'Bulldog' Variant Assault Ram

BulldogUK

Recommended Posts

Personally thought 90 quid was a little steep for the FW model so decided to knock one together for myself

This is the Bulldog variant, slightly larger than the Caestus and able to transport 10 Marines AND their sandwiches!

Will try and slap a little paint on it in the next few weeks, no time next week but will update when done, probably aim for something nuetral like the one on the FW website so I can use it for the Crimson's as well as the GK

Apols for the dark pics, detail will show better once I add some colour!

this is definately a Forge World Assult Ram. hate to break it to you guys.

BulldogUK is an amazing modeller. If he says he scratch-built then by god he scratch-built it. Look at some of his other stuff on B & C. The guy is truly talented.

I suggest you do some research before making statements such as this - comparing pics side-by-side would be a good place to start.

Looks superlative Bulldog - any chance of a parts list or perhaps an instruction sheet

Im pretty sure this guy was joking.... If not then he is pretty fail as there are obvious differences.

Great stuff. When I saw the FW model it was one of the few recent models that I was like, "Really? Im pretty sure that could be done at home." Great to see you proving me right and even better than I thought it could be done. Awesome!

Looks fantastic. I second the request for a parts list/construction guide .

My favourite touch though; the deployed airbrakes above the engines. That's a nice realistic touch that makes it look like it's actually on final appoach for a breach...

Very nice model - thopugh the muzzle flash on the bolters is all wrong (should be white in the middle, red, black at the edges!!)

But stirling stuff, can't wait to see this in colour...

Is it just me, or are those Terminators (or whatever their equivalent is for Space Wolves) surfing out of the back? YES! We need more marines on boards doing stuff like this!

EDIT: Actually, there just the Space Hulk models, right? Still awesome.

Otherwise, well done. Very professional.

Sorry about the late reply chaps, just got back from a week in not so sunny North Yorkshire!

The ram is what I would describe as a Lego (tm?) build

I was and still am lucky enough to own one of the original metal thunderhawks (yes it's HEAVY!)

As a prolific scratch-builder I always tend to make little latex molds of anything I think would come in handy for future builds, in the case of the TH it was most of it!

As I tend not to sell any of my scratch-built models and don't build to order these are strictly for personal use mind you so I feel I ain't steeping on any one's IP toes <_<

The parts used on this particular build are the wings, ramjets and flat panels, few extra plastic spares from the bits box and the rest of the build and armour overlays are made with nice thick card (mounting board)

Saying that, it would be pretty simple to build it all from card it would just take a little longer to add all the inlays and detail which is often the reason I choose to use some precast parts as I am an impatient so and so!

Another reason I like to use the precasts is it creates an overall similar look to my builds and keeps them looking uniform and marine like (check them out on the website)

Sorry I don't have any plans for the build as I never build from drawings and always tend to just make things up as I go along, I enjoy doing it this way as it gets the creative juices flowing, even Odin the mighty Warlord Titan was made on the hoof, to this day I am amazed he hasn't collapsed yet!!! <touches wood and crosses fingers)

Once the ram is painted it should be easier to identify the shapes of the individual components and overlays so should aid those who want to copy, need a few days to slip back into the humdrum of reality then I will crack on with the painting!

  • 2 weeks later...

Right, paints on, another project ticked off the bucket list!

Couldn't decide on a colour scheme to begin with then realised that the FW one was bang on for my Crimsons, so it was...

Although I made a quick flying stand for tabletop 40k the way I always envisioned this thing is smashing through the bulkhead of a vast space hulk disgorging it's marines into a horde of stealers bolters blazing, to this end I knocked up a little wall thing from bits of plastic card, etc

Nothing major but it adds a little eye candy to my hulk games and I figured it might be cool to use it in custom games with reinforcement rules of some description, something simple to keep with the fast pace of SH, maybe a single roll each turn to see when the squad appears, pick a floor section and roll a d6. 1-2 smashes into the hulk left of target, 3-4 hits the section bang on, 5-6 smashes into the hulk right of target, everthing on the floor piece killed, splattered into a million peices and sucked out into deep space!

Anyhow, here a a few picks 'on the board'

i think the bulldog Variant, looks BETTER than the FW model.. i really hated and still do hate the angle that the two top fins are, on the FW, and you've seem to nailed it on apperance and function. but i felt the same way about the old scratch build Land raiders, that were every where, during the 3rd edition, before GW/FW got off their buttocks and pooped something out for the masses. Let me join the Chorus and Sing "GREAT WORK, Sublime, SiR"

edit:but.. i do have to note, that I guess the Ultra marine coffers are running low.. so that would be why the have been renting out to the Wolves,Angels and the sallies or are those subjugator marines?
