Land Raider needs finishing

Personally, I would add some color to the grill on the rear top of the land raider as well as the indented armor sections on the back (like the green you have on the front). Other than that, it's a matter of getting some shading and highlighting to look really good. I know sometimes photographs really make some details like that hard to see, and your image looks like it has a lot of flat colors. They are applied very well though, and look very clean and crisp.

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

It is not shaded at all (apart from where the spray has not gone quite in to the recesses!), and just black-lined to give it some depth/contrast.

I have no plans to shade it. I don't trust myself not to spoil it, it's taken me since Christmas to get it to this stage! :(

The pods on tops of the sponsons might get some extra attention, and I think I will take up RayJ's idea of more green on the back area.

The Engine has a lot more TinBitz with silver highlight than shows here, and all of the grills are black-lined.

From the front, you can see the green 'windows' better.

As to swords/seals/etc, is there a good (cheap, easy!) source of such things, apart from decals? I have plenty of GW Decals, but never seem to get decent results. My green-stuff skillz are ... shall we say 'nominal'...

I've got a few accessories left over, from the LR and LR (haha! Land Raider and Leman Russ!) boxes, and some dreadnought and terminator bits (Purity seals, wreaths etc). I'll have a rummage around!

You've given me some food for thought. I'll get back to you when I've put some of into practice! :)

Purity seals would help. The metal areas could probably do with a wash of Badab Black, perhaps mixed with a brown to denote age rather than a 'factory fresh' look.

Is the main colour a pure white? If it is then highlighting may be hard (although you could still do it with the green areas. Weathering would also help to ground the model and make it appear more realistic.

As to iconography - how are your free hand skills? The DA emblem can take a little practice to get right, but isn't that difficult. You'd probably want to practice elsewhere a few times before trying it on the Land Raider.

Overall, I'd say the model is put together very nicely and painted in a very crisp style. Kudos to you for the black lining - I know how patient you have to be to do that and it looks good!

Or cheat with freehanding... semi free handing tutorial:

Take a pencil, draw what you want to paint, fill in the lines :-) Works great for me!

Also you could look at the Ravenwing extra's kit, it has plenty of bits you could bolt on like scrolls, purity seals, wings/swords etc etc.

OK, I've done the rear recessed area in green to match the front, and found a few Purity Seals and bits. These will be added soon.

I'm not going to freehand anything on this :)

I will be tidying up the black-lining, and taking a few better pics soon. Roll on the weekend! ;)

Thanks for all the ideas.

It needs some red in the form of Deathwing symbols and/or other red items. Even painting the crewman in Mechanicus colour-scheme might help. Possibly the green is a bit bright (could be the camera though). Tis a great 'Raider - very cleanly painted.

Also add some battle and wear damage to selected areas - but don't overdo it!! Check out how VanSan handles the use of chipped paint in his excellent topic here.

Cheers

Thanks for the tips.

The green is a bit bright, but my colour scheme isn't quite as dark as most Dark Angels. :(

I've not put a wash on it, which would help.

I have a few purity seals and extra bits waiting to be added, I will see about using some red in them. It would set the colours off well.

I'm waiting to add battle damage after its first outing! :D

As mentioned, my free-hand skills are pretty poor, and I've never had much luck with decals, so I'm struggling to add nice pictures to it :P

Nice beginning, I too use skull white as my bone colour (skulls are bones after all :D )

to give depth to a model that is white and therefore hard to highlight I recommend a VERY light drybrush of chainmail over most the edges of the vehicle. Dont use a round brush use a small (3mm ish) bastard head brush and apply the paint with the side of the bristles not the ends. This is not battle damage mearly scratching and weathering in a hostile environment.

I would also agree with the above posters that you need to be brave with washes on weapons and areas of interest, they really bring models to life with minimal effort and any mistakes can be easliy fixed with my above recommendation)

If you are feeling really brave apply a really watered down black was to the green to give depth and drybrush your original colour over lightly to hide any splotching.

Stay away from freehand unless you are happy wiht your skill, the best way to get better is to use the 3 Ps.

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE :P
