I think he is worth the points! Think about it - on the charge or while charged if he passes Leadership he gets 5 attacks at I1 but S10. He always hits on 3's no matter the Weapon Skill of his target AND rerolls that against IC's and Monstrous Creatures. That's amazing! A Swarmlord reduces you to W1? Whatever, you'll still smash him, because he won't be able to target you since you are not an Independent Character! Also you can allocate wounds that would instakill the rest of your unit without fear of him dieing - Powerklaws, Thunder Hammers? He gets a 3+ Inv save thanks to his Storm Shield and even if that goes through he has a 2nd wound AND Eternal Warrior. Stick that bad boy in a LR or a Drop Pod and use him to hunt down and kill the biggest and nastiest thing your opponent has. It really does not matter what squad you stick him in. Personally, I prefer a Grey Hunter squad with a Battle Standard - let him rerolls those nasty 1's to wound.

Not gonna even mention his 6'' S10 AP1 hammer that hits on 2+...

Yes, he is a BEAST for his points. A Wolf Guard Battle Leader kitted out (illegally) with Terminator Armour, Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield and Saga of the Bear is 185 Points. Arjac is 188.

For 3 extra points you get +1 Strength, the ability to THROW YOUR GOD DAMN HAMMER AT THE ENEMY, Stubborn, lose the independent character rule and have the ability to re-roll all to hit rolls against Independent Characters and Monstrous Creatures... oh and your Storm Shield gives you an extra attack in the first round of Combat.

Edit:

And I generally throw him in a Land Raider with a Terminator Squad, helps to get there and the frags are awesome.

Either method has its advantages and drawbacks.

I like the cheap Drop Pod method, however if you want him to be more than a large speed bump plan to have at least 1 support drop with him. I like the 3 pod list that allows 2 pods to come in on turn 1 followed by 1 more pod and a wolf scout unit in reserve. You should have a fairly aggressive mech force or fast units such as a lord on a TWM to secure the foot hold. If your opponent starts in reserve, have don't drop him on turn 1 rather keep him in reserve and wait for that target of opportunity to show itself.

If you do want to go with a Land Raider, consider the LRC with EA and MM. I don't recommend this for any list less than 2k. This unit will be a top priority of your opponent and thus should have the most protection you can afford to put toward it. A RP inside casting Storm Caller is not a bad idea just keep embarked when Arjac goes off to engage with the enemy. The advantage is you can have a 10 man GH unit with 2 MG and a cheaper HQ choice such as a RP or WP supporting him and a surgical strike team that is able to go anywhere on the table.

Good Luck.

Vrox.

Arjac is hands down my favorite and to date most usefull character. Except for the first game I used him in and DP'd him right in the middle of 3 squads of Necron Warriors (shot to death); Arjac has been amazing. Easily making 2x his points back. For me, he's in every list 750pts and up.

Anyway, back on topic...

While Arjac might not be the most cost effective choice in our codex he can most certainly add a lot any army list. In my list he plays the part of an independant character who leads a ten-man pack of Grey Hunters, without actually being an IC. This means that he cannot be picked out in CC. Just think of him as a really good IC, not just another Wolf Guard.

I don't even mind his price. Even if I roll / play badly he always makes his points + more back. I'm a big fan of slaping him with a 10man assault kitted GH pack and if points allow a Wolf Priest. Lots of re-rolls and the standard for the 1's.

GH x10

Motw, Power Weapon, Melta gunx2, standard

Arjac

On the Charge / Counter

24 regular attacks

3 Power Weapon attacks

2-6 Motw attacks

5 St10 hammer attacks

With correct possitioning you even get the 8 pistol, 2 melta, and 1 Hammer shots before charging. Hard to not like that pack. :)
