New to Warhammer and Dark Angels

For a long time I was contemplating on making a Dark Angels army. I'm new to Warhammer 40k and only played a few games with what I have. Going to start playing at the local hobby store and need some opinions on how to build up from where I am now.

Here's what I have:

1x Devastator squad-2 Heavy bolter 1-Missile Launcher 2-Bolt Gun

2x Tactical squad of 10

1x Scout Squad- 5 Snipers

1x Command Squad with Apothecary and Company Champion

1x Company Master

1x Assault Squad of 10 guys

1x Rhino

I want to blast the enemy with heavy firepower from across the table along with being able to hit hard in close combat and I like the way Dark Angels look. Should I stay with Dark Angels or go straight Space Marines? Going for around 2000 points.

Thanks for helping me out!

Welcome to the dark side of the Astartes Foderoth,

Stay with DA, it is an awesome chapter, be aware there are a few downsides in the rules right now but any opponent witt allow you to use C:SM if you want when a build is better suited to those rule sets.

Greenwing, which is what you are about to embark withis probably the least strong of the three different 'wings' but is still competitive once you get the hang of it.

The beauty of DA is you can add DW and RW as you desire and they look great in contrast to the green mass of lads.

Plenty of threads on the viability of each typeof force and their tactics in this forum, enjoy.

Short and sweet advice (take with grain of salt and modify as required), is shoot/withdraw/counter attack/ seize objectives. also shoot the CC units, assault the shooty ones.

Can't goto far wrong there.

Again, welcome to the Rock and please forget your past you are nothing but a Dark Angel now

Welcome on board.

The best advice I can think of now is... DONT BUY STUFF until you are sure thats what you need. That goes for both infantry and tanks

And if you DO buy stuff, build it in a way that it allows flexibility. For example, don't glue the rhino top doors, since you might want to swapt to a razorback or predator :)

Current Dark Angels builds don't use that much the models you have, mainly because:

- Predators and Vindicators and Land Raiders use all 3 Heavy support options. Devastators fall out.

- Assault marines are a bit more expensive in points than other armies.

- Scouts are an elite option, but our scouts are better, since they have WS/BS 4 instead of 3.

As of today, the best army so sit back shooting and having a striking force, I'd say its better to go with Space Wolves: you can get 15 missile launchers pounding away up to 6 different targets and counter-charge across the board enables you to get +1 attack when assaulted (taking a LD test).

I'd suggest you play a couple small games (500-1000 points) and see from there what play-style goes with you :)

Thanks for your replys! I really appreciate the feedback. I have decided to stick with Dark Angels as I like the way they look and their versatility. Heard some people play deathwing and ravenwing in town. Gunna check them out and go from there.

Thanks again,

Foderoth

Just remember - if you aren't going to use many bikes or terminators (or in some cases, even if you are using them) you are much better off using Codex: Space Marines.

You can still paint them as Dark Angels and use their back story, but use the SM codex purely for games/army building.

The reason for this is that Space Marines basically have almost the same rules as Dark Angels, only cheaper (in points) or slightly better in virtually every scenario except bikes and terminators.

From what I gathered reading the differnent forums, DA is not a starter army for newbies. That hasn't stopped me, and I loose all the time. I suck what can I say, but I have fun. Thats all I care for. I would stick to one codex, i do not like using DA and using SM stats and points costs. If you loose you have an excellent excuse why you lost, you have a DA codex LOL. I kid I kid, lots of people do great with the DA codex. Lots of people do not do good with the DA codex as well.

Welcome to the Rock, glad you have decidec to stick with us. These guys are great, so any time you have a question just ask, it will get answered eventually, just be patient a bit.
