Crusade-era Iron Hands

Greetings denizens of the bolter.

My non-marine armies here haven't been that well received, so I thought I'd wait until I got my teeth back into some power armour before braving the pit again.

I have slowly amassed a selection of models and parts to begin constructing my primary Crusade-era Astartes Legion, X - the Iron Hands.

With the arrival of Mk II and Mk III armour from Forgeworld, I feel there's sufficient resources to get them underway once the final Age of the Emperor campaign ends. I hope to return my focus to both pre-Heresy and Astartes.

As I've sold my soul to the Omnissiah, my choice in the Iron Hands is clearly influenced by time spent building my Mechanicus forces. It makes sense to work on a related legion, combining efforts and models on the tabletop as well as the worktop.

I plan to make all the models from a single clan, though I'm not sure if the clan names have been assigned to the selection of icons. This is my chosen icon:

The force will be mostly Mk II-IV armour, with a preference for Mk II. I am actually making use of FW Death Guard models to bridge the gap and offer some truly depraved models that have fallen to the machine-obsession. The choice of icon also lets me get creative with any Nurgle symbols I have to clear.

As for paint scheme, I am opting for rev's metal scheme - highlighting edges with mithril rather than going for a blue hue.

As for army composition, I hope to use Codex: Space Wolves in order to make use of Terminator-armoured sergeants, lots of Dreadnoughts and a proxy Bjorn as HQ.

Here's a shot of the build and assembled pieces:

I didn't take staged pics of the painint as I wanted to make sure I liked the end piece. I'll do a full tutorial to log this later.

I hope you like my slightly controversial use of parts! I need to do some mor work on the base, it's just washed sand for now. I'd also like to get some blue into the armour via washes and inks to give the metal a more clean tint.

These are good mate, the mix of bits is brilliant! can Imagine the FWDG parts need a fair old bit of cleaning up though! Painting is good as well, the silver highlights work ell, although the eye lenses could be a little more red, but thats just personal preference more than anything!

S.O.N.

I'm sorry, I'm just trying to figure out the "why" on the use of Death Guard icons. . . .

I'm with you on this one, they scream Death Guard regardless of the clan icon...

At least remove the Nurgles Rot that is on the pad! ;)

i understand the somewhat similar make up of the death guard and particular clan icons but maybe try to cog out the circle around the skulls to represent it more.

also from my understanding is from reading the books that describe this legion they are on par with perfection to the utmost like the emperors children though in a much more mechanical way. so that being said i think the breaks in tubing, cracks in the metal and nurgles rot left on the models is in my eyes out of place. battle damage is one thing but the look of dis repair is another which seems unlike an astartes marine in any legion.

i do think though that using the death guard models as a base is great because of the extra tubes and wires which are hard to create on small areas. i think filling in some of the majorly cleaved areas on the armor and connecting the cables and tubing would help out with the normally understood look of the legion's marines. also im a fan of them all having at least the one cybernetic hand replacement that all of the legions marines are described as having.

the horus heresy book "fulgrim" describes this legion the best and if you havent read it i would because it gives more information about this legion than anywhere i can find on the internet.
