BoR's Dark Angels

Bringer of Redemption

Recommended Posts

This is something I've been meaning to do for a while: show off some of my models. Sadly, the photo quality is far from perfect.

My Army:

Broken into subsections for a better look:

Deathwing:

In two choices of camo:

Company Champion that acts as a company master stand in (looks better than the AoBR model I have):

Terminator Libby:

I'll have to say your army is looking pretty good.

As far as the pics, you might want to examine the macro setting on your camera (allows close up pics), a tripod, diffused lighting (no flash), and a smoother background. I use a light blue pillowcase, or sheet.

The picture taking becomes just as important as the painting when it comes to presenting your work. On the down side it'll also show all the bofors on the model. I take such pictures prior to posting just so I can see my mistakes and touch them up.

Im sure you have a solid foundation and your skills will only get better as you continue.

BTW: Whats the point cost for you army as presented?

This army is looking good my man. Some key pointers I'd make for improvements is:

1) Do some shading - at the moment they look like they haven't really had any washes or layering for added depth.

2) Slow down a little with painting lines. Some jagged contours look a little messy. Particularity on Belial.

3) Do something with the bases to make them feel more complete.

Thats just what Id do but great stuff either way.

BTW: Whats the point cost for you army as presented?

Lets see... 2895, give or take a little for proxying.

And as for the bases, well... it's on my to do list. I'm both lazy and a high school senior, so when that actually happens could be any time in the next couple of months. I'll probably do the same thing I did for Belial--cut up some sprues and paint them boltgun with a drybrush of blazing orange to serve as rust.

Maybe a few Ravenwing elements to round it off?

I'd been planning on adding to the Deathwing before I move on to the RW. As of now, all I have from the second company is a speeder--it should be in one of the pictures.

Reviving an old thread for this year's LPC.

I just registered for the contest today, but I didn't have much to do, so I ended up spending most of the afternoon building and painting.

My vow was for 6 Ravenwing Bikes, 1 Ravenwing Attack Bike, and Sammy on a Speeder. (I got the Ravenwing battleforce for Christmas).

Here goes:

6 Bikes, all built and primed, with an attack bike at the edge that got cut off.

gallery_47252_4509_4768148.jpg

More focus on the one bike I put a base coat on, then added white. Some of what's in white (saddlebags) will be painted over in a different color that doesn't show well on black, and what's supposed to be white will get at least one more coat before it's finished.

gallery_47252_4509_189050.jpg

gallery_47252_4509_5383085.jpg

And then, what I spent most of my time working on: Sammy. He's not quite finished, but he's close. Most of what's left is in the fine details (eyes ect.)

gallery_47252_4509_3985588.jpg

For those wondering, I decided to use the red stripes on the white field that adorn his shoulder pad on the 'eavy Metal models in the codex as a basis for his personal heraldry, but I didn't like the "candy cane" look that gave it, so I limited it to one stripe in a darker color.

Also, the speeder has what is probably some of my best detail work yet:

gallery_47252_4509_2643453.jpg

Finally, and this is completely unrelated to my LPC, but this keeps happening to my old metal VenDread:

gallery_47252_4509_6419041.jpg

Does anybody have any recommendations for this? As far as I can tell, the problem comes from the model being extremely top heavy.

Oh, and I know he won't see it here, but I wanted to thank my dad for letting me mess around with his nice camera. It's why the pictures are so much nicer than the older ones in this thread.

You are making some good progress here.

The dread looks like it needs to be pinned. You might need to fill underneath the base with putty (something like Milliput if you have any) then pin as far up into the legs as you can and through the ankles into the putty underneath the base.

Hope that makes sense.

WIP #2 for the LPC

Master of the Ravenwing (speeder) and the first bike have been completed:

gallery_47252_4509_1939459.jpg

gallery_47252_4509_4167664.jpg

... Just realized as I was posting that I forgot to paint a purity seal on the bike, and a squad number on the biker. Oh well.

Now that I know how I want to paint them, I can turn the rest of the bikes out in a production line style, which should be faster.

Well, at long last, I'm done with the LPC. Here are the photos of the finished biker squad:

A quick look at the sergeant, which I accidentally gave a librarian's shoulder pad since I wasn't paying attention.

Bringer of Redemption indeed! Congratulations on completing the vow. The army looks very striking, and I am impressed you did the Dw symbols by freehand.

.. and good to see you back in here Amalric.. ;)

SG

Very nice work. Congrats on your vow.

It's a shame that's happening to your dread. Pinning might be your best option like amalric already said. You might want to consider magnetizing it, but I'm not sure if they would hold given how low down on the legs they would be placed.

The dread is actually fixed. I didn't pin it (largely because I'm not sure how), but liberal application of two-part epoxy, which is all but unbreakable once it sets, did the trick. It's standing on the left hand side of the last photo.

--BoR

Pinning is actually easier on a larger model like your Dread and the parts you are hoping to fix here. But if you're a pinning virgin – take it from me that first drill hole will make you sweat a bit ;) .

But if the expoxy does the job then that's fine.

Nice Ravenwing by the way :P.

Cheers

I

I'm now starting work on my latest project: an assault terminator squad and a kitbashed Belial to go with it. No pictures yet, but I do have a question:

When people use the Dreadnought leg plates from the RW sprue to make terminator shoulder pads, do they cut off the two circles on the underside that would attach to the pegs on the dreadnought legs?

--BoR

Oh, and I might actually finish painting the buildings in the background of my army shot... might.

  • 2 weeks later...

More WIP shots of Belial, and some of a terminator Librarian I've had lying around for a while, but only just got around to highlighting.

gallery_47252_4509_1568241.jpg

gallery_47252_4509_4606654.jpg

The Librarian has a number of screwups with the paint job that I haven't fixed, since I think it's interesting to see an example of my first attempt at doing a highly detailed model.

The primary color is regal blue, rather than the lighter ultramarines blue, since I think the darker color fits in better with the image of the Dark Angels.

  • 2 weeks later...

Every time I get a new terminator squad, I'm reminded of just how long they take to paint.

Normally, I don't post unless I have an IC or a full squad, but since I keep changing how I paint Bone, I thought I'd show the latest model, along with the rest of his squad in various unfinished states. They aren't the greatest pics, but they'll do for now.

gallery_47252_4509_1462846.jpg

gallery_47252_4509_73634.jpg

Incidentally, now that I've actually worked with a lightning claws model, I have even more respect for those with the skills to actually paint lightning on the blade.

Finally, a shot showing how my terminator painting has evolved. Running from left to right:

The very first terminator squad I ever painted, from AoBR. I don't like to post pictures of these guys, given that they're pretty bad. The lighting makes it hard to tell, but all of the red is done in blood red, rather than the scab red I started using later.

The first Belial model I painted. Starting to transition away from the really bright colors of the original terminators

A terminator from the second squad I painted. More attention was given to the details, and a slightly darker set of secondary colors was used giving the whole model a darker look.

Belial #2. As featured in my previous post, I started to play around with washes. This one is badab black over bleached bone, with another layer of heavily watered down bleached bone on top and white highlights.

The newest terminator. Badab black over bleached bone with bleached bone highlights. Most of the details received a badab black wash as well. The green lightning claws are a callback to how I've painted other terminator squads with green powerfists to help tie them into the rest of the army.

(the differences are more clear if you look at the full sized version of the picture.)

gallery_47252_4509_599809.jpg

For all of these, the detail that has given me the most trouble consistently is the eyes. It's not too bad when they're not wearing helmets (except for the hooded head on Belial--Those are difficult eyes to paint), but even with the help of several tutorials, I just can't make red lenses look good.
