... I played a 1000-point game against an Imperial Guard infantry army. I tabled my opponent and lost just 6 Assault Marines. Things weren't looking so good when we deployed armies as I had known for about a week that I would be playing against Guard, so had festooned my army with melta weapons, only to find myself facing infantry.

I was able to engage his lascannon teams with a multi-melta attack bike, eventually causing them to break (though it took what felt like 29 rounds of combat!). My Flamestorm Baal destroyed 1 infantry squad and some Ratlings. My Blood Talon Dreadnought munched its way through Harkan's squad and Straken's command squad.

Much of my opponent's strategy seemed to rely upon a hammer unit of fully maxed-out Ogryn. The highlight of the game (from my perspective) was assaulting these Ogryn with an Assault Squad and Librarian. My Epistolary promptly rolled 7 attacks for Might of Heroes, and insta-killed 5 Ogryn with his Sanguine Sword! Some additional damage from my Furious Assault Marines meant that I ended up winning the combat by 14(!) and wiping out the Ogryn in one assault phase with a sweeping advance!

Who needs Mephiston when a 150-point Librarian can do that?!

Who needs Mephiston when a 150-point Librarian can do that?!

Ive thaught about this a few times, the only big sticking point is the base initiative 4. With 2 wounds no invul and a potential 8 st10 attacks on the charge (with chapter banner) hes going to die if you cant strike first with him. I5 with furious charge goes along way but any nasty cc unit that can strike at the same time is going to be a big problem. I'm finding myself more tempted to use a codicer in a squad with banner (he can turn sanguinary and honour guard units into doom encarnate in the right circumstances) and 5 st10 attacks at I4/5 is nothing to sneeze at. You could even go mad and take 2, its only 50pts more without JP's, spreads target priority and opens the door to mutualy buffing powers (maybe keep one libby out of base to base on the charge to cast unleash rage while the squad and other libby thrash away, and then step in next round with another sang sword or whatever.

Anyway libbys are definateley pure awsome when you fight a combat on your own terms, tho they do lack staying power when things go against them I find (which is what reclusiarchs are for).

Because Mephie could easily do this himself w/o the RAS. He also provides something that a regular Libby doesn't, the psychological effect he brings to the table. I've had Meph shore up an incredibly weak flank just by moving in that direction and making my opponent rethink his strategy in regards to heading that direction.

This is of course not to discount BA librarians. They are amazingly cost effective for an HQ unit, and give you a lot of excellent options. I love 'em. Mephiston is just really a whole different animal. He's more akin to being able to take a Hive Tyrant that's MUCH easier to hide in an Meq army than he is to another Libby.
