WIP Mk V(ish) Assault Marine

Recommended Posts

Inspired by Lestat's idea to use his bank holiday to try something I decided to do the same. I've been drooling over the armour variant sets that FW have released since the photos first appeared and they really put me in the mood to try something heresy era. So after a brainstorm session with my brother this morning this is what I came up with:

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/DSCF8859.jpghttp://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/DSCF8860.jpghttp://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/DSCF8861.jpg

Everything's blu-tacked just now as there's still a little more work to be done. I want him to appear hunched forward so a little more of his belt needs filing away on the right hand side. I'm also thinking about swapping out the regular jump pack for a single thruster one to add to the older look. Finally I'm going to have a go at sculpting some power cables on his thigh plates to add more Mk V ness to him. I've just got some brass etch from FW as well for use in a different project so I might try using one for his chapter marking to get more used to working with the stuff.

I might try and add something to his base for him to be crouched on as well to give him more of a predator ready to strike kinda look.

Any comments or criticism appreciated as usual,

thanks

James

Glad I provided some inspiration!

Thats a nice, simple kitbash. It looks like he's taking cover from heavy enemy firepower.

Maxmini do some nice Heresy influenced bits. Heres a link to some jumppacks that would look good.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Arenis, the chainsword is from the Death Company kit. The new BA frames have so many potential uses B). As for the helmet, it's a cool idea but against all rules of common sense and battlefield protocol I like my display mini's to have bare heads to allow me to show a bit more emotion in them. As good as he'd look with a mk v helmet, I think the grim set look on his face adds more character.

Lestat, thanks for the link to maxi-mini. I was aware of some of the stuff they do, but didn't know about the jump packs. Unfortunately I don't have that much spare cash just now plus I kinda want to try and do this with just what I've already got. They are very nice though and are going on my list of things to buy when the kids are a bit older and we have more disposable income :D.

A few more photos of some of the work I did tonight. After trying to work out the best way to add power cables to his thighs, I thought I'd try this:

http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/DSCF8868.jpghttp://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/DSCF8866.jpghttp://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/DSCF8865.jpg

The greenstuff needs a bit of a tidy up once it's cured but I think it works reasonably well as it ties in to the additional power cables on his torso, however I'd like to know what others think of it....

Oh and once I've finished working on his legs the rock under his knee will be blended into the base with some fine slate chips to cover up the huge gap that's there just now.

I also put cleaned up and put together a Sanguinary Guard jum pack for him tonight so I can put up some comparison pictures once I get his arms in place.

thanks

James

Thanks mate. I did think about doing that but couldn't think of a way to do i without destroying the rest of the legs. I think the crudeness might actually add some character to him in a sort of cobbled together from what the techmarines had lying around kinda way :D. Well, I hope it will....

I also had a crazy idea for making a Heresy era jump pack last night but it needs more thought and some experimentation before I hack up the jump pack I've got. Let's just say it involves some Drop Pod retros and a mark VI back pack....

cheers

Looking good James - the thigh cabling is a nice touch.

The only way I can think of recessing them would be to very carefully dremel out the area on the thigh you want to place the cables. If you drill a series of very small holes in a line, then set about opening them out so they join together, you should get a nicely recessed groove.

That's what I did, didn't make a series of holes, but that's a good idea. I just dremeled grooves along his legs.

I've had an idea for a squad of mk V marines which with a little more planning will actually get done at some point. However they'll be done using the FW kit. For this mini I'm going to stick with what I've done already. NOt to say that I don't appreciate the adivce you've shared but unfortunately I don't have access to a dremel just now :(.

After some consideration while I was at work tonight I tacked the mini back togheter slightly differently and wouldn't mind some opinions on his new look:http://i347.photobucket.com/albums/p456/pigofsparta/mkVassaultmarine.jpg

After some playing with components this morning I realised that my idea for a PH jump pack wasn't doable as the diameter of the drop pod retros is a lot bigger than i remembered. So I thought I'd try the single thruster junp pack instead :).

cheers

Thanks guys. I think I might stick with this one as his base is pretty loaded with wreckage already. I've begun thinking about how I might paint him and have a couple of ideas, but first I wanted to try to establish which Legions during the HH would actually have used mk V armour.

As far as I can see most of the traitor legions would have, but of the loyalists, I can only really see the Imperial Fists, Blood Angels and White Scars having worn it due to their proximity to terra and mars as well as the protracted fighting they took part in.

The Raven Guard, Salamanders and Iron Hands were devastated and marginalised at the start of the heresy and so I can't see them needing using mk V suits. Similarly with the Ultramarines, Dark Angels and Space Wolves while they were embroiled in battles across the galaxy, I don't think they were involved in such desperate fights as those present within the solar system, but I might be wrong.....

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated :tu:

thanks

James

Yeah the Fists, White Scars and Blood Angels would have had access to Mark 5. You can also paint him as one of the Traitor Legions: Sons of Horus, Emperors Children, Death Guard, Iron Warriors, World Eaters, Thousand Sons (they were at the siege I think). The Traitors captured the forges on Mars so they would all likely have access.
