deathwing transport

Land Raider Crusader allows the Deathwing to assualt into cover without going to initiative 1. Granted it doesn't have the AV14 weapons as the normal land raider, but it still has the MMelta. It works out well for me. I was able to take a 5 man thunderwolf cav, with two lords out with the heavy volume of fire from the LRC and an assualt from 1xStrmBltr/pwrswd, 2x LC, 1xThndrhmr/SS, and a heavy flamer/pwrfist. It just matters at how you use it.

quite freakishly that is the exact same setup i use. would you say then that the lrc is a better choice for deathwing and leave the standard lr to other transport/weapon platforms?

I also use the LRC with beliel, Int Cappie w/combi-melta, 2 LC(one has a cyclone), 2 TH/SS, Sarge, carring the company banner. This works out well, because it give a slight ability to be shooty when needed to soften up for the assualt. Also when assualting it a allows for re-rolls all hits with the cappie and gives an extra attack with the banner. So in CC you are looking at 32 attacks from this unit. Thats why i like it

I still use the standard LR for AV14 but its hard to use in games less then 2000 points

In my opinion it completely depends on the role of the Deathwing squad in question. In my 2000 point Triple Land Raider list, I run 2 land Raiders and 1 Crusader. The Deathwing squads riding in the Land Raiders are equipped with Cyclones to match the range of their transport. Their job is to hold objectives on my side of the table.

Belial and his command squad run forward in the Crusader, usually with an assault cannon in the squad, though sometimes I use the Heavy Flamer. They get supported by Dreadnoughts and thinks pretty much play themselves out from there. Against modern marine armies, things can get dicey very fast, with all the lascannon spam on razorbacks in MSU and storm shields in the occasional rock army.

Against those opponents, I will typically pull a draw. Mech Guard are the worst matchup, as they have enough firepower and bodies to completely overwhelm the elite force. Proper use of terrain and playing like a brillaint general will net you a draw about 45% of the time there.

Against Xenos, I tend to eek out the wins through the basic durability of the land raider. They have it about as rough as we do vs the modern armies. Tyranids are probably the best matchup for this list. A properly built Tyranid list will bring very few zoanthropes, and will use tyrannofexes for fire support. The mech deathwing can hit them very hard both in range and close combat, and the proper use of smoke and terrain will make the fight pretty easy.

So the real question is, what role are the Deathwing performing, and how does the rest of your list stack up? There should always be more than one angle to consider when choosing an option for your army.
