. A small thing to some people, but for me those old unit quotes added a great deal of spirit into the game. As for the rest of the game... meh. Pretty buggy and broken. I can't use anti aliasing or the inquisitor just turns black. The memory leaks are still rampant and my 4gb system just goes "wut" and takes an age to load then crashes when I exit the game. The sound stutters at times for no real reason and it just isn't as good as DoW1 and its expansions (excluding soulstorm) :) Those were the days.

I didn't get any real problem with the game as well, except for the fact that I essentially finished the Space Marine campaign in one sitting.

Some observations:

- So Gabriel Angelos really did become the Chapter Master in the end. What d'you know, it dovetailed quite nicely with that White Dwarf article from long ago. I suppose the Blood Ravens we see 'now' (as in the current 999.M41 timeline) are a back-to-basics result of what happened.

- Tarkus was the Ancient. Big surprise. Sadly this means that the Corrupt Ending was canon, though there's no clue as to who the traitor was in the end. Given what Tarkus said, it's likely it was the Force Commander, but it could also be the other sergeants.

- Related to that, what ever happened to the 4th Company? Surely it wasn't the force that Diomedes was leading, was it?

SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE CAMPAIGN

I dont think the cannon traitor was the FC, theres a piece of wargear that is supposedly his hammer that he killed Ulkair with, and it talks about how he was branded renegade along with his squad. If he was the traitor, he wouldnt have been been branded renegade, he would have been killed. Jonah, Martellus, Tarkus, and Cyrus are all in the game, the FC is not the traitor for the reasons stated above, so that leaves Thaddeus or Avitus.

I believe it was Avitus, he was the only one that Kyras met on Kronus(Taddeus wasn't there, Cyrus fights alongside you, so does Martellus, and Jonah is supposibly dead now). Tarkus explain exactly who he kills.

Remember, to be Full Corrupt or Corrupt you have to kill Diomedes. So either is the purity end or the neutral one.

How is the campagn-map? Is it like Dawn of war 2 where you could jump from a couple of standard defend and kill missions with a few storydriven missions as well or is it like in chaos risning with all of the missions are storydriven?

It's like Chaos Rising; all story missions, with a couple optional side-missions.
