PMT's "Dragonsons"

Recommended Posts

What I'd be inclined to call a LONG time ago, I posted pics of a squad of Salamanders tactical marines. That, in and of itself, does not say a lot, so I might as well post up some pics. It also gives me an opportunity to finally take a few updated pics of the army as it stands.

So far, it's painted to 500 points. 10-man Tactical Squad with a missile launcher and a flamer, and a second 5-man Tactical Squad. One Master of The Forge, and his companion Dreadnought.

10 Tactical marines, affectionately called "squad 1"

It's been a while since they've been played. As if the dust didn't tell you that already.

Some still need a couple things. Highlights on the black bits, and I missed the missile launcher marine's name scroll.

No baldies in my army either. Taking off your helmet is a bad idea, no matter who you are or how experienced you may be. SGT's have black helmets.

Last 5 tac marines. I'm considering doing a few magnetized arms for my SGTs in case I wanna do a different loadout. I like this scheme so maybe I'll just paint whole new models for different kits.

Sloppily painted master of the forge. He got a little too caked with wash and so lost a lot of detail. The red stuff need to be redone as well. maybe just a 50/50 - blood red/blazing orange highlight would give it that hard edge the rest of the models have. I'm also shopping around for a decent base to put him on. Some sort of 40mm scenic base that looks like the bases that dreadnoughts come on. If someone wants to suggest something, I'd gladly have a look.

My nameless dreadnought. I want to name this (the first) dreadnought after my dad who died at the end of may, but "Warren" isn't very Salamanderish. I was thinking something to do with war, like "Warheart" or similar, but I'm not sure yet. I'll think more on it later.

And finally a pic of the whole army.

I'm expanding this army all the way up to 1850 points. Here's the list of units:

  • Vulkan
  • Master of The Forge
  • Dreadnought w/ Multi-Melta + DCCW /w Heavy Flamer
  • Dreadnought w/ Multi-Melta + DCCW /w Heavy Flamer
  • Dreadnought w/ Plasma Cannon + Missle Launcher
  • Dreadnought w/ Plasma Cannon + Missle Launcher
  • Dreadnought w/ Plasma Cannon + Missle Launcher
  • 10 Tactical Marines
  • 10 Tactical Marines
  • 10 Tactical Marines
  • 10 Sternguard Veterans with Combi-Meltas
  • Drop Pod
  • Drop Pod
  • Drop Pod
  • Drop Pod
  • Drop Pod

At 1850 the units are damn near naked, and I'm still humming and hawing at going with Ironclads and just counting them as regular dreads for smaller games or something. Still not 100% on this though, since I already have 2 black reach dreads waiting for paint right now.

The first addition to the 500 point list is gonna be...

*drum roll*

A drop pod!

It's about this far right now. I still have a lot of boltgun to highlight. Once the boltgun is finished I can paint the flames, and add the final touches, then the doors and base will get painted. The trick is that the metal paints rub off the model if you overhandle them, and this is a very easy thing to do with such a large model, so painting is very slow going.

That's all for now. I'll try to keep this log updated as often as possible.

Post up some C&C. Any ideas for improving the look of the army would be killer.

Thanks for looking!

looking pretty sharp, dargonforge (http://www.dragonforge.com/Painting%20service/for%20sale/gaming_bases.htm) do some pretty sweet scenic bases, might be something there that'll fit the MOTF.

With regards the army list though, you can definitely save a few points by dropping some of the combi meltas on your sternguard, no armour will EVER require 10 twin linked meltagun shots to kill it, EVER. That said, you may not need so save the points, give every tac squad a flamer and multimelta for the big old price of free and weep with twin linked joy!

Dragonforge's slate looking bases look okay for what i wanna do. I'd like something a little closer to the dreadnought's thing. But it's not a huge priority right now.

The idea with the sternguard is to combat squad them after they get out of the drop pod (yes, AFTER) and take out two targets, or possibly one, depending on if it survived the first 5 meltas. They're a big giant drop podding swiss army knife. they can pop a transport and then deep fry the occupants, or all band together and drop a hive tyrant in one round of shooting. I love them. it's REALLY hard to fit 10 into an 1850 list and still have 3 tac squads and 5 dreadnoughts. Might have to drop back to 9 sterns as originally planned in order to fit missiles/heavy flamers on my dreads.

Very nice work so far! I really like the harsh highlighting, it somehow looks... right.

I could see Salamanders (or their successors) have a name like Wa'ren or War'en or something.

It's always been my style to put a very hard edge on my artwork. I usually ink anything I draw with hard lines, and my models are no exception. In some places where it shouldn't work, the metallics catch the light, and hide the "off" spots and sorta highlight themselves. Sort of how using gloss varnish on black or white gives it that look. The drop pod is really taking that look to the extreme, though. LOTS and LOTS of hard edges and corners. It's making painting it one hell of a job, but it's getting done, slowly. I'm almost done mythril highlights on the "fins" section, then its just touch ups and painting the flames to complete that half of the drop pod. It really feels nice to think that I'm getting close to a turning point in a REALLY big model's completion.

Way too much work for 35 points ^_^

Necrobumpage!!!

Started 5 more tac marines and vulkan (for when I'm waiting for washes to dry). I got most of his cloak done (from the back, no work on the front yet).

Really nice work on those Sallies, the flames are badass. I like how your commemorating your dad with your hobby that's cool IMHO, I second the watchman name.

Keep up the great work.

Your fire is amazing, trying to emulate it now.

It's REALLY simple. it's just 3 layers. blood red, blazing orange and [sunburst?] yellow. whichever yellow is more orangey than the other. No fancy blending or anything like that. It's pretty much all in getting the shape of he flames just right. Best of luck!

These guys look cracking mate, very nice indeed. as for the Dreadnought's name, the Sallies nameing convention would make something like War'ren Flamefist (or whatever) work well. eg Bray'arth Ashmantle or Pellas Mir'san from Badab 2

Is it possible to have a couple of close ups of some shoulder pads? having some issues getting the shape of your flames right.

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk244/PirateMetalTroy/Dragonsons%20-%20Salamanders/IMG_0238.jpg

Does that help? Maybe just save it and zoom in a bit. Start with red, then add your orange so you can still see the red outline, then put yellow on the top in the same manner...yellow can be tough to get the right coverage though. That's all it is.

Perfect, coverage for yellow isn't too much of an issue for me as i'm lucky enough to still have a pot of orc brown from the original citidel range and I use that as a base before finishing with bad moon yellow( again from the old range). It was the shape of the flames that was wrecking my head but thats a nice angle, thanks.

try cutting off the top fire part of power pack, and rotating in the direction of mantle flow. just so Vulkan's not looking static with the cross wind factor ;) but besides that your silver nmm looks excellent.

Oh, yeah I see what you're on about there. I don't see a really clean way to cut it off without making something else look bad, though. It doesn't make sense why the fire goes one way and the cloak goes another...Also, that cloak's not meant to be NMM. Just grey. Might look like that cuz of the pics, but it's really just meant to be highlighted grey scales.
