Getting into Wolves

A friend of a friend is leaving the hobby for personal reasons (babies), and is selling off forces he's collected over 15 years. Some buddies and I are graciously taking on his burden, both for our benefit and to have forces he can still play with when he wants. Among his collection is a decent number of Wolves, so I spoke up and grabbed them. I've been considering Wolves as a second force for some time.

Here's what I'm getting, along with his codex:

Njal Stormcaller

Lukas the Trickster

16 Space Wolves

Bolters

1 Space Wolf

Sword

Bolt Pistol

2 Space Wolves

Melta guns

2 Space Wolves

Plasma guns

Enough to make 9-10 more Space Wolves

5 bits to make scouts

Lots of bits to convert stuff

I already have a Tactical squad I can convert, but what else should I consider for this force.

Transport vehicles... I'm guessing... but I would make a list to the points value you normally play and work from there. No point in telling you to get grey hunters and rhinos if you want to play Logan wing?

Yeah, but he has not TDA Wolf guards for now and most probably with what he has, he will be playing mechanised/footslogging/podding army. Anyways, the rule of thumb is one troops choice per 500 points, and it appears You now only have two packs of Grey hunters. And You can put Lukas aside for a while, for then You need some blood claws with him, but GH option for troops now is better. Also in small games he's a bit overpriced for what he does.

I would probably run at least two or three packs of Grey Hunters. Blood Claws are too limited in my opinon for space wolves right now. Too expensive to make them effective. Give the first two packs of Grey Hunters 2 Meltas for tank busting. Plasma is cool though.

Main 2/3 packs of long fangs, their ranged firepower is valued greatly in any footslogging force. Keeping Njal in there will probably keep him pretty safe to really build up his abilities and with termi armour allows him to take hits for the team.

Thunderwolf are great at threatening units and keeping a high level of mobilty in a foot force. Skyclaws could be worth considering otherwise, but like Blood claws they are only really effective against infantry.

That being said, some termi or power armour Wolf Guard with Power Fist and Combi Melta would be pretty sturdy. Giving them a power fist allows them to make full use of that power fist for slightly cheaper then your average gray hunter and they are pretty hard to single out. Allowing them to act as a third special weapon once and really pull his weight in close combat.
