ok so I managed to start picking up some stuff here & there. so far I have these:

x1 SM Battle Force box

x1 SM Commander box

x1 Scout Snipers box

x1 SW Terminator box

x2 Devistator squad box

x1 AoBR Dreadnought

x5 Thunderwolves

ok so based on what comes in the battle force & the rest can you guys help me out with my 1st list?

I will also purchase these next, but want to try & focus on what I have on-hand:

x1 Land Speeder

x1 Drop Pod

x1 Razorback

x1 Wolf Pack box

will I have enough troops or should I get another Wolf Pack box?

& as far as HQ goes I havnt decided what to get.

thanks guys for your help.

I was thinking to get that @ 1st but the SM one offers more for the money & I want my army to look different so with all the extras from the Wolfs Pack sprue I can dress them up + with an Assault Squad & Rhino included it was the better buy overall.

depends on how "wolfy-looking" you want your Space Wolves to be.

With the current ratio they wont look very "wolfy".

I would certainly think about buying the SW battle force.

It contains 2 Space Wolves boxes, one DP and 5 scouts, if you add up the price you get the DP for free.

Since you already have a DP and one SW box on your to buy list I think it would be a good deal.

I'm sure the opinions vary, but I think sniper rifles are wasted on wolf scouts. BEL with the right equipment works so much better

and you can use your Long Fangs to get rid of MC.

Whether you have enough troops, well, it depends on how large a force you want. If you just want a 1500 or 2000 points army you should

start making army lists and focus on buying the things you need.

If you are like me (and many other players) and want to have >5k points worth of miniatures from which you choose your list you are more free in

what to buy.

What you certainly will need in my opinion is 3-4 grey hunter packs with 2 special weapons each (I would say at least 2 packs with 2 melta and 1 with plasma), preferrably in rhinos

and at least one long fang pack with 5 missile launchers, preferably in a razorback

The dreadnought and the drop pod go well together. but beware, if you drop your dreadnought unsupported into the enemy lines he wont survive long.

Edit:

oh, and where did you buy your thunderwolves from? Mythicast?

If your chapter is called the While Lions, you should be thinking about converting the white lions that come with the High Elves Chariot. Since there are horses and lions in the box, i'm sure you could buy them off of somebody not needing the lions.

your currently sitting on 35 models in Power armor, 10 models in carpace armor (scouts) depending on what scale your army building to, you may have all the troop models you need. Seems the rule of thumb is a full Troop unit for every 500 points.

if that's the case, and your aiming for 1500 points, your all ready set.

i would order from GW mail order the $9.90 SW upgrade frame, get 2 of them.

after that i would think about your focus, that is, what is it you want to do with you marines.. personally instead of dapping in fast attack and transport, i would make a choice of one or the other, and get 3 of the unit of your choice, x3 land speeders...x3 drop pods.. x3 razor backs ( that would give you x4 rhinos, not a bad start to a solid mech army.)

personally sit on your hands and save your dollars. Model, and paint all that you have currently, and start cutting your teeth at 1000 points. play that for 2-3 months and see how you feel then. IMHO

The Devs may only have 1 Launcher a piece per box, but he does get one more from the SM battle box. The Dev's give him extras that he can use when the weather shifts eventually. (Always be prepared)

The SM battle force is okay. Tac squad is not bad, nor, the scouts, neither is the Rhino. The Assualt squad is kind of a miss. Skyclaws are hit or miss overall. Most players don't run them outside fun army lists. Also, the 5 man attack squad isn't that hot if I remember correctly.

The SW battle force is much better. While you don't get the troop diversity, you do get 20 PA troops and scouts. You also get a ton of extras for "wolfing out" other models. No rhino is a let down, especially in light of the drop pod replacing it. If pricing is remembered correctly, you either get the scouts or the drop pod for free essentially.

The main trick is what level games you want to be playing in. Grey Hunters are far and above the BEST troop we can put on the table for ability and points. Many people run 8-10 in a unit. That translates to 30-50 models depending on the army size and composition you want.

For HQ's off the start... Rune Priests. The $13 model is not shabby, but with the SW Pack box you can easily bash together a decent one or two.

For future purchases: Razorbacks. Use em as rhino's when you need them, spam them as razorbacks when you need that. Just solid purchases.

Well, Skyclaws are not so bad actually and they are not very fun against oponent if used correctly. But You are correct - five of them is not enough, but the OP still gets 5 sets of running legs for GH conversions and extra bits for variety.

So true! The same goes about Whirlwinds and other Rhino-chassis vehicles.

Simple Basic Grey Hunter Tactics

Put a Wolf Guard with them with a Close Combat load out [Paired Wolf Claws, Thunder Hammer, Power Fist, Frost Blade ect].

Maybe a Wolf Priest

Other Good Weapon for the Characters: Combi-Plasma, Storm Bolters

Get 4 things

-Plasma Guns/Pistol Pistol

-Power Weapon/Power Fist

-MotW

-Wolf Standard

On your turn wait until your Assault Phase the turn Before he is going to Assault and Activate your Wolf Standard.

He now has 2 Choices

1] Charge into you, if you succeed in your Counter Attack Roll is will still be as if you Assaulted him, You will go 1st and Re-Roll any “Ones”, this includes To Hit Rolls, Damage Rolls, the number of Attacks on your MotW, Armor Saves and Sweeping Advance Rolls.

2] Wait one turn for the Standard to wear off and that gives you one more turn of Plasma fire

I think that those Devastator boxes may have been bit poor choice as there isn't many (if any) missile launchers.

what do you suggest I get in its place? all the items are still in shrink wrap except for the BF which Im gonna keep.

should I trade in the sniper scouts in for another unit of regular scouts or is 5 refular scouts good enough & just get something else with the sniper box, it does give me an extra missle launcher too at that.

help me out guys :o

I plan on 1,500-2,500 pts at most for now. & for the price of x2 upgrade kits I can buy x1 wolfpack from my venue & it comes with a set of legs too.

.

You can hunt those missile launchers on various bits sites. I've been lucky enough to get ~ 5 missile launchers this way. As for scouits, You can start with a small pack of 5 (meltagun is mandatory there) + Wolf guard for the beginning to see whether You like them as anti-tank or close-combat. I found out that for me 5 are not enough and now I am running 10 of them with Wolf guard. But 5 is good for beginning.

Upgrade kits are useful, for they have meltagun, the old single-handed poweraxe and neat textured wolfskull shoulderpad. Alternatively, You can raid meltaguns on bits sites - they are less often and missile launchers, but sometimes You get lucky. There is also a pack of 5 melta guns on GW online store - I'd suggest You picking one of them.

There isn't any point in collecting meltaguns from that upgrade kit as those have only 1 melta each and you do need more than as you do want to have combi melta for WG.

see thats another thing that prevented me from trying out 40k (Ive been playing fantasy for over a decade) was the dam guns! I cant tell them apart for !@#$% is it that important to have the "actual" guns on the minis, its not suffice to build them as they come & just tell the opponent what euiptment the have based on your list instead of wysiwyg?

on that note, is there a thread breaking down the types of guns & what they look like (I havnt a clue) so I can at least learn what they are.

Well, these are better if You need pure meltas, but I still recommend at least one SW accessories frame since You get some extras in addition to meltagun, and this meltagun is plastic which makes it easier for combi-melta conversions. For purpose of collecting meltas, accessories frame is indeed too expensive,

When I switched from fantasy that was difficult too, but You soon get to learn things. That's not that difficult. If You have any SM codex - the vanilla or SW or any else, there is section inside with pictures representing them all. The most important thing is to distinguish their types and know their rules - rapid-fire, assault, heavy.

I think that those metal Melta Guns work just fine for the conversion. you just file that rail on top down and glue suitably cut down half of a Bolter or Bolt Pistol on top of it.

After a closer look I think I will take your advice & get 2 of em, plus a set of each shoulderpad sprue as well.

Nice figure of speach.. I will ,ake these my final purchase & see how it goes from there.

just one more question though, are 5 Terminators enough or do I need more?

It seems you had a little cash to throw around.

2x Space Marine Battle Force

2x Space Wolf Packs

From that you could build:

Combine the two SM tactical with the two SW packs and you get 40 Grey Hunters.

From the SW pack sprues, you would be able to make a 10 man Wolf Scouts pack.

From both SM Battle Forces and Space Wolf sprues, you can make 10 man Sky Claw pack.

From both Combat squads and Space Wolf sprues, you can make your HQ/Wolf Guard in power armor.

From the SM Battle Force tacticals, you get additional special weapons and you get to start collecting missile launchers for your future Long Fangs.

You have two Rhinos.

I could build this army with those purchases:

HQ:

Wolf Lord in Power Armor

Rune Priest in Power Armor

Wolf Priest in Power Armor

Elites:

Wolf Guard x5 in Power Armor

Wolf Scouts x10

Troops:

Grey Hunters x10, meltagun x2, rhino

Grey Hunters x10, meltagun x2, rhino

Grey Hunters x10, plasmagun x2

Grey Hunters x10, plasmagun x2

Fast:

Sky Claws x10

With your bits leftover, you would be on your way to a Long Fangs squad with bodies and 2x missile launchers. One devastator box buy and you would then be able to field,

Heavy:

Long Fangs x6, missile launcher x3, lascannon x2

What you can do is one of two things.

1] Paint the one with the Special Weapon Diferent [The Pack has all Red Sholeder Pads, the guy with the Plasma Gun has Gree]

2] Have all of the normal Bolt Guns ponits forward or held in only one hand and the Plasma Guns in two.

It seems you had a little cash to throw around.

2x Space Marine Battle Force

2x Space Wolf Packs

;) I wish!..lol

you misread my post, I only have:

x1 SM Battle Force box

x1 SM Commander box

x1 Scout Snipers box

x1 SW Terminator box

x2 Devistator squad box

x1 AoBR Dreadnought

x5 Thunderwolves

x1 Land Speeder

x1 Drop Pod

x1 Razorback

x1 Wolf Pack box

I was refering to buying x2 of the SW Accessorie Sprue not Battle Force Set...lol

should I keep my Sniper Scouts or trade them back & get another 5 regular Scouts? they do give me another rocket launcher for a total of 4 ( x1 SM BF, x2 Devistator Squads, x1 Snipers) how many more Missle Launchers should I get?
