Eggroll's Blood Angels

Finished off my beakie combat squad I showed before. Had some bad luck doing this squad which included dropping one of them one the carpet right after spraying a fresh layer of gloss varnish. He ended up being covered in carpet fuzz which I had to pick out with tweezers afterwards. Also, my compressor decided to crap out on me (never buy a Campbell Hausfeld compressor). Specifically the air regulator decided to give out so I have no way of dialing in the proper air pressure. Looks like I'll either buy a new regulator adapter or a whole new setup. Anyway, here are the finished models:

Sorry to be so ignorant but do you coat the base aswell? And do you find that the red appears to have a chalky light colour befor you coat it with gloss?

Yup, I spray the entire model including base. The red isn't chalky but it's less saturated before I spray. The gloss definitely gives the colours more vibrance.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I managed to pick up a new compressor this weekend so I'll be back to airbrushing soon. In the mean time, I assembled and primed 10 death co w/ jump packs and 10 assault marines on foot.

Thanks Mick, Malevolent and Chaplain!

Finally finished off my assault squad I've had sitting around forever. Not getting much hobby time these days due to the holidays and family/friend commitments.

Here's the two levels of my display case with my BA army so far. Definitely running out of space.

Very nice army Eggroll. Makes me almost want to start an actual Blood Angels army. Just "almost" (but I think I'll stick with my Nipple Wing for now ;) ).

I love the high contrast, and the richness of the colors is excellent. From a 3 feet away "perspective" (as most armies are viewed at that distance), I have very little to say about the models.

Up close, there is a nit picks I think could improve, that wouldn't make a HUGE difference when viewing the army on the tabletop, but would making viewing the individual infantry up close a LOT "sharper".

My concern is the lack of super-high contrast between where armor plates overlap (like knee joints, the elbow covers, the trims of the shoulder pauldrons, the feet plates, etc.). Adding a faint line for definition to separate the plates will sharpen up the "outline" of the model and give it far more pop. As is, up close the armor seems to "blend" together and you can tell that the models have been airbrushed.

The problem is more evident in your rank and file infantry, and less so in your characters, where you've spent a little more time. The vehicles aren't as BIG an issue because they're generally flat surfaces, so minimal armor overlap won't create the same problem that the infantry have (that and they're large enough that they create natural shadows of their own where armor DOES overlap, like your Land Raider for example).

That being said, I am impressed by the amount of control you have with your airbrush, and would like to inquire as to what brand/make/model you're currently using?

Thanks DV8. Your nipple wing looks great and I'm really looking forward to painting some SG's for my army. I think you're spot on about the comment on lack of edge highlights for my rank and file troops. I'll have to spend a day with some blazing orange and white to highlight some of the edges on my current troops.

For the airbrush I use, it's an Iwata Revolution BR which is relatively cheap. It's a standard gravity fed, dual action AB with a 0.3mm nozzle. It's my first AB and have had it for just under a year. No problems with it so far and would definitely recommend it.

Wow these are excellent, lovely looking army!! Kudo's :tu: Having just looked at pictures and not read the text, how did you achieve the plasma effect (sorry if it has already been answered, I have a hangover today y'see  )

Thanks and sorry for the late reply. The plasma glows are all airbrushed.

Well after a break from painting due to the holidays, I'm back at it. Finally finished off my death company 10 man squad. These guys took an insane amount of time due to all the little bits and bobs they have hanging off them. Also, pretty happy with the way the blue glow on the jet pack vents turned out...

Smashing update Eggroll. A couple of questions: how do you fix the decals, and how easy is it to remove the DA iconography from the Ravenwing BF stuff? I'm considering getting one, as its a nice saving, but I'm a little worried it could be a ton of extra work. Cheers.

For the decals, I use Microsol and Microset which are decals softeners. I only use them for rounded surfaces like the shoulder pads. I start by putting down a coat of gloss varnish first before fixing the decal, then applying a coat of gloss varnish over top once the decal has been set. Finally, I coat the whole thing with Dullcote which removes any shine. For the DA iconography it should be fairly easy though I've yet to start building those. I think most of the DA stuff are on a separate sprue so you can choose whether or not to use them.
