I have caught the Pre-Heresy/Crusade Bug and its given me Yellow Fever, or to be more precise Golden Yellow Fever. After a Break from 40k to focus on LOTR Im back and this time I'm trying to paint yellow as I've tried this hard colour in the past and has always come out less than perfect more a chalky tan rather than the wonderful golden yellow that Imperial Fists should be. So i Will be trying again with a new technique learned on this bored recently and hopefully the results will be much better.

The Army with be mainly Mark.IV armour with some II,III and V chucked in for more specialist units, as it'll be based during the end Great Crusade/Start of the Horus Heresy

First up is the Armless Bandits.... Tactical Squad Kriegsturm Led by Sergeant Diaz

This will be the Standard ML/Flamer Tactical Squad with a conservatively armed Sergeant with a bolt pistol and chainsword.

Are you planning on doing Rogal Dorn?

I am embarked on a regular/post heresy Imp Fist challenge of my own but am looking to convert my own version of Dorn just for the hell of it.

I'd like to know what ideas you have if so...

and also what yellow technique you're planning to use?

Unfortunately Im not planning to do a Rogal Dorn for my army, but instead have it led my Sigismund himself which at the moment Im thinking will be a conversion on Captian Lysander witha Relic Blade rather than the Fist of Dorn and Made too look more Pre Heresy Obviously...

And the Yellow Technique I Will Be Using is this Tutorial

Thanks to XenoFexx

EDIT: Picture Time!

First Up its Sergeant Diaz, a Veteran of the Pacification Mundus Prime, he suffered a near fatal wounding from an Ork Warboss, who had killed his sergeant seconds earlier with his Power Klaw. The blow from the Klaw nearly spilt him in twain. He has since had the majority of his Left Side reformed in Bionics by the Medicae Team Aboard the Phalanx Before Returning to Command his previous squad with a Stubborness born out of strife, bearing a Brand New Suit of Mark VI Armour

  • 1 month later...

Well no responses at all to my last post??? for that you can't blame me that I became a bit complacent in updating this WIP thread. But now I've got back at university I’ve got back into painting.

Whilst undercoating the last 5 of the squad of my fists tragedy has struck! In the form of cheap black spray paint... (Looked like they been rough coated before spraying and complete loss of details) :P They will need stripping before I can finish the squad and this time I’ll use decent black spray paint.

Anyways I present you with all 5 members who were unaffected all resplendent in the MKVI armour. Identification Demi-Squad Diaz consists of Sergeant Diaz, Specialist Pilla and Brothers Kell, Imperius & Solomon. Armed with a Flamer for Cleanse and Burn operations, Specialist Pilla forfeits the range of a Plasma Gun for the close range killing capacity of the Flamer, his brothers oblige and also like to get in close with their bolters to deliver the Emperors truth to xeno’s and resistant humans..

Cheers!

Looking good mate, though can I make some suggestions?

Wash the sergeants face with some thinned down purple was to give it more depth and perhaps lose the hazard stripes on the chainsword, the just dont seem right to me

I really like what you're doing here. I like the story and fluff driving a lot of your model work and as you put, the conservative approach to kick butt space marines. Sometimes 5 guys with a flamer and a sgt with humble weapons is just cooler, especially for fists.

My points would be for paint. It looks like you're painting is clean and consistent, but the yellow, black, and metal look unfinished. My suggestions would be to highlight the yellow in a couple of spots, or create some distinction between colors using a brown wash. I can tell you layered the yellow up to it's current form however it doesn't look finished yet.

your metallics could use some black/brown wash and maybe some shine on the corners and edges using a lighter metallic.

The black could use some gray highlighting on the cabling and shoulder pads. I can somewhat make a little out, or it's the lighting, however the black with lower highlights throws off the yellow, which is consistent and lighter. What i'm trying to say is half of the model is too dark, and the other half too light.

Bloodhowl's advice on the thinned purple around his bionics is good. Play around with very thin purple and dark red to get a scar tissue, natural feel to skin in eye sockets, bionic joins, and places with creases.

It's looking good man (I like your book collection) but I would agree with Dan the Deamon about the yellow needing a bit of highlighting. And I dunno if this is a personal thing but I wouldn't leave the black in the cracks of the armour, they're not so deep that no light whatsoever goes down in them; I would make them a bit lighter. Maybe thin out some yellow (a lot) and lighten up the recesses a bit?

Humbug  Blacklining looks awesome with yellow so I say stick with it, it's highly stylised but that just helps the minis stand out even more. I will agree that some highlights would really set these guys off and help show the detail a little better though.
