Liber regret..

Anyone else who only has DIY Chapter marines ever regret not being part of a 'cannon' chapter?

While I love my colour scheme and really like my fluff, sometimes I would like to be part of the 'official' universe.

In fact I even bought Codex: Dark Angels with a mind to start a DW army but decided to make it the 1st company of my Shades of Corax because the Deathwing is UGLY.

Anyone else ever think like this and consider throwing in their chapter for a 'normal' chapter?

The only thing I miss about not being a canon chapter is the ability to discuss my chapter in depth with other players, however, here at Liber at the get a pretty good service as long as I return the favour and discuss other people's chapters. But, being able to paint the models how I like, character the lists to my taste and view my chapter as my own overcomes all this :D

Not in the slightest.

40k Does not just belong to GW. While in the eyes of the law it owns the IP and everything associated with it, the universe and background is home to so many peoples imagination and fantasy that the term 'canon' becomes relatively redundant.

The way I see it is this: GW Lays down the ground rules and gives you the tools to create your own version of the 40k universe. In so doing, those initial rules, guidelines and even the limitations make it a more convincing universe to share with other people.

You may hear in Liber the term 'shared universe' bandied about here and there and to me this is the essential strength and saving grace of Warhammer 40k. The resin and plastic minis and everything else can be thrown out the window at the end of the day, or used in a different rule system. It's the background and the universe that everything takes place in that makes 40k what it is, or more importantly, that's what it means to me.

Making up my chapters is the thing that got me into 40k, so I can't really say I regret much in that regard.

And also since they're my chapters, that means no-one can argue with me about trivial details like "since when did that guy have a hammer?" ;)

Also I like the idea that the official chapters are the ones that get all the duties that include milling about in front of the cameras while my boys can get on with purging and the like.

Funnily enough I have refound the passion for my Liber Chapter.

While considering how the minis I own and list will run reflects on my Chapter, I have decided a bit of a rewrite of history is in order and I am happier with who they are and what they do than ever.

My 1500pt list features 10 man LOTD squad so I needed to work that into my chapters background somehow and the outcome pleases me.

I'll put up a rewrite on my Shades of Corax in the next day or two.

I've always been more of a create my own chapter/story/player character kind of person. Using one of the offical chapters would be uncomfortable, feeling the same to me as trying to play someone else's character in a tabletop rp game. Even if I haven't taken the time to fluff out my Iron Boots to the extent that some folk on this forum have gone, they will always feel more right to me than any official chapter I could pick. I could go into my dislike of other systems that limit character creation etc, but that would get a bit off topic, so ending rant now;).

My first army was going to be Blood Ravens...but after priming them black I decided to make the "Shadow Guard" as a Iron Hand colour rip-off with Black Templar rules. Then the shoulder guards went full silver, I learned of the Unforgiven and my "Angels of Shadow" evolved. Then my Daemonhunters' Inquisitor started to appear in my fan-fic...then I made some Chaos Traitors which were former 8th company...the Unforgiven, the Traitors and the Inquisition...

Nope, I don't regret it at all. I've been running with my Lords of Oblivion for just under eight years now. I've posted pictures, fluff, talked about them with tons of people, gotten pictures taken and questions asked at tournaments and stores I visit, and now complete strangers walk up to me and go, "Hey, are those the Lords of Oblivion?" once in a while. I have my own homegrown codex for them. As I plan on making a career out of writing, I would love to write for the BL some day. So no, I don't regret my Lords of Oblivion not being canon, because that's only a temporary situation until I make them canon. :P

I don't regret making the chapter, but it would be nice to replace those chapters that have almost nothing with chapters who have complete IAs and ITs in official GW fluff.

Can you imagine? I could see it now, the Wraiths of Darkness, the mercenaries who don't follow Chaos, who fight the endless war to earn their untouchability... They balance on the edge of extinction and infamy, earning a dread reputation while hiding their weakness. The Wraiths of Darkness... I could see forces of them now...

The great thing about them is that they are bought as support, so that you could collect any other Chaos force and still integrate Wraiths into it. You could even have Chaos Wraiths, although they were a relatively brief period [in the warband's fluff], they were still there...

'shakes head'

Alas, it will never be. ;)

Alas, it will never be.

With an attitude like that it certainly won't.

Don't defeat yourself before you're even out of the gate. Whether they will or won't ever be official canon is not for you to know at this stage.

At this moment you should be focused on how you can improve and work on your chapter. Whatever comes as a consequence of that is something else entirely.

The past and future can go take a short walk off of a long drop. It's what you're doing here and now that counts.

True. And that's what I'm doing, non? :woot:

If I do end up working at GW, though, one of the main things I want to do is get rid of all those minichapters that I mentioned above and replace some of them with actual IAs - a lot of the stuff that is used on Ultramarines would be replaced with chapters like the Blazing Sons. Not that anything is wrong with UM, but I would like to reward those who did do their best and created a Librarium worthy IA/IT.

Yes! My plan to get the Sons into official work by insidious means by way of a planted agent in GW's ranks is finally working! :)

Yes it is what you're doing now. What I mean is don't put the end goal up on too much of a pedestal. Yes have a plan but the more focus and effort you put into what you're doing here, in this moment is what will truly carry you forward.

But I shall pontificate no longer. ;)

I feel regret about my Chapter after running out of creative steam

Same here to be honest. I can make the models and enjoy the colours (much to Octavlug's... distaste :)) but fluff-wise yeah it falls down too many stairs. However I'm not regretting choosing a canon Chapter; If I found one I liked I woulnd't be on here so much now would I? ;)

With the sheer amount of half baked/in production/in hibernation DIY chapters I have, I do feel the regret of leaving them by the wayside for however long. Although I hope to emulate them with my "Operation Reclamation" to paint up the chapters I've posted here with a single miniature, so they can still exist no matter what.
