kalicurealm
I just thought I'd put pen to paper about something thats happened to me a few times over the year or so that I've been painting and sculpting that have caused me to, for lack of a better term, level up as an artist in this hobbie. This has happened to me a few times. I'll be painting or reading the news paper or having a spot of tea when all of a sudden something seemingly obvious hits me like a truck and it instantly improves my painting or sculpting abilities. Anyways, this post is to hopefully inspire some ephiphanies in other people as well so go ahead and post moments that this happened to you and what you learned. kalicurealm
This has happened to me on two seperate occassions. The first was kind of dumb but it just clicked out of the blue while I was sitting outside with my coffee looking at the sky. As I said. I was just looking and when I looked down a beautiful woman with a red scarf was walking past me and it was like it was the first time I actually looked at a texture or colour. I realized instantly that the shadows weren't simply black over red, but subtle variations of red and that the shadows and highlights weren't always on the uppermost parts of the scarf or in the depths. It had a fluid feeling to it. The moment I realized this I "leveled-up" and my painting was never the same again. That said: go out and look at things and see how the shadows and highlights interact with the 'base colour' of the object. Study things in the real world. I guarentee you'll come to the same realization as I did sooner or later. kalicurealm
On another occassion I was looking at a dog running around in the park and noticed that where the sun hit the part in the dogs hair it was shining almost white and I was like "WOAH" if I did that to the part on my Sanguinary guard model it would look shiny too! Like it had just been washed. Again. The simplicity of studying it shocked me, how had I not realized it before? Again, nature is a wonderful source of inspiration. Hemal
Using glazes and washes levelled me up - I used to just flood the area but am now much more controlled, and also take a massive cue from teh Eavy metal articles in WD - I really level up each time I read one of these!
