Hey, just curious how people spec out their Honour Guards. The options are pretty much limitless so i was wondering what sorta builds people have found effective. I have yet to field Honour Guard since the new codex came out, but im going to add a PW heavy unit in the new list im working on.

My Honour Guard are equipped as follows

Honour Guard#1-2: Power weapon, Jump Pack

Honour Guard #3: Power weapon, Chapter Banner, Jump Pack

Honour Guard #4: Blood Champion, Power Weapon, Combat Shield, Jump Pack

Honour Guard #5: Novitiate, Power Weapon, Jump Pack

275 pts

When I ran an Honor guard, I ran this:

jump packs. 1 guy with fist, meltagun and banner. champion, novitiate.

I'll point out that the Novitiate is not of type Honor Guard and therefore can not take upgrades.

dang, your right, thats unfortunate. i originally read it as "Any member of the Honour Guard may..."

As a rule, I have been sticking to a 30pt per model upgrade limit. 30pts is a lot but I figured that an honor guard should be given a lot of equipment. Here is my current loadout:

Sang. Novitate (can't upgrade gear :D)

Blood Champion (also, can't give more gear)

Chapter/Company banner (no weapon upgrades at the chapterbanner is already reaching my max limit)

Honor guard (PW, Melta pistol)

Honor guard (?)

I was thinking maybe of a thunder hammer for that last guy. But a thunderhammer seems out of sorts given how expensive it is. Perhaps I should look at a powerfist + flamer or powerfist + storm bolter. Not sure really. This would be paired with a dual claw captain.

Sometime in the future I think I may be making a dedicated plasma or melta squad but definitely not this time around. I envision that where I to buy a Tycho I would pair him with a melta honor guard and have sternguard in tow as that seems more in tune with the infantry setup that Tycho seems geared for. Not sure which character best fits a plasmagun squad though.

My

my 2 honor guard units I am currently building are as follows..

Squad 1 (Melta death)

Sanguinary Noviate

3x Honor Guard - Meltagun/Boltgun

1 Honor Guard - PF/ Storm Bolter

Squad 2 (Melee Death)

Blood Champion

Sanguinary Noviate

1 Honor Guard - TH/BP

2x Honor Guard PW/BP

I'm still debating what units with get jump packs, or if I will make them switchable with normal back packs.

I know this squad is expensive

Sang. Noviate jump pack bolt pistol

2Lightning claw+Meltagun

2Chainsword+Meltagun

BUT

Team them up with Dante and when they arrive usually turn 2(re-rolls are kewl) and then watch your opponent

as they set down right at the rear armour of his nice shiny targ..sorry tank.

It's great!!

"He who caries the biggest Boom Stick usually wins!!"

I have 2.. One is a jack of all trades that serves an all around support purpose in my army.

Sanguinary Novitiate

Power Fist

Power Weapon

Meltagun

Flamer

Razorback

The other is a medium range shooty backup unit.

that plasmagun build looks pretty nasty haha, nice and simple, i might try it out.

I have looked at the power expensive unit of

2x lightning claw and storm shield

1x power fist melta

1x sang priest

1x melta and storm shield

Maybe a chapter banner if I could find a way.

All with jump packs, or transport

Thoughts?

I also like 4x flamer

Novitiate

Lightning claw & stormshield

Lightning claw & stormshield

Power fist & stormshield

Pair of lightning claws

They are an awesome close combat unit. I typically attach either a Recluisarch or Chaplain. Everyone has a jump pack and the character also has an infernus pistol.

0b

@nachocuban

Clever use of boltgun + meltagun...that actually looks like a useful config.

I figure I that unit will probably never charge anything, and if it does, the 1 melta shot will be more deadly then the single BP shot. While with the bolter, it can opt for 2 shots at something the meltagun is overkill for, or 1 shot at range.

I run a dual librarian list, one tank hunter with blood lance, the other infantry hinter with blood sword, I tqke 2HG geared accordingly;

2X HG w/melta

2x HG w/ melta/SS

novitiate

2x HG w/PW one with banner

2X HG w/SS and LClaw

novitiate

all have Jp's as it is an Angels of death army.

I'll soon be trying to run the following honour guard:

Honour guard

Jump packs

Blood champion

Chapter Banner

Powerfist

Meltagun

Power weapon

Total = 265

They'll be running with Astorath (since I wanted to try playing him as well). Personally I think this is about the right composition for a honour guard, not too many wargear since that makes every model lost painful and still decent killing power when charging (2 power weapons and a powerfist can take care of a lot, especially with Astorath attached).

Jump Packs, Chapter Banner + Powerfist (on same guy, the fist is optional really), thats it. To be used in a jump pack-heavy army, hiding behind the waves of RAS to convey its two buffs and in many cases I'd probably hold it back from charging on the first turn or two of combat, using its offensive power PURELY to mop up enemies that almost has no chance to kill the Banner/Priest. Cheap and simple, the squad already has a Priest and Chapter Banner in it and is therefore already a high priority target for the opponent. The fist is there just in case something very big gets a charge on it.

Chances are, if your squad has a big target already painted on it (as this one does), whatever is thrown at the squad would butcher you even if you had a ton of power weapon attacks, and frankly I see no freaking reason to go all nuts on weapon upgrades on these guys because they rapidly enter the realm of "Sanguinary Guard + 1 Sanguinary Priest" price-wise, and Sanguinary Guard have better shooting on the charge and better armor. Not to mention you get six guys for those points, not five and the Priest can hide separated from the unit.
