Thanks for all the feedback guys!

Wow some great stuff you've got going on. Thats a BIG pile of models, guess you won't be taking the pledge this year. ;)

On the painting side the razor looks good, but you haven't painted the banner on the front next to the eagle.

Yeah, I won't be taking a pledge since I doubt I'd be able to keep any promises I make in terms of painting. I'll have to stick with the "it'll be done when it's done" saying. At my current painting rate, I think I'll be done in about a year or two :)

Amazing work! If you have more weapons with dynamic lighting could you do a few step by step pics? I have been trying to do some, but it's not coming out... and certainly not anywhere near as good as yours.

Will do. I still have a un-assembled box of devastators to paint. Once I get to those guys, i'll try and remember to take multi-step photos of how I do the lighting.

Quick shot I took a few days back during the painting that shows my armor painting process at different stages:

http://www.design-vault.com/bloodangels/035armorprocess.jpg

Starting from left is vindi primed with rust colour primer and shadowed and highlighted with airbrush, middle shows vindi with detailing picked out with black paint by hand and then coated with gloss varnish, right shows decals applied and then a coat of testors dull coat. After that step, I pick things out in metallics, paint the wear, pick out details such as lenses and finally airbrush shade the metallics and light sources.

Thanks for the comments Mick and Astador.

Well I managed to finish off my third vindicator last night and took some pics but the camera ran out of juice as I was about to transfer the pics. Had to wait till this morning for the battery to finish charging and transfer the pictures. The leftmost vindi is the one I initially painted and I can't remember if I gloss varnished it or not - judging from the pics, I didn't. The other two looks shinier in the picture but in person, they have a more matte finish as they've all been sprayed with dull cote. The shininess in the pics is probably from my otte light bulb which is positioned to the right of the pic. One on the right is also missing its headlamps which unfortunately is the way the unit came when I bought it off someone. Anyway, here is the line breaker:

Also, another pic of all the armor I've painted so far:

Thanks Mick!

Kitbashed an TLAC cannon turrent tonight for a razorback. Not sure where all the parts came from, mostly from the DA ravenwing upgrade sprue...here's the result:

Also took some pics of my display case. Got my BA on the 2nd level of my Ikea Detolf. Running out of room and had to move the Drop Pod to the third level. Still missing my dreadnought as it's on loan to the LFGS after winning a painting contest.

Here's a shot of my top level - just a random mix of all kinds of models from various ranges:

VERY nice paint style you have there man. Very "Grimdark" lol. I love the ambient lighting effects you do with the heavy weapons and the Dread's searchlight. I also love the freehand work on the rhino, that BA symbol on the top hatch is for lack of a better word Bad-Ass lol.

  • 3 weeks later...

Haven't had an update lately since I got Fallout New Vegas. It's been sucking up all my painting time. I did manage to get some painting in this past week to finish off my DC rhino. Quite happy how it turned out with the skulls on the top and rear hatches. Also working on Brother Corbulo which should be done in the next day or so.

Thanks for the comments Mick and Bloodhowl.

But for the love of all that is right, please tell me you didn't do those skulls with an airbrush!

Sorry...it's done with an airbrush.

Finished off Brother Corbulo tonight. Drilled out the grail and filled out the cup with some water effects with red ink...

I am truly impressed with your painting skills. I am seriously considering getting an airbrush now to try out your techniques. I must know what that miniature in your bottom display case photo, far right is. I can't quite place it but I would love to add one to my collection. Would you mind telling me who makes it?

I think the one you're referring to is the warmonger? It's from Privateer Press: http://privateerpress.com/hordes/gallery/l...units/warmonger

Eggrole,

I have to say, FANTASTIC work! Your Blood Angels Strike Force is beautiful. I absolutely love the dark brooding tones.

And for this reason, I have been inspired to develope a similar BA force as well. It will be a completely differing army list, however, the same tones are desired especially on my vehicles.

Quick question for the pro:

You prime with "red-ish" primer right? Do you find this easier to shade than starting with a black primer/basecoat? I ask b/c I've recently picked up a can of Army Painter Red Primer and could potentially approach your method by using it; but, maybe black would be a safer priming choice. I don't know, what do you think?

Thanks,

Razmus

Thanks Razmus. I'm glad I inspired you to start a BA army. Yes I do use red primer and it's definitely easier to shade than using black. With red primer, most of your work is done already, just need to do shadows and highlights for the red areas. With black, you have to lay down the base coat and then tackle the highlights and shadows. Red is notoriously hard to paint smoothly on black which is why most people use a white primer base when painting red. Red Primer is definitely the way to go if you want to save time and have imo better results. Good luck!
