Vamp's Veteran Company thread

Recommended Posts

Hey guys and gals!

To go along with my 4th Company project I am working on some expansions to my 1st company apocalypse army, so rather than cross the two projects over I'd rather keep them self contained - hence a new thread for them.

At the moment I am working on expanding the dreadnought contingent the 1st company sports, with both a Venerable and Ironclad in the works.

First up, the Ironclad, which many of you may remember from my Call of the Imperium project which sadly was passed over as I wasn't happy with how the model was turning out in the time scale we had. Well now there is no limit on how long I can work on it, I've decided to continue the project as I do think the model has tonnes of potential. So, here it is:

Now the Venerable. I have made a start on his base, though it's VERY early days yet - The idea I'm going for is a Tyranid capillary tower breaking out of the ground with a dead Broodlord laying over it, crushed under the dreadnought's foot. Also finished his lightning claws (which you can see WIP on the second photo) but need to get the power fist mounting done before I can attach them. The model will be armed initially with a twin-linked heavy flamer and dreadnought close combat weapon with heavy flamer - a true 'bug stomper'. As only three of my small circle of opponents play marines I think this is a sound investment. That said, the main gun is magnetised so I can swap out for something else if needed.

I like this one the best, what did you use for the torso

The model is made from the standard Ironclad dreadnought kit, with a plasticard strip the shape of an eagle wing glued either side of the sarcophagus, a standard marine chestplate with the aquila filed off glued to the sarcophagus front, a marine helmet for the head, and a plasticard strip for the tail. Then over the top of it all is a copious amount of green/grey stuff built up in layers to form the aquilla. The eagle heads are from the backpack from the space marine captain sprue.

Update time!

So work has commenced on 5 Sternguard to bulk out one of my squads, making use of the excellent new Forgeworld armour packs. Iron armour has always been one of my favourite images from 40k, along with Crusade armour.

Only one pack at a time, as money is tight, so I started with the Iron armour:

The green is surprisingly simple - Orkhide Shade foundation over Chaos Black Spray, 2 thinned down coats of Dark Angels Green, Thraka Green wash, and then finally highlighted with Gretchin Green foundation paint. The yellow is even simpler - Iyanden Darksun washed in Devlan Mud. I'll highlight the edges eventually, but the green is taking up my time atm.

This is absolutely amazing, I can't believe more people haven't commented :P

The dreadnoughts are dope as all hell, and I love both their poses. Although the Ironclad seems a tad too agile for a dreadnought, the rule of cool overrides all and I most definitely approve. Where is the massive flamer from if I may so enquire?

As for the infantry, they look really good, that orange/yellow is great, but I wonder if the highlights on the green shouldn't be toned down a bit? The yellow doesn't need highlighting I think.

Cheers very much!

The armour will be getting a wash of devlan mud once the rest of the details are finished, which should tone down the highlights again. Once that's done then I'll be prising them off their bases and getting some scenic ones prepared.

The heavy flamer is a flamestorm cannon from the Baal Predator kit.

Long overdue update.

I am currently working on 3 ironclad dreadnoughts and a contemptor to bulk out my force, going for a bit of a boarding action theme so dreadnoughts and terminators are all the rage. :)
