Chaos scouts?

Recommended Posts

It differs very much from legion to legion but as a general rule.... No CSM are not scouts before becoming CSM.

Recruiting for most chaos legions is much different then your index astartes chapter. It is more or less traitors that convert over or geneseed stolen that creates new chaos space marines. That is why theoretically there really arent as many as you would be lead to believe. Most "chapters" who were involved in the horus herasy would be sitting on dwindling numbers from sheer battles.

There are Cultist that used to be sort of like the chaos version of a scout. Low to no armor with infiltrate and the ability to take several different special weapons.

Before becoming a full marine do chaos initiates become scouts? If not, what role do they play? Does it differ from legion to legion?

The Horus Heresey books about the Dark Angels seemed to suggest that they trained them up on Caliban and as soon as they had done the required training they were sent off in power armour to join the crusade. I would imagine those chaos forces who activly recruit normal humans might work along the same lines.

Why would they need to steal geneseed, why not just take it from the own dead marines and since chaos marine frequently capture slaves couldn't they just breed more people to become marines? I can see legions like the world eaters who split into many warbands dwindling but would more organised ones like the black legion or iron warriors still be strong?

The gene-seed is mutated and degenerated in most of the traitor legions and as such is unsuitable for creating new astartes.

The legions would still collect the Gene-seed from their fallen, most of the time. But unlike the loyalists they can't rely on the reserves collected by the mecanicum. So any losses of gene-seed they sustain can't be covered by a back up supply.

Legions like the Night Lords (some night lords at least) have issues with using corrupt gene-seed and so are dwindling at a steady rate. :(
