Just returned to the game, but a crossroads

Good evening all,

A quick intro; I quit play the game 10 years ago, at the beginning of 3rd ED (just enough time to see Tau released and a few mateys collect armies, then end). I had seen a WD with Grey Knights, but didnt really get to see them as an army at all. I had however, very early in 2nd Ed, collected SoB's when they first came out. Incidently the GK original terms are my favourite models of all the ages.

Despite this, when I returned the game, I was drawn in by the allure of the BA's - the new models and that I had always wanted to collect them but shy'd away as the meta in my groups was you were a nob if you collected BA's, so I avoided them. I've just about completed collecting (not assembling) a jump army (my god it was cheap to buy). Then I managed to stumble into this section ...

I learn that not only are the GH / SoB's still knocking around, that their old codex's (albeit it PDF's) are around and you can field the two together!.

But it leaves me at a crossroads ...

I've seen alot of talk of there could be a new codex, which I assume would mean new plastic models (and potentially new look/better look) for both these armies, but they combine for my favourite things to put on a field. I just cant decide to make the drop, and buy an entire metal army (in the case of SoB's rebuy). So do you guys think screw it, get a force (maybe just a small 1000 point / 1250 / 1500) and just get stuff on the field to play test and get a feel for it again, or sit tight a few months and see if any info comes to fruition - with that said do you guys even think a combined SoB/GK army will be legal with the new codex's (not sure on where 5th ed stands on alliances in standard single player armies these days)

There is one thing I don't need to get - I still have the original GK's which I plan to convert up a bit and bring them into the present.

With all that said, I am both feet in on the GK/SoB side (ok and a bit of the inquistion!).

The rumors regarding a new GK codex have been persistent. Even I have been persuaded that we're going to see a new GK army list by about March of next year. I agree with you that the GK models are still the finest things Citadel has ever made, so if you want to collect some GK models, go nuts! Nobody knows what the new army will look like, however. And of course the metals will definitely be supplemented -- if not outright replaced -- by plastic, so make of that what you will.

No real rumors yet about Sisters/Witch Hunters. Which means barring something truly unexpected, don't expect anything new for them in less than a year, and the smart money is that it'll be longer than that for them. (Though who really knows what GW is thinking?) So if you want to build a "real" functioning Inquisition army, I'd say you're better off building Sisters right now over GKs.

And finally, this may not matter to you, but GK armies are really very weak in the current edition of the game rules. Their old codex is really showing its age right now. :P Sisters are still rock solid and very dangerous. So if "competitiveness" matters, Sisters is the way to go right now.

Try and hunt around for the printed codecies and you will find the allies rules so you could just ally a few squads into your BA of each, but these may be a bit hard to find now.

I think you should assemble and paint your BA now (which if you go for a standard higher than what you usually aim for) may take quite some time then use that, all the while checking places like eBay for the old codecies.

My standard is pretty decent, but 10 year gap has had some telling on my skills, so I am just using it to remember really (OHHHH THATS HOW I BLEND?!) Annoying thing is that some of my old staple paints are out of production, especially the main flesh colour, I mean Elf Flesh sucks.

Codex wise I've never been one to shy away from hard armies. I won multiple tournies in London with my Ravaging Horde Wood Elves vs full army listed and new modeled up armies (that'll teach em to call me a tree hugger). I enjoy the challenge, but also believe that there is always a way to win. Nothing better than beating people that choose an easy to play list and try and let the rules win it for them, half the time the armies become a crutch for the player itself.

I still think the old SoB's are stunning models, though that new tank looks bloody awful. I am not the sort of person to hold my cash back so I can imagine myself ordering a few bits.

My local store definatly has a couple of copies of the Wh book, ebay may have to provide me with the DH one.

I think worst comes to worst I fork out another couple of hundred for the new models, at least I'd have something to use with the new codex while I build it up.

No worries bud, you'll pick it quickly. And if you don't there'll always be someone around here ready to bust your chops for making errors. :D

I was in the exact same place as you six months ago. Only I use to collect High Elves. ;)

Do you know the thing that worries me about the possibility of new Grey Knight [Terminator] models coming our way? The quality of the current range is so high and so many people proclaim them to be amongst the best models in the GW range (and not just =][= players ;)) that it's going to be hard to improve on them. Seriously, the new range could be relatively disappointing...

Also, have to agree with bulley, the SOB models are pretty decent too. They often get outshined by their grey brothers but I have definitely found them to be more interesting to paint than other power armour models. Plus I must be one of few who didn't hate the Seraphim models.

Regarding the Sisters models -- including Seraphim! (I have a unit all painted up for allying purposes) -- I agree with you 100% Oiad. When I first jumped into this hobby, I was this close to playing Sisters/WH instead of GKs/DH. The only reason I went the GK route was because of those gorgeous GK Terminators. So so so very awesome. :D

I am just going to do a bit of both, and get some guard/vanilla marines as well to run with both GK and SoB depending on how I feel/want to test.

I am glad that BA's got me back into the game as to get my jump army it is so cheap and completely different to what I've done 40K before. But GK's were my first loves, and SoB's were the first army I had real enjoyment winning with (my Eldar before that and SW's afterwards both felt way to easy to play).

Also going to recollect my Wood Elves (though using some of the remaining models I still have), may as well go both feet in ...

Well I've been doing some serious thinking over this, reading the PDF's fully.

I started out with the GH - since I have the original models I kind of wanted to look at them a little bit, but once I read the WH PDF I fell right back in love with them, I absolutely adore the special rules (Faith points et al) and what really surprised me, was that I really liked, which shocked me, was the inquistors.

I've decided that WH will make my core army, and I'll do GH as a hobby on the side (models are way to pretty not to want). The challenge then lies in making dated codex's work, something I've never been shy of doing, and quite glady accept. First batch of my Sisters are on their way (I did find half an unpainted squad in my bitz box, the remenments of my old army that I was I never gave away!).
