Thanks man. I"ll have to give it a go. I have quite a few bare heads in my Loganwing army and I want to mix up how I paint skin (sadly, skin is one of the few things I don't get a lot of practice with).

No prob. Skin is always one of the harder parts to paint imo though after discovering the use of reds and blues to give colour nuances, it's definitely helped in my painting. Now if I can only figure out how to do eyes in a consistent way that doesn't make the model look cross eyed or retarded, then I'll be all set.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Eggroll, I wish you'd do a tutorial on how you paint the glowing power weapons, I'd love to try the technique. I cant wait to see mephistons guard painted.

There really isn't much of a tutorial writeup that I can do that would be anymore helpful than me listing out the steps since I use an airbrush. I just start with a black primer base, go to enchanted blue, then ice blue and finally 50/50 of ice blue and white. I then edge highlight with white.

Best way to learn would probably be to see it in person or at least on video. Check out awesomepaintjob's videos on youtube. He has a video tutorial on airbrushing a powersword that is very similar to how I do mine.

Impressive army and skills, your minis look better and better each new painting.

May I ask you a couple of questions?

1) How do you paint your metallics? I love the metallic wings on your Drop Pod, and the gold on your infantry, if you could explain both.

2) How did you paint the last Dread? Did you varnished it with Krylon Gloss too? in wich step?

3) When you paint a regular character or infantry model (for example, your librarian), what do you do after finishing basecoat, shadows and lights with your airbrush? do you paint all black before adding colours? I see that Librarian very very clean and defined, just as all your other minis, and I ask myself how do you paint them to achieve that incredible looking ¡

Thanks.

1. I just do the metallics by brush and shade them with the airbrushing. Usually using watered down black.

2. Last dread didn't include any varnish. I painted using standard airbrush methods described throughout this painting log.

3. Yup, I paint all metallic or black areas with black, then start working on the details and metallics.

Dude they are so cool, I will give you 5 mill. for everything!!!

jks (I don't have that much cause I poor ;) ) but there are bloody amazing

Thanks! :(

Finally finished off my three dreads tonight which I've been working on for the past few weeks. Put a bit more work into their bases including one built as a mini diorama with tyranids.

First off is the ironclad dread...not a legal BA dread from what I could tell but don't really care as I wanted to collect at least one of each type in my army:

Next up is the vernable dread. I also painted up the TL Lascanon and the Assault Cannon but they're not equipped in the pics. Had a spare sprue with some land raider parts on it so I took the back plating and built it into the base.

Finally, my favorite of all three. Again, a totally illegal weapons loadout but these were the only arms I had left after doing my DC dread from the BA dread kit. Used a spare dread body and the half human, half machine head which fits the open sarcophagus quite well. This base has the two tyranids on it, first time painting them so wasn't sure about the colour scheme, I just used the standard colours GW shows on their site. Somewhat of a mini diorama, the tyranid in the back is just checking out his dead buddy:

Here's my whole dread collection so far...I think I might have to pick up another BA dread kit to make a dread libby to round out the group.

Very very nice. I love the glow effects that you have on plasma, force wpns and the like. The last one is probably my favourite as well. The grenade launcher or whatever it is looks like a beast, and I've always loved the dread force weapon =)

I don't think anybody cares, and if an opponent actually wanted to raise an issue about it - especially with this army - you have most people's moral backing to not play him

Besides, all three of those dreads are very well done and completely without fault. I impressed once again, Eggroll

EDIT: 1+1+1~=~2

Thanks for all the feedback on the dreads guys! I've been busy the last two weeks working on my 10 man sanguinary guard. Took way longer than I anticipated due to the amount of small details on all the models and the angel wings. Here are the results:

Wow, those Guards are fantastic ¡

You are getting the best looking BA army I have ever seen.

Could you please explain how you painted the gold armor and the feathers? did you use any wash?

PS: I suppose these Force Weapons are painted as always: Black, Regal Blue, Ice Blue, and white lining?

Thanks I love my army too ;)

The gold armor is done using a GW Tin Bitz base (airbrushed). Then I airbrushed on P3 Solid Gold for the midtones and Vallejo Airbrush Colours Gold for highlights. The Vallejo gold is almost a silver colour so it worked well for highlighting. Finally, I airbrushed Daler Rowney sephia ink to give it a more "brown" tone. The sephia ink was also applied with a paint brush in all the recesses too.

The wings I spray primed black, then spray primed white at an angle to get some shading. Then I airbrushed enchanted blue between the larger feathers before painting the end tips white by hand. Then I airbrushed white to smooth out the blends.

Yup, you're right about the force weapons, they're done using my usual paints. :)

The Sang Guard looks good, tough I am not so sure about the half-blue wings. You got any clue to why you did it like that? :( Seems like there should either be blue in all the recesses or not at all, IMO. But hey, you're the master here. Love your work anyway ;)

Crazy good looking!!! Keep it up!

Your glow is exceptional, never saw anything quite like it!

Thanks!

I'm still most excited to see mephistions guard. I cant wait to see the color scheme you use... and the robes... its going to be sweet.

That squad is in teh queue. I think I'm going to hit some biker squads next and am waiting for the inspiration to hit me to do those guys. I'm still not sure on the colour scheme to use on them yet.

Thanks, I think most people's reaction is they really like it or really dislike it. I wanted to do something similar to GW's but with the blue fade and I'm happy with the overall results.

This is the first time I've seen the thread and it reads like a great book, but with pictures. ;)

Theres a lot to be said for airbrush/wash techniques. It can let someone clever churn out an impressive looking army much quicker than other conventional means. The detailing on the glow effects and metal weathering is all very smartly done. Finding a good base color spray is a great practice as well. The duplicolor does come out a little thick at times but it looks as though you were able to overcome the issue fairly well. I also agree with DV8's comments earlier on in this thread. But it really comes down to how much time and effort one wants to put into a large marine army. Especially nowa days when theres very little free time to get anything done. I think your choices were really smart and if I had to start over with a new sizable army my airbrush would be the go-to kit to make it happen as well.

Great work! B)
