Newtype
Good day everyone. This project has been a slow work in progress. Inspired by all the scratch built Gunships and Titans, I thought I would try scratch building my own Thunder Hawk Gunship but different. So I took the Republic Gunship from Star Wars: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/3534643634633638.jpg A Marine Thunderhawk Gunship: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/2edd550307a0c66bce970f0989a7b463_5914.jpg And smashed them head first into each other to get this result: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWorkingSketch.jpg So now I have worked out the interior space needed to fit a Rhino and have also worked out how to fit all the guns onto this heretical concept. So first we have the cargo bay: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipMashupWIP6.jpg With Rhino: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipMashupWIP7.jpg Folded up to see just how much room there is: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipMashupWIP9.jpg Not a lot! The hull boxed in: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipMashupWIP4.jpg And a side view with brother Drexal standing on top: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipMashupWIP5.jpg The Hvy. Bolters will be mounted two on the nose and one on each wing tip like the GW Thunderhawk. The Las Canons are going to be mounted up behind the cockpit. Now with the the main gun, I thought about building them like the Rebublic Gunship, but desided it would take too much explanation if I ever take this ship to a game. So I am looking at mounting a shorter version of the main gun on the front of the ship. Think of the Interceptor from the old British TV show UFO. Something else that got me thinking was that by putting the cargo door at the back instead of the front, I could see the Rhino being shoved out the back of the Gunship while screaming in at tree top level. This would be a lot more dramatic than just landing and driving out the front. As I build up more components, I'll post them as well. For now though, wish me luck. malika666
Isnt the craft a bit small to be a Thunderhawk? A smaller lander ship might be more fitting? Stormhawk perhaps? Newtype
Yes it's physically smaller than the Forge World Thunderhawk. But I didn't want to build a GW pattern ship. This is my take on the marine gunship using 'other' technology. In the back story, my marine chapter uncovered Demiurg knowledge and are pushed to use it in the maintainance of their ships, weapons, and armour. Yes it's heretical and blasphemous and all those other names but I've never been one to follow the 'fluff' too closely. I've got the wings blocked out and have given some thought to actually adding some engine lights. I'll see what I can get done on the weekend. All for now. Zeller
Where in the wide world of sports did you manage to find a LAAT/i gunship!? How big is it compared to a marine? How much? :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/210692-thunder-hawk-gunship-scratch-built-mashup/#findComment-2509022 Share on other sites
Newtype
Ok a little progress made. The Republic gunship image came from the web. I think it might be the Revel Snap kit, but I might be wrong. As for scale? I don't think its big enough for 40K. Now I have the wings blocked out and added detail to the top and rear of the ship. Top view: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipMashupWIP12.jpg Rear view: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipMashupWIP11.jpg Will work on scribing the armour lines on the wings and getting the cargo bay ready for paint. More to slowly come Newtype Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/210692-thunder-hawk-gunship-scratch-built-mashup/#findComment-2512111 Share on other sites
Newtype
And there was light!! I tried out two bright blue leds in the engines and they look great! :D A shot of the leds on for testing: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP16.jpg And a picture in less light: Engines to full!! http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP18.jpg Also got the rear ramp and wings ready for primer: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP13.jpg And started adding the armour plates to the bottom of the ship. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP17.jpg All for now, Newtype. Warsmith Aznable
Very, very cool Newtype! Are you using regular foam-core board for the thicker parts? I've used thinner plasticard to add things to existing models, but I've never scratch-built something, and was recently staring at supplies in the hobby store wondering what would be best. Newtype
Good day all. Eveything you see Max is sheet plastic. There is a place in Toronto that sells plastic sheet and structural extrusions commercially. I can buy polystyrene in 4'x8' sheets and it will last me years. I used 0.040" and 0.060" thick styrene to block out the hull and wings. The bottom armour plates are 0.060" thick pieces as well. Look through your local Yellow Pages to see if there are any shops dealing in plastic supplies. Also look for 'Evergreen' sheet styrene prducts. I use all sorts of their bar, rod, and tube stock. And you are right KhornateKiller, from the top it does look like the Lamda Class Shuttle. May be I should add a huge vertical fin on top. ^_^ Any way, more to come as it's built. Newtype
Good day all. I have been able to do a little more on the gunship. I've built the main cannon and have figured out how to mount all the weapons onto the nose of the thing. Here is a front and partial side view of the nose. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP21.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP20.jpg I've also added the lift engines and more detail to the bottom. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP22.jpg I am hoping for some more time on the weekend. Myxx
Very cool. I definately agree with the rear hatch and high speed deployment. Much like the ramp and chute system in current military use (think XXX and Vin Diesel getting yanked out the back off a C-130). It screams SM "shock-and-awe" to me. Congrats! Newtype
Good day and Happy Thanksgiving. At least here in Canada. Anyway the paint is out and I have the cargo bay finished and ready to assemble. After that is done and things touched up, I can start working on installing the bay assembly into the main hull and then close it up. Here is a picture of the bay unassembled: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP23.jpg And the bay assembled: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP24.jpg Closeup of the forward bulkhead: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP26.jpg And the right sidewall: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP25.jpg All for now. Newtype
At last I have a responce for you Captain Mick -_- Good day everyone. After putting all the work into the cargo bay, I decided to add a cockpit and flight crew as well. At first I was going to just build a blank cockpit and paint the windscreen to look like reflective armoured glass. But I thought I could get a Landspeeder cockpit to work as the flight deck of my 'Thunderhawk varient. So after cutting here and glueing there, I have a cockpit in working order. As you can see by these pictures: Front view: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP30.jpg Front side view: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP27.jpg And over the shoulder view: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP31.jpg These last two shots show how the windscreen is going to sit around the cockpit and form the upper spine as well. Right View: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP28.jpg Left View: http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n212/Donnewtype/Warhammer%2040K%20Stuff/Marine%20Gunship%20Mashup/GunshipWIP29.jpg Once all this is done, I am going to have to cut out the sections that will act as access for the battery and switch. In order to keep these in place, I will have to add some small magnets as mounts. But that's for later. All for now until the next post.
