Eggroll's Blood Angels

Thanks. For shading I usually start with a 50/50 mix of black and red to do the shadows. This is done on a primer basecoat which is a darker red. Then I do the highlights with Blood Red and then airbrush the whole mini with a watered down mixture of createx opaque red to bring it all together. Only place I actually use masking is on the shoulder pads. I mask off the bottom "lip" of the shoulder so I can create a gradient from top to bottom while leaving the lip the normal red colour. Had to do it this way to give some contrast on the shoulders since the BA shoulders are all red in the fluff. That's about it. All the other work is done by hand which involves picking out the smaller details and doing the metallics.

Awesome, So would i be right in saying that (in your first post) your third photo is actually a couple of painting steps after your fourth photo?

Actually in that group, I did highlights before shadows so they are in correct order. Since then, I've found doing shadows first works a bit better for me in case I botch up an area with the darker red, I can fix that easier than if I had both my highlights and shadows at that point. Fixing problems with my highlight is easier to do with Red Gore since you're covering a lighter red with darker. My current steps are base primer, do shadows, correct anything with red gore, do highlights with blood red, filter colour with createx opaque red, hand brush details.

Hey Eggroll, the army is looking fantastic. I've just been silently following your progress, but I must say they look great!

Thanks!

Another quick update. Been sidetracked from painting recently by Mafia 2 but that's over with now. Did get some progress done on my shooty dread. Filled in some details and did some hand painted iconography. Still have a bit more to do before the weather starts:

Also started assembling some assault marines. These are kitbashed from death company/sanguinary guard/tac squad bitz.

Dreadnought is finally finished and based:

Here's a shot of my BA army so far in my display cabinet. Shows everything that's been painted. I'm estimating I'm about 15% done.

Going to be taking a break from the BA painting for now. Feel a bit burned out. I will be entering a local painting contest later in the month with a Marneus Calgar and Honor Guard squad. I'll post my progress here for that eventually.

And I'm back! Thanks for the comments Mick and Kassill. Got some work done this weekend on the heavy weapons which I've had sitting around for at least 2 weeks now. Went for OSL on the plasma and LC guys:

Thanks for the feedback guys.

One question: why not blue helmets? Or are they Tactical squad Heavies?

They were done to be heavy options for the tactical squad I did before. I'm not really fond of the blue helmets the BA dev squad uses so I might just stick with the red when it comes time to paint my dev squad. This way they'll be interchangeable between the tactical and devastator squad.

Alright so today an order showed up from MWG which I placed during their big birthday sale. Here's a picture of the loot(left) next to my previous models on the right. All the boxes contain complete sprues. I've just opened all the boxes to checked the models for miscasts (my baal predator has some miscast issues  )

List of new stuff:

Commander

Command Squad

Ravenwing Battleforce

Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer

Baal Predator

Predator x 2

Razorback

Venerable Dreadnought

Death Company x 2

Terminator Squad

Terminator Assault Squad

Assault Squad x 2

Dante (Not Shown)

Corbolo (Not Shown)

Can't really help it...sale was 30% off which doesn't happen often so I splurged and bought tons. I now have enough of models to paint for a couple of years. I realize many of the models I have aren't optimal for a BA army but since I don't really play, I'm looking to collect at least one of each model in the army.

  • 2 weeks later...

Been awhile since my last update though I've been making good progress on the two vindicators and two rhinos I had primed from before. At the moment, i've finished off the one vindicator and half of the other. I'll finish the third vindi before I get shots of the three together.

The red rhino is also completely done with my first "large" freehand image on the top hatch. Finished that off last night and here are the final shots:

A closeup shot of the freehand. I did the blue shading of the wings with quick bursts from the airbrush.

Finally, I've prepped and primer coated the two HQ's I bought recently. Corbolo's grail was a pain since the model comes with the cup 'filled out'. I had to use varying sized drill bits to drill out the top of the cup which I'll later fill in with some red coloured water effects. So far, all my HQ's have been based with a skull on the base somewhere and I've kept it with these two except dante has a huge pile of skulls on his which he's jumping off of. Figured it would be fitting for him to have a ton of skulls since he is the chapter master:

Wow some great stuff you've got going on. Thats a BIG pile of models, guess you won't be taking the pledge this year. :)

On the painting side the razor looks good, but you haven't painted the banner on the front next to the eagle.
