Eggroll's Blood Angels

Your work is inspirational to say the least. Every time you post an update I start building another Blood Angel marine. I then realize that mine will never look as good as yours and put them away. I don't know if this has been asked and answered before but have you considered doing some commission work? I for one would love to have at least a squad of marines painted by you and I can't be the only one thinking it either.

Thanks. There are painters out there that have work that make me feel the same way but the key is to work off that and stay motivated to always improve. Others have asked before regarding commission but unfortunately I don't do any. I have a full time job and will be starting my graduate studies on top of that in Sept. so I'm all full. Any of my free time for painting is just for that...painting. Also, commission painting will rarely bring in any decent money $/hr-wise so I'm going to be staying away from it.

Dude your work is bad-ass! Looks amazing and you seem to knock it out very quickly too!

Though one thing is sticking out to me, the green OSL on the eyes of some of the latest marines is projecting onto the surface above the eye. Wouldn't the ridge above the lens prevent the light bleeding onto the upper area and force the light to be reflected to the lower area under the eye?

Thanks. Yup you're right on the eye glow and I did consider it before I did the eye glows for the marines. Given the scale, sometimes you have to make some compromises on what looks good and what's realistic and I chose to do I thought would look better in this case and make the whole area glow.

Quick update: Been doing more work on my bikes this week and am almost finished. I need to finish the details on the bikes, do some more shading and then finish off the riders. I decided to take WIP pics of the progress:

Once again mate these are fantastic models. I especially love your libby terminator - how did you get such a vibrant blue colour?

Edemia

THanks. the blue is just done with regal blue, enchanted blue and ice blue layered on with the airbrush.

for the helms do you paint them separate or mask them off ?

Gonna give Air brushing a go this weekend.

Yup, if the helms are not red, I do them separately. Makes things a lot easier.

I wasn't sure about the bikes beforehand, not being a huge fan of the models, but seeing your work has shown me that with an awesome paintjob they can come out top notch. What you working on next?

Thanks Edemia...haven't decided what's next year...maybe some more tanks? Will see what strikes my mood.

Finished off the rest of the bike riders this afternoon. Managed to clear off my desk and get the whole army together for some pictures.

It's been a little over 1 year now since I decided to start collecting and painting blood angels. Still have plenty of models left to paint - 2 baal preds, 2 preds, 1 razorback, 1 land raider crusader/redeemer, scouts, vanguard/sternguard vets, 3+ squads of terminators, 1 stormraven, and a ton of other troops. By this time next year I doubt all the models will fit on my desk.

Took a surprisingly long time to get everything out of the display case and setup on the desk. I'm just glad I don't have to play with these guys as there are a ton of models now to setup. Anyway, here are the pics:

Words cannot describe how amazing your stuff is. Just wondering, if it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you do a step by step process of the highlighting/shadowing you do with your airbrush on a test model? Also, what paint do you use in your airbrush? Do you thin it out much? Thanks so much, like I said, beautiful army, just beautiful.

Thanks. I've done some basic step by step pictures throughout this painting log. Just check some of the earlier pics to see the individual stages. I also go over the paints I use and the dilution ration (50/50). I don't have any plans to do a whole tutorial as I generally skip between models with start to finish of a model or group sometimes taking a few weeks.

Thanks, the colours for the green power weapons is started on a black basecoat, then goblin green, then scorpion green, then 50/50 of scorpion green and sunburst yellow.

I have never seen so many Blood Angels! Are planning on doing the whole chapter? If carlsburg made Blood Angels they would'nt even come close to yours! Stunnig stuff

Thanks, I don't have plans for a whole chapter. I'm just collecting at least one of every model from the current range which means I have plenty left to paint. There's really no structure for my army other than I paint what I think looks cool and what GW/Forgeworld has released for it.

Great work Egg!! as always, 2 questions, how much Tamyia tape do you go through, and are your running a .2 needle or a .35? I have been thinking of getting a new brush that would take me down to a .2

Ashton

Thanks Ashton. I don't use Tamyia tape, I bought this roll blue 3M painters tape from the hardware store which half of it has been used. For my airbrush I do most of my work using the 0.3mm needle in the iwata revolution BR. 0.15 I've barely every used. 0.3 I find is good enough for smaller details and larger coats such as basecoating and AB primer.

°_° ..that's an amazing blending technique all around!

How you achieved the black of the DC dreddy?

What about the DC marines themselves?

Explain us your magic! ;)

Thanks, I think I described the paints I used in it a few pages back. Too lazy to check and memory a bit fuzzy ;) From what I recall, I used shadow grey AB on the black.
