Pooling your Knowledge of DH part5

First off you guys deserve an apology. This series IMO was going rather well in 2009, creating detailed discussions on the specific units in our codex. Back then the rumour of New GK's put me off continuing the guide, why bother getting tactics when they could be updadated shortly. This was a bad decision as nearly a year later the new codex is still not on the horizon. Lack of updates and other life stuggles (New house/Baby) had me temporary seperated from my 40K... Till now

For those who do not undertand I will add links to my sig of all the previous topics. Now we are onto units it is now a discussion of experience with said unit (Less work for me, I still have the life stuggles ya know)

What a return this week too. With the unit that makes the Deamonhunters codex. The Grey Knight Terminator Elite squadron. Deep striking, riding or footslogging? Incinerating or Psycannon artillery? And the ever debateful free TH/SS.

So what have you used in battle that deserves a special mention?

Its hard to belive that no one has never used GKT as an elite. I have twice:

They were 4 man strong with a psycannon in the squad and another psycannon with the Brocap. Targeter too

Keeping at the back of the field they provided an expencive yet effective fire base. Able to keep at max range and protect the mini purg squad holding base objective.

Shrouding actualy came into play a few times. And any force that tried to take my objective was recieving a combined of 12 Psycannon shots. Any that survive then met the Termies, including a wave of 20 boys that were beaten down. This left the Mini Purg squad to continue to pound on anything they see.

I will use GKT as an elite at 2000 points - with a BC and x2 Psycannons - much the way you describe sans the Purg squad (though my love for psycannons is tempting me to make x4 psycannons and the GKT elites my remaining 500 points from 1500 to 2000).

I am like everyone else though, my first squad of GKT's will be a retinue to protect the BCHQ or GM.

There's too much I5+ these days, and coupled with our old Ss rules, GKT in CC die are too easily to Power Weapons. I've had a squad of 5, be charged by 15 'letters, and even though the 'letters went last (due to Rites...), they still wiped the GKT off the table due to the sheer amount of Power Weapon hits.

When I was still using the DH Dex, I most often used to run my GKT as multiple squads of three, with 2 Psycannons (one on the BC, one on the Squad), for Shrouding backed long range fire support.

I'm probably pulling a Captain Obvious here but the answer to that (and I realize it's pretty tricky to pull off because of DS) is deny the Bloodletters close combat. This is partly a question of getting lucky (because of DS scatter) but skills come into play as well.

I'll give you an example. I play most of my games versus my younger brother who plays Chaos Daemons. The trick is to be able to let your Grey Knights and GKT units mutually support eachother, so when a unit of Daemons drops right in front of you, you'll be able to meet them with a stupendous amount of Storm Bolter and Psycannon fire. Luckily, Daemons haven't got that many ranged attacks or armour so that helps with pulling that off.

I've been able to reduce packs of Daemons to bits while using my entire Grey Knight force as one big moving firebase that is continually maneouvering in such a way that each unit is able to shoot into the killzone of another. Seeing a ten-Daemon-strong squad of Bloodletters being reduced to two or maybe three models in one turn is quite a sight ;)

We don't have the firepower. They hate the Psycannons, but their troops are so much cheaper.

You get a round to shoot out the first wave, if you don't the reserves DS exactly where the Dameon Player wants off the remaining squads Icons.

Then you get charged.

It's also worse if they get a good half army roll and get a couple of DPN on the first turn to soak up your fire.

Add to that the Flamers coming in off the Icons and kill squads of 10 at a time with ease.

But this is straying away from topic now. ;)

I digress, you'd really think that being the DH we'd actually be the best choice to face them in CC. But we're not. The dearth of Power Weapons sees to that. And the only reason we stand any chance is due to Rites (and the lack of grenades in the army). Maybe when we get the new Storm Shields, depending on cost of course.

I know you're right. That's why I stated that luck has as much to do with it as skill :P

Hopefully the new Dex (whenever it will be released...) will take care of our current disadvantages and puts us back where we belong (ie, right in the face of some very ugly Daemons :cuss )
