Color Scheme Question

I've decided to go with a Lost Company, and as I'm not a huge fan of the gray armor with yellow pauldrons look, I was planning on going with (dark) gray and red, possibly even trying to duplicate the scheme on the cover of the codex with burnished gold trim. However, I feel like I've seen more gray and red color schemes than gray and yellow ones in looking through various galleries and fora; is that like the 13th Co. color scheme or something? I run across it a LOT, and here I thought I was being all original.

I've seen 13th Co. painted gray and red more often than not as well. On Lexicanum the painted miniature is gray and red, so its a safe paint job if you're going for a fluff. In my opinion paint them as epic as you would like, they're your models after all.

I too am doing a lost company with that scheme. I believe it was the PH scheme, and then it slowly faded out as the blue-grey came in. Also, the Wolf Lords own heraldry depends on the colors alot too. Whereas Ragnar and his boys have the blue/grey and yellow, another wolf lord might have blue/grey and black with a silver trim, etc etc...

And like Zynk said, they are your models, paint em as you want em. :o Good luck, and please post pics of your models for all of us to enjoy!

If darker gray and red is the pre-Heresy scheme, even better.

Long before I decided on a Lost Company I ran up a test model for a vanilla DIY that was dark gray - Charadon Granite, to be precise - with Fenris Gray pauldrons, and it looked quite awesome, not to mention that I hadn't seen it anywhere. However, I just didn't feel like it was Space Wolfy enough.

Yeah, I am actually about to start my scheme tonight and mess around with it. I will post pics if you want when I get a "feel" for it.

The Space Wolves do not have a different pre-Heresy and post-Heresy scheme like the Dark Angels. The have always been described in the fluff as having "wolf-grey armour". The only thing that has changed over time is the interpretation by GW artists and the 'Eavy Metal team as to what "wolf-grey" ought to look like. Prior to 1994, all Space Wolves painted by GW used the darker grey color. With the release of the 2nd Edition code , the new studio army was painted with the blue-grey, which has stuck with new studio models. When the 13th Company models were released for the Eye of Terror campaign, the artist used a darker gray again; whether he wanted to do them "retro", or just wanted to ensure the scheme wouldn't clash with the looted Chaos Space Marine parts, I do not know for sure.

Good info, thanks.

I have no idea how reliable the Lexicanum is, but it only lists gray under SW colors, and states, "The Space Wolves wear blue-grey coloured armour with other colours as highlights, notably red, yellow, black and white, and often adorned with tokens taken from wolves, such as furs and teeth."

Is that reliable? Hardly seems like it, as other than the dark gray/red Thirteenth Co. stuff, every "traditional" SW army I've seen goes with at least a yellow left pauldron.

yellow is often used because it adds warmth to an otherwse cold colour schme. Plus raganr's is the most oft painted company and so people kind of assume yellow + grey = SW.

However you can paint the shoulder pads any colour you wish, Grimnar's company have black pads, others according to the new dex have red, white, grey etc.

I play Bjorn Stormwolf's compay and my models have yellow pads but only because the scheme was too cold otherwise and I felt it added much needed contrast.

So paint the pads whatever colour you feel works best and no SW will tell you you are wrong.

Please do, I'd like to see it.

If it's similar to mine, though, I'll have to figure something else out. Trying to get a unique color scheme is probably a lost cause, but I enjoy tilting at windmills. :)

Dont worry if they are similar bro. You paint your guys however you want :P
