ImperialReaper
So I already primed lots of plastic models using the GW chaos black primer. Now I tried some metal models and just epicly failed. I had a librarian which I had to apply like 3 coats of primer until all metal parts were covered. Then I asked arround and I got told to clean them - since some substances left over from the production process as well as sweat from my hand will cause glue and primer to not stick to the metal. Now I used a glove and washed each model using dish liquid and drying them with a hair dryer afterwards. I STILL FAILED. Especially the wings of Astorath did not take the color - it just ran down the metal wings and drippled off the metal. I am out of ideas now - hope someone can help. Sharpsilver
GW's own primers are notorious for not being that great. If your in the UK, Halfords do some excellent Colour primers which are better. Brother Nihm
Shake those cans, for a minimum of 5 minutes. I've had the same experience with GW sprays. Shake those babies! Obliterator
Now I used a glove and washed each model using dish liquid and drying them with a hair dryer afterwards. Maybe stating the obvious here, but you did wash the model with clear water to get rid of the soap afterwards, right? Other then that, shake the can long enough and you should be fine. Gurth
Then I asked arround and I got told to clean them Instead of washing with water and dishwashing liquid, use a copper-wire brush (buy these at DIY stores) to remove all the whitish stuff that is on the model so that it shines. Do this before gluing the model together, as it will let both primer and glue stick to the bare metal instead of to this layer of oxides, mould release agent, etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/210468-i-just-cant-apply-primer-on-metal-miniatures/#findComment-2506205 Share on other sites
Cretheus
Also you should be doing about three thin coats of primer anyway, toi many people including myself have made the mistake of blasting it with primer to get it black and end up losing some of those nice small details. be patient and itll come good in the end, alsodont spray to close to the model as sometime the propelant will actually blow the primer into recesses, i keep my primer at about 30 cm from the models and you get a much better and even coverage Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/210468-i-just-cant-apply-primer-on-metal-miniatures/#findComment-2506207 Share on other sites
Ragnar Blood Giver
well this may help aswell... with metal models once I have cleaned them down and dried them off, I will base them using a Hycote primer (black or white depending on paint scheme). I then after it has dried coat it with a 'clear lacquer'.. now once that has dried it will look very shiny, but don't worry as the other paints will go on the same. when I do it this way I notice that the models will not flake.. http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/ff123/emphand1/Warhammer%20pics/Njal.jpg with Njal you can see the other paints have gone on as normal, but I still have to finish of the raven which is still shiny (base aswell lol). those sprays I use cost £2.50 quite a saving... hope this helps. Joasht
I wash every model I own before priming, simply because everything (metal, plastic, resin) has some mold residue on it, even though its not necessarily evident on plastic. I take an old toothbrush, some soap and warm water, and work on it for a few minutes. I shake my cans for very long, often 5-10 minutes if its a brand new can, and at least 1 minute whenever I'm going to use it after its stood still for a while, and spray in several coats rather than one thick layer. If you take all the precautions and spray at the right distance (due to high heat and humidity where I'm from I usually do it pretty close to the model) you shouldn't have any problems unless the can you have is a little faulty (e.g. far too old). Had that problem once, ruined my Khador Behemoth :/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/210468-i-just-cant-apply-primer-on-metal-miniatures/#findComment-2506400 Share on other sites
