Frontline989
How often do you run a Wolf Lord without TDA? How effective have they been? What upgrades do you normally give them? Im wondering if a PA Wolf Lord is the norm or are TDA Lords the only way to fly? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/210694-wolf-lords/ Share on other sites
Anpu42
I run Wolf Lords in all three Armor Types. Power Armor: If you want to keep them cheep this is a good start, I usually run PA when giving them a Thunder Wolf, Bike or Jump Pack. If are planning on taking a Storm Shield this is another way of keeping the cost down, most of the time you are a bullet magnet for big guns so a 2+ save does you little good. Be sure to take Saga of the Bear though. Runic Armor: I like this choice also. This is a good choice if you are fighting Hordes or planning on riding in transports and taking a Belt of Russ or Storm Shield, it will give you the same protection as Terminator Armor and you can still make Sweeping Advances. Terminator Armor: Gives you a free Power Sword and Storm Bolter, but I like to use a Frost Blade. All of them work well it just depends on how much you want to spend. captain fabian
I believe the only use for a wolf lord is on a Thunderwolf. Any other choice is not worth his points and equipment cost. If he rides in a transport with GH or terminators- so in PA or TDA- he loses 2 rounds moving. Not to mention that his unit will be killed and he will be on his own. On the other hand a Thunderlord can threaten your oponent all the time. Even if he does not charge in turn 2 he can still annoy your oponent and make him focus on him. His best ability is his fast redeployment. SO he can jump easily from combat to combat. Giving him another 15 fen wolf wounds is not bad either. So because you are going to recieve A LOT of shooting with this guy give him RA and then whatever else you want him to do. If you want a something killy use a Wolf priest with another unit. It always works and it's better than your Lord and more survivable. littlbitz
My Wolf Lord has two armor types, and the model I use strictly depends upon my mood and the points level of the game. 1. Thorgrimm on a bike with his Thunderhammer and Stormshield with Runic armor and of course Saga of the bear 2. Thorgrimm occasionally dons his suit of TDA and carries his Frost Blade and Combi-plasma, SotB here as well. I've said this before, but it bears repeating on occasion. The beauty of this new Codex is its versatility and how easy it is to individualize our armies. No 2 Wolf lords need look, or be equipped alike to be effective. So, I would say the Wolf Lord should be equipped in a manner that best compliments your play style and the Combat Doctrine of your Great Company. Anpu42
I have noticed that a lot of time I will use a Wolf Guard Battle Leader were I could put a Wolf Lord. When I need a Terminator I just take Logan When I need a Power Armored Space Wolf, I take a Wolf Priest or Ragnar. It us usually worth the extra points in the long run. Stormbrow II
I believe the only use for a wolf lord is on a Thunderwolf. I wouldn't go that far but I agree with the sentiment. The Wolf Lord on TW is a staple of my lists as the extra 10 points compared to a bike is well worth it for the +1 A and +1 S (I use Saga of the Bear so extra T is moot). No 2 Wolf lords need look, or be equipped alike to be effective. They aren't allowed to be anyway. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/210694-wolf-lords/#findComment-2508629 Share on other sites
Grimtooth
My staple wolf lord is on a TWM. Any variant that I would run would at the minimum be equipped with a storm shield. I give up the extra attack any day for the 3+ inv. From there, in no particular order, it is thunder hammer, frost blade, and wolf claw. I also almost make it a requirement that my wolf lord is in runic armor now as well. Your Lord just needs to support your list, and there are tons of ways to do that. As long as he works for you, then you have configured him "right". For me, the only Wolf Lord I ever run is Ragnar, as I've been playing his Great Company for a long, long time. Luckily for me, he provides my GC with exactly what I want and what I need. If I want to try something different Ragnar will designate his Battle Leader, Alarik the Grim, as the force commander. Alarik is in TDA with Thunderhammer and Storm Shield (a model I've had for about 16 years), so he works in a much different way than Ragnar. Build what will compliment your army. Rune_Priest_Rhapsody
I have two lords without TDA: Finnvid Gundersenn wears Runic Armour, Belt of Russ, two wolf buddies, Plasma pistol, and a Frostblade. Skorri Bloodpelt wears Power Armor, two wolf buddies, Saga of the Bear, and uses the Wolf Claw/Storm Shield package. Both have worked out just fine in the few games they have each been included in. I would like to put them both onto Thunderwolves, which is why I am purchasing the Khorne Juggernaut three pack today. -R_P_R Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/210694-wolf-lords/#findComment-2508809 Share on other sites
Freman Bloodglaive
My preferred means of transport is jump pack, but that's more down to the fact that now we have the option. I play smaller games (1000 points) so I can't fit in a Wolf Lord (and have played one game with one) but if I do I have the option of frost blade or twin power fists (yes I know it's inefficient) and if I can spare the points I give him the saga of the bear. With Mythicast's new Lord War Wolf model available I'm seriously considering buying one. With frostblade, storm shield and thunderwolf mount he'd only be 200 points. For his killing power and mobility that's cheap. WS6, A5, S6, 3+ invulnerable? He's almost in Mephiston territory. Throw on runic armour, wolf tooth necklace and saga of the bear he'd be 265 points, and he'd stomp Mephiston into the ground and probably kerb stomp Dante even if he was cursed (which he would be).
