Eggroll's Blood Angels

Alright, so I've been a long time lurker here at the forums and figured I might start my own WIP log of a Blood Angels army I'm working on. Got some WIP pictures as well as some finished pictures but my guess is that I'm about 10% complete for my total force, at least the ones I've bought so far.

Completed:

1 Vindicator

2 Tactical Squads

1 Lemartes

To Assemble/Paint:

1 Furioso Dreadnought

1 Librarian Dreadnought

1 Drop Pod

2 Rhinos

1 Razorback

1 Baal Predator

2 Vindicators

10 Man Death Company

10 Man Sanguinary Guards

2 Tactical Squads

2 Assault Squads

10 Man Devastators

1 Command Squad

1 Mephiston

I have no idea how many points this army is as I've never actually learned to play the game. Just wanted to collect and create a large blood angel army with a focus on painting. Also, I'm not a huge fan of the really bright red colour scheme GW gives the BA so I'm trying to make mine a bit more dark and gritty. I do pretty much all my basecoats with an airbrush and detail with a brush with the exception of individual units like HQs and Elites which I do by hand. Anyway, here are some pics of some WIP and completed units:

Heavy weapons for tac squad and sergeant. All my units are based with torn up cork board with GW basing sand on the rest of the surface.

I use Duplicolor Sandable Primer Rust colour for priming all my minis. Gives it a nice maroon red base to work from.

Airbrush WIP showing first layer of GW Red Gore base with GW Blood Red in highlights airbrushed on

Airbrush WIP showing shadows done using a 50/50 mix of Createx Opaque Black and Red

Airbrush WIP showing a red glaze on all models done using watered down GW Red Gore. I do this to tone down the orange-ish hue from the GW Blood Red

Next up, I need to finish off the drop pod, Mephiston and the heavy weapon units for the first two tactical squads.

Very nice looking army so far, cant wait for a update :P .

Haha yeah. I just used the book as a base so the model won't be sitting in the piles of plastic shavings that was currently covering my cutting mat.

Alright, quick update. Didn't do much tonight, spending some time to read that book the Vindicator was running over. Just a quick cut job for a Furioso dreadnought. Cut up two old dreads to make the two DCCW. In the picture I just finished filling in some uneven gaps with milliput and still have to file it out smooth tomorrow once it sets. Tried to mirror the arms as much as possible. Right arm was done using an assault cannon arm with lots of cut bits. Managed to line up the storm bolter directly under the ammo box so I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

Dropped the other arm in Simple Green and will have it stripped by tomorrow. Plan is to use both arms on an Ironclad Dreadnought body since I prefer the look of the heavy front plating on that model; suites a close combat dread more than the standard one. Got a Venerable Dread body coming from ebay soon which I'll turn into a Librarian dread later.

That plasma gun dude standing with the devastator squad, is he modeled to represent a "gets got" result? That pose just screams "OH GOD! NOT IN THE FACE!"

The "Not the face, NOT THE FACE!" appears often on other B&C army projects, everyone loves that pose.

Great work so far, keep it up :)

Shouldn't the Dreadnought have a meltagun under the right hand?

Other than that, fantastic use of spraygun.

I should try using mine some day, but I'm a little scared ... B)

Justicar Valius has the right idea. Basically the guy is sort of afraid of shooting the Plasma gun and is looking away and sheilding his face with his hand. I think in the game if you roll a 1, you take a would.

Yup you're right, the furioso should have a melta and storm bolter. I might rummage through my bitz box tonight and see if I can dig up a spare. As for being scared of using the spray guy, you'll never get good at it if you don't try. It took me about a month of playing around before I was fully comfortable with using my airbrush and compressor. I still have lots to learn though.

Worked on the drop pod since my last update and finished the details and weathering on the outside. Need to start on the interior this weekend.

I do like your BA's though :P I tried doing a test BA, but the colours didn't come out the way I wanted :P despite the fact I was using the WD with the BA painting guide in it.

That lemartes is awesome how did you do the black if I may be so bold ?

Black was pretty basic. I primed using Duplicolour Black Primer and then gave it a coat of Thamar Black (P3 Paint). I then did some gradual highlights using codex gray on raised areas such as the kneepad. It's very subtle and isn't easily noticeable.

Thanks. I have the same issue of WD and never follow their painting guides. They're usually horrible in actually guiding you through and as you mentioned, the paints they mention to use and what it shows in the photos are often inconsistent.

Really love these guys mate, drop pod is astounding and Lemartes rock with awesome! My only ilk is you melta gunnner taken in the light box. I'm not entirely sure what it is but he seems sorta 'pastely' or cartoony to me, I think it may just be the lack of contrast between recesses and raised areas though, especially on the face and shoulder's. But thats just me, keep up the great work.

@S. Bloodhowl - You're right, the lightbox does wash out some of the colours though it's probably because I haven't fully figured out all the right settings on my digicam yet.

@Kassill - Thanks!

Finally finished off Mephiston. I didn't like GW's colour scheme which gave him blonde hair. I didn't think the "Lord of Death" look dark and gothic enough with blonde hair so I kept it black. With long blonde hair, I half expected him to pull out a tub of margarine and say "I can't believe it's not butter!"

Anyway, here's some shots taken from my lightbox...

Here's another desk shot of mephiston with his buddy lemartes...

Mjelnir you can get a similar effect by painting the area you wish to be black with Adeptus Battlegrey then wash the area heavily with Badab black. if you lay it down properly, the wash will move away from the highest points of the model and leave some of the grey underneath showing.

More fantastic models! Good job!

Loving your work Eggroll - particuallry your darker take on the Blood Angels - what is it with all these bright and fluffy marines everywhere! They match my DA.

Just one thing - your work is great but I dont see much depth on the faces. A little shading on Mephiston's face for example might goa long way. ;)

Great work Eggroll! I am learning some airbrush technique and was wondering if you could clarify something for me - How are you shading with the airbrush? Are you masking every panel/section to do it, or is there some other technique involved?

Yes, you're right, I do need to bump up the contrast on the faces though at the moment, they do have more depth than what can be seen from the photos. Not sure why but a lot of the pictures are a bit flat and washed out. I'm going to have to play around with my camera to see if I can find an optimal setting.

Thanks. For shading I usually start with a 50/50 mix of black and red to do the shadows. This is done on a primer basecoat which is a darker red. Then I do the highlights with Blood Red and then airbrush the whole mini with a watered down mixture of createx opaque red to bring it all together. Only place I actually use masking is on the shoulder pads. I mask off the bottom "lip" of the shoulder so I can create a gradient from top to bottom while leaving the lip the normal red colour. Had to do it this way to give some contrast on the shoulders since the BA shoulders are all red in the fluff. That's about it. All the other work is done by hand which involves picking out the smaller details and doing the metallics.
