crazychib
Hi Since FW are meant to be releasing brass etched symbols for the Salamanders, I was wondering if anybody here has used any brass symbols on their marines. If so, are they easy to use (bend and glue onto shoulder pads etc.)? I was going to attemptt freehand painting the Salamander badges on as I find the decals are a pain in the butt to use. But, if the brass symbols are easier to use, I'll be purchasing a few sheets on release. Thanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/209272-fw-brass-etched-symbols/ Share on other sites
fudblinker
I have the ultramarines etched brass. I've found it to be easy to use and bend. Of course I've only used it on metal models so far (old dread and old scouts). The method I've found easiest for shaping the chapter symbol for my scouts was to press it to the shoulder pad and use the handle from one of my small metal files to roll over the brass piece, this helps to give a gradual bend without a crease. Race Bannon
RISE FROM THE DEAD!!! I used the searchy and looked on page 1 for similar results - please don't ban me for not making a new thread! SO - I bought some FW brass, specifically the small Imperial eagle sheet ... How do you make a clean cut? I mean, using a knife or clippers I tend to get some "flash". Due to the small size filing them down is a bit frustrating. Any tips to cut brass? Seahawk
Knife it as close as possible to the symbol's edge, and make sure to do it on a very solid surface (wood, rock); anything that has any give could bend the symbol and give you a poor cut. Doing this I've gotten rid of all flash in my trimming now. When that fails, you can still use the blade to get rid of excess. I don't have any pictures handy, but you can put the blade parallel to the edge and trim it off that way. Trying to do it at a perpendicular angle might usually also result in unwanted bending. I've used a lot of brass etch stuff :). Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/209272-fw-brass-etched-symbols/#findComment-2690845 Share on other sites
Valkyrion
I've used brass etch and the main thing I noticed was that it bonds to superglue instantly, even the fairly naff GW glue, so you have to be spot on with your placements lest you end up with cockeyed numbers and symbols. chromedog
Clip as close to the edge as you can and then FILE or sand back the little nub that is left. Brass isn't that hard a metal, and even an emery nail board can do the job. They shape to curves easily enough with a little pressure. Try to sand the 'backs' of them lightly before gluing as well (do this before shaping, it's easier).
