HH Nemesis book review

So I'm 80% done with the Horus Heresy book Nemesis and I gotta admit I'm rather disappointed by something.

The various assassins are far too human for my liking. The background I'm aware of supports the notion that the various assassin factions are often augmented to a level that approaches Astartes (albeit in different ways) but these characters seem more like a ragtag band of IG specialists instead of some of the most highly decorated members of their clades.

It was like they watered down the whole "grimdark" of the world and went with a much lighter, almost sitcom cast, especially with the brother vs sister element.

P.S. I thought Spear was awesome, very much liked his character. A true terror weapon.

Yeah I found them a little too human, particularly the Garantine.

I also didn't really like the sibling thing, as a little cheesey.

Overall I enjoyed the book though, but will be looking forward to seeing some Astartes action in the next book.

Actually nice to see a book review or two.

I just picked up the classic Ian Watson Inquisitor trilogy - I had the original release from 20 odd years ago, but never got the 2nd or 3rd book, so glad they re-released it (was out of print for better part of 2 decades) and the Grey Knight books.

After those though I really need to read some good "all round fluff" books if you know what I mean, my knowledge of over all fluff is sorely lacking due to memory loss and not being to attenful when it came to that sort of thing back in the day.

I actually enjoyed almost all HH books, the exception being the first DA book (too "fantasy-ish" for my taste). I even like the oft-maligned "Battle for the Abyss". I stopped the Ian Watson =I= trilogy after a few chapters. It felt too "gamey" for me. I hate when the action in the book feels like I reading a battle report. For example, in Fulgrim (I think?) Eldars attack and the author repeatedly describes a vehicle as "skimming" around. Ok, yeah, we understood it's a skimmer. Or in another (the =I= trilogy, I think) the character shoots it's plasma pistol but "the pistol got hot, burning his hand".

I'm really looking forward to the GK trilogy. I'm keeping it aside and will start reading it when the new codex comes out!

The first is great, the second so-so.

If you disliked the first DA book for being too fantasy, you'll hate the third GK book. ;)

I dont remember the first Ian Watson book being "gamey" - I've read it a couple of times (once like 15 years ago, once last year when I found it after moving house) I'll have to have a look out for that, sometimes I miss things like that in a book when I really enjoy the actual story (I fill in the gaps) E.G being Tim Zahn SWars books, I love them the first time round, but can never re-read them once i know the story as his writting style is awful. That said, I am going to quickly re-read it (Inquistor) before I read the 2nd/3rd books, though it is a back log of books (after my GK book, and a few other non-GW like Flashman and a World War Z).
I avoided a lot of the fantasy books just because I found, despite WHF being the game I prefered, the fluff pretty naff. My brother (a few years older than me) has some of the much older books (early 90's late 80's) and after that they seemed to go massivily down hill, like Gotrix and Felix or whatever those 2 cartoon characters were called.
Darn, it can't be worst that a knight errand going into the wood after a mythical beast, can it? I used to love sword and sorcery novels, but not so much anymore...

Spoiler;

Alaric becomes 'conan' and fights in the Gladitorial Pits for the glory of Khorne. Essentially.

I won't read that spoiler, as I intend to read the books. So that spoiler shall be a daemonic thorn of foul bone, lodged in the dark depths of my soul, bloodying my days and my nights in eternal agony...

Or... euh... well, I'll just not read it until after the books  And I'll just hope that the main character doesn't become... Raistlin Majere!

In my Opinion the GK Trology is locatet in the upper Segment of all W40K Books I've read so far........there are a few "lenghts" in it (specially in the last one) the Story is sometime weird (again last part) and sometimes it's just funny (and again the last one).........ther is in my Opinnion a LOT of Fluff regarding to the =I= ...........!!!! So good so far......read it, it's worth it....

Finished the book the other day and I wanted to say that the ending was pretty good.

First they unmask the Custodian, then Dorn shows up and then the Emperor. Even though I'm a dirty traitor, I do enjoy whenever they decide to do something with the Emperor.
