I have a friend and every time i see him he starts this debate with me. Did the DA, ever have an axe in their imagry? I think that the sword that the Deathwing's symbol is Jonsons' sword that broke in the battle (hence till the sword is reforged), but my friend (with a lot o french a few occasions) says i'm wrong and that Deathwings symbol was an axe and i'm crazy. Please settle this for me, (even though he still won't belive me after reading this, i just want a nail in the coffin.)
as far as i am aware before th deathwing we the deathing they used the same symbol as every other dark angel then when they became the deathwing they took on the current symbol. i could be wrong but i'm pretty sure there has never been an axe in deathwing imagery

If the Legion had all succumbed to Chaos, then maybe an axe would make sense. As others have already stated, the sword is what it always has been.

Would some of the Fallen also use the sword as their marking? Sounds interesting.

I have been in this hobby a fair old while now and I have never seen an axe used to denote the Deathwing. Always a sword. Maybe (as was suggested above) it was an army badge. But back when the original Deathwing-specific terminators were released they had a winged skull as their army badge and sword for the Chapter heraldry.

Hmm, I wonder if he's thinking of the personal heraldry of the Plains World terminators? One of those might have included an axe and the Librarian carried a force axe I believe.
