New to the Fang

Brother Crazywolf

Recommended Posts

Greetings brothers one and all.

Ales to each and every one of you.

I have been lurking for some time here and have finally decided to get with the program and join. I have been interested in 40K for many a year and just recently started playing and building my army. As you might have guessed, I chose the Wolves of Fenris. Right now I am in the process of getting my army finished (construction of my current models and of course painting) but I have had a couple of friendly games with a friend of mine (Brother Predacon) who has been quite generous and patient with me in the learning process.

I will hopefully figure out what exactly I have to work with soon, but it is in the 1500 points range currently. I am missing heavy support of any useful type at the moment, so I have been working with proxies to see what I want to get.

I just wanted to say that just by lurking I have learned that you are all a good crew to be around and are willing to help.

Welcome new lad! Have fun here, look around, ask questions.

We don't b... Oh. Maybe we do bite... :)

Enjoy your stay man!

what our Brother Firenze is trying to say, we kind of tend to sink our fangs into a neck like a vampire, but unlike a vampire we tear out the flesh of our oponent. But be wary Crazywolf, you dont want the wulfen to take over. :)

Welcome to the Fang fellow pup.Have an ale and let us drink to Russ and victory *raises tankard and gulps the ale down*

Another bloodclaw?!? The wolfpriests must be on a recruiting drive. Anyway, welcome to the Fang laddie, have an ale on me. To know what type of heavy support to suggest we need to know what the rest of your army is. So tell me pup, how exactly do you plan to prosecute the Allfather's enemies?

For Russ and the Allfather! And thanks for the ale.

I haven't quite decided on a Great Company as of yet since I am still in development/recruiting mode.

I have the following models built or stripped:

1 Wolf Lord/Wolf Guard Battle Leader

5 Terminators (4 with stormbolters and power fists, one with storm bolter and power sword (in use as a Rune Priest at the moment)

1 Dreadnought with Multimelta and close combat weapon/heavy flamer or storm bolter)

15 Blood Claws (12 with chainswords and bolt pistols, three with bolt pistols and swords (I will paint 2 as regular, one as power)

29 Grey Hunter type models with various goodies (power weapons and bolters x 2, close combat weapon(ax) and bolt pistol x1 (I am tempted to paint this one as a Mark of the Wolfen, power fists and bolters x2, a plasma pistol and chainsword, a flamer)*

1 Long fang Leader (bolt pistol and chainsword)

1 Long Fang with Missle Launcher

To build as of yet:

10 Power Armor Space Wolves**

Njal Stormcaller

Rhino

Basically boils down to this:

I got and split with Brother Predacon an Assault on Black Reach set, trading him the Orks and a Blood Angels Veteran Sargeant for a Pack box and a Rhino and a small amount of spare bits he had laying around and wasn't going to be using. I snagged the balance of the Grey Hunters and the Blood Claw pack used at one of the local shops and gave them a bath. I didn't really care for the paint job (not that I could do any better right now).

* My Grey Hunter Squad ratio is of course off, I can only field 3 squads (9+1 wolf guard) legallly. This leaves me with one model to spare (I can paint one as a Wolf Guard, but not sure if I want a power weapon or a power fist, leaning towards a power weapon for the higher initiative) Thoughts?

** I am thinking that I am going to use the 10 man pack as such unless someone comes up with a better idea:

2 Plasma Guns (I need the heavier firepower)

2 Grey Hunters with Wolf Standards and standard equipment

4 Wolf Guard with mixed weapon loads, not quite sure what yet. Looking for suggestions.

2 Mark of the Wolfen models

My standing shopping list at least as of right now:

2 Rhinos for the Grey Hunters

1 Razorback

1 Devastator squad

1 Predator

Questions, comments, critique?

Thanks for the warm welcome.

That actually looks pretty solid lad. I personally prefer full ten man Grey Hunter squads for the free special weapon, but to each his own. I'd keep the terminator with powersword as a rune priest, their powers are absolutely nasty. You might also want to make a pair of meltagun grey hunters so one squad at least can deal with AV14. As for heavy support I'd say either longfangs with missile launchers and lascannons and/or a vindicator. Both help (somewhat) fill the anti-armor gap and can reasonably kill anything else. The vindicator also attracts enemy anti tank fire which allows the transports to deliver their payloads unmolested. Most importantly though is to play a few battles and find what fits you best. Good luck!

Thanks for the input Jonas. I am looking to get some of the Long Fangs with some work from the Devastator squad and supportiing them with the Razorback. I will look into getting another pack box once I have some more assembly and painting done. That way I can fill out the rest of the packs and still have some options. I also have my eye on getting the Meltagun bitz so those are tentatively on the list as well.

Any suggestions on how to load those wolf guard? Right now I am thinking a mix of ranged weapons balanced with close combat.

Remember, I don't use wolf guard in my packs, so take this with a grain of salt. In 40k squads, not individuals, have targetted purpose since they must fire and assault together at the same target. Accordingly attached wolfguard should complement their squads, not try to fill a different niche. For example, a wolfguard with combi-melta has no purpose being in a melta armed grey hunter pack. In this case a wolfguard with Combi melta and powerfist would be ideal. Also remeber to try to get the most from your attacks. If your wolfguard has a combiweapon, don't give him a powersword or frostblade, as such weapons are better used with a pistol for more attacks.

So here are three pack builds along with what I think would be an ideal wolfguard.

- 9 Grey Hunters with a melta, powerfist, rhino = Wolfguard w/ combi melta and powerfist

-9 Grey hunters with plasma gun, plasma pistol, powersword, rhino= Wolfguard with frost axe and plasma pistol

- 9 Bloodclaws with flamer, powerfist, rhino = Wolfguard with combiflamer, wolfclaw

Put simply, get a wolfguard that does the same thing as the unit he leads.
