Most you've ever spent on HQ's?

Today I'm heading to warhammer world to play on one of the big boards 3000 points aside. Only friendly so I thought I'd plug in some of the characters I never take because I can for once and doing my army list I realist that I've nearly got 1000 points in Hq's which seems excessive.

In a 1500 point game last week I ran:

Logan Grimnar 275

Canis Wolfborn 185

Rune Priest 105

-Melta Bomb

Wolf Priest

-Saga of the Warriorborn 140

-melta bomb

For a total of 705pts!! I lost horribly due to lack of troops...

I must admit, I am obsessed with more boots for points. Partly due to the fact I used to play star wars min's and quickly got tired of the unique fest it was. XD

Most Expensive planned is easily the Wolf Lord

Thunder Wolf

Runic Armour

Twin Lightning Claws

Belt of Russ

Saga of the Warrior

265

+ A Fast attack unit of Thunder Wolves as escort. Between 200/295

+ Rune Priest with Living Lightning and Tempest Wraith, able to cast two powers. 150 Points

Total: 615/730 depending on Thunder Wolf

The ultimate in killing, but pretty much a deathstar short of 2000. Still, good luck in trying to decide which is the worst threat, the Thunder Wolves with him or the Wolf Lord tearing through Rank and File troops with all the savage speed of a noise marine consuming a line of powder/cups of coffee on the hint of a new high. And hope the foe holds in combat well enough for me to take that charge to the next unfortunate bunch of fellows. XD

In the old codex: 175pts for a WL, 173pts for a Wolf Priest, 140pts for a WGBL, and 173pts for a Vendread. 661pts, out of 3k.

These days I dont spend over 300 unless Im taking Bjorn.

My standard list uses both Logan and Njal...

In large (read: 3000+) I use Ulrik and Bjorn as well. Doesn't really work when all 4 of them are running around but it is fun.

That must be REALLY fun!

EPICNESS COMBAT!!!

THE BEARDY WARRIORS ARE IN THE HOUSA!

Nice.

Now, in all seriousness, what usually happens when you do that type of list?

I either slaughter EVERYTHING or EVERYTHING of mine gets slaughtered. Still fun though.

As an aside, in apocalypse my group writes several datasheets....

One of them included, all in Runic Terminator Armour (4+ Invulnerables FTW);

Logan, Njal, Ulrik, Ragnar, Homebrew Special Characters to represent the other 10 Wolf Lords, 14 squads of Wolf Guard Terminators (with WS5 and 2 Wounds each, as they are supposed to be basically a group of Wolf Guard Battle Leaders) and A LOT of Land Raiders...

14 Special Characters in Runic Terminator Armour

70 Wolf Guard Terminator Bodyguards in Runic Terminator Armour

14 Land Raiders

That cost a lot and took 8 of us to field but... well lets just say it isn't a pretty sight in combat.

In my 5th Edition games I have always taken Ragnar Blackmane - 240 points; and either a Rune Priest in Terminator Armor with a Chooser of the Slain - 130 points; or a Wolf Priest with Saga of the Hunter and Melta Bombs - 115 points.

So, that would be no more than 370 points for a 2,000 point or less list. If I were to bump up to a 2,500 point game (which I haven't played yet in this edition), then I'd take all three of the above for a total of 485 points.

Keeping the points invested in HQ choices relatively low allows me to take 2 Long Fangs packs, plus 3 or 4 Grey Hunter packs, plus whatever else for support (Scouts, Wolf Guard, a Land Speeder Typhoon, a Land Raider, etc.). Which has proven to be an effective formula for me so far in every game.

I understand the desire to want to play all 4 available HQ choices, because playing characters is fun; but I try to resist the urge and mix it up a bit instead. Drop whatever HQ character isn't really necessary to advantage your army in this game, and then just promise yourself to use a different guy in the next game.

In my last Apoc game with roughly over 40k per side, I fielded around 3k on HQ's, so yours doesn't seem that excessive to me brother :P . The only change I made, was making all my WGBL's to Wolflords, as I was sure to face the brunt of the assault against Deamons, CSM and Orks.....and well, I did :P .

The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to arm yourself with 4 HQ choices and use the HQ choice that best suits your army at your point value. Lords are essential in high point games because of their stat line and gear choice, plus they can be tailored to suit any role. Honestly, you'd be wasting a Wolf Lord if you didn't max out his upgrades anyway.

Rune Priests are excellent HQs in low point games because they don't need any upgrades.

Battle Leaders fit perfectly in between and Wolf Priests are excellent support HQs because they also don't need a lot of upgrades (but absolutely benefit from a couple).
