Big Vanguard Squads

Recommended Posts

Hey lads, earlier today i was having a chat with one of the Wolves on here about my latest list: LIST and he brought up the fact that at the moment I dont have much which can destroy termie squads be it Assault or Tactical by shooting or in assault other than swarming them which would leave me more vulnerable to attack somewhere else so i was thinking of dropping the 220 point honour guard to get more bodies and toys into my vanguard for a good CC unit.

Your thoughts on this?

I would lose the lightning claws on the priests and instead focus on getting some power weapons into your vanguard. Sanguinary priests dont' need to be that kitted out. They have one wound and are going to be high risk targets for assassination. Other than that I think you're pretty straight.

I used to use a large Vanguard squad. But it didn't seem worth it as there was rarely any targets worth HIing with a real expensive unit.

So I used it as a VAS to protect my Reclusiarch, but in the end just using an RAS and a Priest proved cheaper and almost as useful.

They honestly are a good bit overcosted when you think about it.

They're 55 pts more expensive (with jump packs) than a regular assault squad. I guess, since you have to pay for them, not getting them jump packs includes the 35 pt reduction for a transport if you opt not to use jump packs.

What do these points get you? Some superior weapon options, +1 A/marine, and heroic intervention.

I still want to try them out though. My current personal rule is to never kit out more than 5 marines with something special. So if I get a squad to 8 men only 5 of them will have something cool. E.g.: Sarge w/ thunder hammer, vet w/ storm shield, and 3xvets w/ power weapons.

Also, if you're looking for anti-Terminator work, HI may go to waste. Terminators, in my experience, are usually delivered via Land-Raider or Teleportation, and are usually too vulnerable to ranged fire unless they have some delivery method.

Vanguard Vets seem more adept at killing things that are entrenched in the back field, or high profile highly guarded targets.

That seems like sound advice to me. My current idea is to use a drop pod w/ locator beacon on turn one to deliver some sternguard. The sternguard will hold the line until the vanguard can arrive. The sternguard may get charged in the process which will only be even better for my vanguard as the enemy will be even more disorganized. Sound like a good idea?

the priests have been working well for me so far even when they're 100 pts each with strategic placement. The idea for the vanguard would be to HI and destroy some unit then work their way back towards the rest of the army or if i run a 10 man they could CS
I'm trying out a 10-man vet squad tomorrow. I went up to 10 so I could combat squad it if required. Not sure how I'm going to break it down if I do combat squad it. I'll be running the squad as follows with 2 inferno pistols, 2 fists, 2 power weapons and one set of claws. The lightning claws are just there because I built the model a long time ago and never got around to using him before.
